I am interested in doing computer work from home. Part time, full time. I am nationally certified in customer service, I figure that should help. Does anyone have experience, or suggestions? Thanks for your time.

i've been working remotely for about 5 years.

long story short, i lived in boston for about 9 months in 2012. i was hired by a company in london looking to open a satellite office in cambridge, ma. while the office hunt was happening, i worked from home. very soon into my time with the company, my circumstances changed and my gf and i had to move back to california. i was obviously worried about telling my brand new company - i had been with them about a month only - but i made the case that it was better for the company and our customers for m to be on the west coast anyway. they agreed and i moved to california and continued to work remotely.

that was until about 2 weeks ago when i accepted an offer from another company. in this case, it's also a software company and everybody in the company works remotely.

there are now many resources dedicated to remote work e.g.

https://weworkremotely.com/
https://www.skipthedrive.com/
https://www.wfh.io/
http://jobs.supportdriven.com/ (not just remote jobs but many are)

i have a lot of thoughts on the challenges, culture, etc. or remote work so i am happy to answer any questions.

it seems like its so hard to work remotely, like to get motivated and do work at home. Something about being at an office just makes me work harder or more hours. I guess it works for some people though.

In my personal case, I would enjoy it for a time.

Who knows how fast I could progress.

Right now, I enjoy my free space. Lately it's been more people, more noise.

I am willing to give it a legitamite shot.

I am a lawyer (no longer practicing, disabled) and I spent the majority of my career working at the firm/office. I later started corporate law and I could work at home.

I enjoyed working from home. I went into the office a few times a month for meetings, but 90% was at home.

It was much less stressful and I didn't have to deal with "office politics." The office would FedEx me docs/files and E-mail - a few phone conferences.

I think it worked well for me because I'm introverted and my work required a lot of concentration. My home environment was conducive to that.

I was solely responsible for keeping track of deadlines, etc. They just wanted the legal work done - so I had to structure a work routine. I didn't deviate from that routine unless there was a special circumstance.

I went to a book reading at at a bookstore, years ago, where my favorite author was there for book signing and discussion. He got up every morning and showered, shaved...dressed like he was going to work. He said it helped his writing.

I know that closer to the Christmas season big companies hire remote workers to do customer service work over the phone and online. I know Amazon does it and Disney was just advertising for it but only a few states are eligible.

I have worked at home or while travelling for a good portion of my life. I mainly do computer work (graphic design, web design, programming, etc) and have been a freight train hopper for a long while. I could always carry a laptop with me during the summer and work part-time, while in the winter I would get a place and work a little more. If you're good with discipline I highly recommend it!

alasdair posted some great links. Definitely worth checking out!!
