Sometimes depending on my mood I find it can be cathartic to immerse yourself and feel the raw emotion of a sad/melacholic song, so what are some of your favorites? Doesn't matter what genre it is as long as it gives you the sense of sadness/melancholy.

I'll go first...

Sparklehorse - It's a Wonderful Life

More like "It's a Wonderful Album".

/\ Wow talk about lo-fi lol. Honestly I don't even know what to make of that. I don't hate it tho.

It's a bit played out, but I gotta post this one...

Yeah, I didn't watch that specific video, and just realized the recording is a lot worse than the album version. So, in order to do it justice, here's the album version (much better quality): http://flowerface.bandcamp.com/track/september - probably gonna edit my OP and link this instead.

Also, despite the hype around the track, I never actually listened to Hello.

Also, I've really been digging this shit. It's really weird and abstract, but cultivates a sort of somber/melancholic atmosphere.

These are both from their first album

They have a lot more great stuff, if you like it check out their bandcamp page.

Found this song by researching the sample that is on Raekwon's The Table...

The sample...

Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes

About as sad as I like.

Beautiful.

And in a totally different style -

The best kind of melancholy is the one masquerading with a mask of happiness - true sadness is always bitter-sweet ;)

Joy Division, early Cocteau Twins, Radiohead, early Cure..a lot of stuff released on 4AD.. It's all melancholy and I love it.
