How America Went Haywire

Awake at 5 am I made coffee, toast,
settled back in bed to read the Atlantic article I had fallen asleep over the night before.
The article was titled, How America Went Haywire”, a historical chronicle of our mass detachment from reality and fact.
By the end of the article I felt drowsy again and snuggled under the covers, let the magazine fall,
pulled a pillow over my head to shut out both
the reading light and the new day that had blossomed into the sky while I was reading.
As I was curled in my little bubble of dark under the covers,
recycling my own oxygen,
arguing with certain tenets of the article in my head,
sleep, like a sedative, again overtook me and a dream
suddenly descended in my semiconscious vision in the form of huge, falling cardboard blocks
that fit together perfectly,
crowding out thought.
Then suddenly I was in a car that seemed to be driving itself
and the word that I uttered aloud was,
“Collision!”, which woke me right up,
laughing.
