Her sleeveless summer dress flutters blithely down the basement stairs
Defies the miles of cold just one thin wall away
"I'm coming down with you to get a stepstool, Daddy."
"Oh, that'll get you nice and high,"
Is my unrefined reply
Oh that she may never see
The images this phrase brings back for me
"Do you know how to fold it, to make it easier to carry, hun?"
"Of course I do, daddy."
She prances smugly for a moment
Before deftly crushing flat the hard black plastic with a snap
And wielding it like an unworthy opponent
Oh that she may never know
The tangled wire web I have wrung my fingers raw
To rise above to see her climb and grow
Defies the miles of cold just one thin wall away
"I'm coming down with you to get a stepstool, Daddy."
