Sad news today, that one of the New York originators of punk rock, and radical NYC hippie street music, David Peel has died after a heart attack last week.

His unexpectedly high selling first record Have a Marijuana was released in 1968 on Electra records, and sung the praises of weed, mixing elements of folk rock, raggae and radical anarchist street politics.

In 1970, John Lennon produced the album The Pope Smokes Dope, which was released on the Beatles' Apple Records label (and was subsequently banned - and not even released - in many countries).

A subversive trailblazer, David Peel was active in the New York punk rock scene for the rest of his life.

Have a marijuana!
