There's a rumour going around
That every seven years
Every cell in your body regenerates
I'm pretty sure that's a lie
But
Part of me hopes that it's true
Regardless
This heavy-hipped woman
Is not someone that you know
Your head has never rested
On the vast, soft pillow
Of her stomach

Sometimes
When the planets align the right way
I sneak silently through the poetry we wrote back then
The evidence of a love that bordered on obsession
An acid tongued cynic
Coupled with a Jekyll and Hyde dreamer
I just find myself wondering
Who is that starry eyed girl
Wearing her heart on her sleeve

It must be nearly a decade now
Since we touched skin to skin
Mere strangers
That can't even look each other in the eye

I know that I loved you
More than you loved me
But I don't mind that at all
The power of love
That reckless abandon
Is a gift wasted on the young
The badness between us
It's made me fearless
When it used to leave me
Drained and powerless

A chuckle travels down to my soul
Covert trips through the poetry books we wrote each other
Both of us unknowingly commemorating those days
Committing them for future unknown readers
Without a care for what the future might bring
I don't really regret that
If I'm honest
It taught me every love is different
Life hardens us all
Because the one thing you said to me
That I always tried to remember
Was to stay soft
I didn't manage it
So that all encompassing, reckless love
Amorous sickness
That's the love I had for you
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
I thought it'd be the death of me

It's sad though
How love can become a sickness
When the spotlight starts to burn
Instead of just making things clearer
How people who loved each other
Can fuck each other up
Hurt people hurt people
And all the beautiful words they wrote
Instead of being love stories entwined
Become sepia toned
Words frittered away on people
The feelings crumbled like dry leaves
Blown away long ago
Yet still I survived it
Against all the odds
I'm happy now

I hope you are too.
