Hi! I’m Maddy and I’m a research assistant at Monash University and the Burnet Institute in Melbourne. We are currently working on a project called ‘VicMeth’ and are seeking participants in Melbourne, Bendigo, Latrobe and Shepparton (September 2016).
While there has been a lot of media coverage of increasing methamphetamine (ice and speed) use and related harms in Australia in recent times, particularly in regional and rural areas, there is a lack of data on what is actually happening in the community. We need data on long terms patterns of meth use, including what causes people to start and stop using over time; the sort of services that they use (e.g. GPs, ambulances, drug rehab) and what services they wish to access for help. Without this information, we can’t improve services and don’t know the best time to intervene and prevent people transitioning to more problematic use patterns.
In order to help us better understand what is happening in the community with meth use, the Burnet Institute is undertaking a study of 800 Victorians who currently use meth.
Participants in the study need to be aged 18 years or over, living in one of the study locations and regularly using methamphetamine (ice and/or speed). The study involves an hour long face-to-face interview which asks a range of questions about demographics, drug use, use of treatment and support services, general and mental health and experience of drug-related harms. Participants will be reimbursed $40 for interviews, and up to another $60 for recruiting others to the study.
The research project has been approved by the Alfred Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee (project #: 171/16).
