Four homeless people in Bristol have died in a week suspected of 'using Spice'

Volunteers say there has been a huge increase in the use of the synthetic drug

Four homeless people in Bristol city centre have died in the past week, the Bristol Post has been told.

Two people died after being taken to hospital, while another had been in a hostel. The last person died on the streets, in the Bearpit.

Bristol City Council confirmed the news, but could not say the cause of their death.

Volunteers and people working with rough sleepers in the city say there has been an increase in the use of synthetic drug Spice, and said the drug had been involved in the death of some of the homeless people.

There has yet to be any official confirmation, however.

Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing at the council, said: “For some people the housing crisis means they will have to wait a few more years to buy a home, or have to live further from the city centre than they want.

“For others it means living in a van because they can't afford a flat. Last week for four people it meant death.”

A spokesman for St Mungo's homelessness charity said: “We are saddened to hear of the recent deaths. We want everyone to have a place to call home.

"It is dangerous for people to sleep on the streets, dangerous to their physical and mental health, as well as being at risk of assault. Sadly, the average of death for a man who dies whilst homeless is 47. For a woman, it is just 43.

So four people died and there is no evidence whatsoever at this point that "Spice" had anything to do with it. But hey, let's put it in the title anyway! More clicks, right?
