Dr.Grasing and the Kansas City Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center are conducting this study to test a medication for its effects on craving for cocaine.

You may be eligible to participate if you are:

  • Using Cocaine Regularly by Rapid Route (either Smoked or Injected);
  • Either a Veteran or Non-Veteran;
  • Not Interested in receiving Treatment for Cocaine Dependence;
  • Between 21 to 50 Years of Age;
  • Male or Female, and do not have Certain Psychiatric Conditions.

Study participants will stay overnight at the Medical Center and receive the medications lorcaserin (orally) and cocaine (intravenously). Lorcaserin is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to assist obese patients in reducing their body weight, and may modify craving for cocaine. Its potential side effects can include headache, low blood sugar, and upper respiratory infections. If you are seeking treatment, you should not participate in this study, and the investigators can refer you to organizations that offer treatment for cocaine addiction.

Completion of the entire protocol would require three outpatient visits and an overnight stay for four nights.
Subjects who qualify will be compensated for their travel expenses and participation time with compensation of approximately $600.

The study is approved by the Kansas City VA Medical Center Human Subjects Committee, and funded for two years by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. As of May 2016, it is actively recruiting.
