Colombia Makes 'Biggest Seizure of Drugs': 8 Tons of Cocaine Found

BOGOTA, Colombia — Police confiscated 8.8 tons of cocaine along the border with Panama, Colombia's government said on Sunday.

With an estimated value of $240 million, the haul was discovered in an underground hideaway on a banana plantation in the municipality of Turbo, officials said. Three people were arrested in the operation.

"The biggest seizure of drugs in history. A hit against criminals," Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said on Twitter.

Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas said the drugs belonged to the Clan Usuga crime gang. The United States has offered a $5 million reward for the capture of the gang's leader.

Colombia produces some 487 tons of cocaine annually, according to the United Nations. Colombian authorities seized 278 tons of the narcotic in 2015.

If this is not an indicator that there is a pretty large demand for cocaine worldwide, and under the rules of the world, supply will meet demand.

I gotta admire people that can sit on coke like that... I couldnt know there was a gram in the house without constantly thinking about it if i had 8 tons i wouldnt have to worry about the cartel because id be dead in a week or less cooking crack in a large cauldron because pyrex cups are just too ghetto and small.

In the mean time there isn't a crack down on alcohol and tobacco which obviously doesn't kill.

Customs officials allegedly involved in drug and tobacco smuggling

A network of Australian border security officials is allegedly working for organised criminals, including drug and tobacco smugglers, in the most serious corruption scandal to ever hit the nation's border agencies.
A Fairfax Media investigation has uncovered multiple cases of alleged corruption involving staff from the Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture, along with maritime industry employees with government clearances.

Police on Wednesday arrested a Department of Agriculture compliance assessment officer, Richard Vong, over alleged links to organised criminals, including a syndicate led by suspected Melbourne drug trafficker Jimmy Chhav. They also raided his house.

Mr Vong will face court on Thursday charged with trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence, knowingly dealing in the proceeds of crime, dealing in property reasonably suspected of being the proceeds of crime and theft of Commonwealth property. A female official has been charged with knowingly dealing in the proceeds of crime and dealing in property reasonably suspected of being the proceeds of crime.
The allegations come as the government makes a virtue of its strength on border security, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull claiming the opposition "lack the commitment to keep our borders secure".

However, the federal government and customs chiefs, including the nation's top border security official, Michael Pezzullo, have been repeatedly warned over four years in high-level confidential briefings about significant suspected corruption in the Border Force's ranks, especially in NSW.

Evidence, including NSW police briefing notes and testimony from crime figures, suggests that one of the most vital border security facilities, the NSW Customs Examination Facility, has been compromised by corrupt insiders, enabling criminals to import large amounts of drugs and tobacco undetected. Staff at the facility are responsible for searching containers suspected to contain contraband.
A small network of Department of Agriculture officials responsible for clearing imports into Australia have also been assisting and liaising with known drug traffickers for at least the past five years.

Co-ordinated blitz leads to charges over drug cultivation

SOPHISTICATED hydroponic set-ups and about 450 cannabis plants were allegedly seized during simultaneous raids on houses at Cromer and Curl Curl yesterday morning.

One room of a house at Curl Curl allegedly contained a sophisticated hydroponic set-up and two rooms of a house at Cromer also allegedly contained sophisticated set-ups.

The 51-year-old occupant of the Curl Curl house was taken into custody and he was later charged with cultivating a large commercial quantity of cannabis and possessing cannabis.

Northern Beaches crime manager Insp Craig Wonders said the hundreds of plants seized were at various stages of growth.

After entering both homes and taking the occupant of the Curl Curl house into custody for questioning, police then had to wait for EnergyAustralia personnel to ensure both houses were safe to inspect and then had to wait for an agronomist from the Agriculture Department to certify the plants were in fact cannabis.

Once the plants had been inspected and the houses declared safe, the plants and electrical equipment were removed from the houses.

Insp Wonders said the raids were part of an ongoing operation targeting the drug trade on the northern beaches.

He said neighbours of the two houses raided yesterday probably had no idea their neighbouring houses were being used to grow cannabis because the distinctive odour of the plants was ventilated from the hydro houses and there was no direct line of sight into the rooms into which the cannabis was allegedly being grown.

Insp Wonders said anyone who suspected cannabis might be cultivated hydroponically in nearby houses should immediately call Dee Why police station on 9971 3399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

He said things to look out for were hoses and pipes for water and air supply, windows or blinds that were never opened and remained covered or blackened, extremely bright indoor lighting at all hours, the erection of ventilation fittings on the roof, strange odours and a lack of occupancy or of people visiting intermittently and/or secretively.

Magic mushroom warning after Adelaide Hills teen caught by police

A South Australian teenager caught with what police believe were magic mushrooms has sparked a warning from authorities.

A 15-year-old Mount Barker boy was spoken to by police on Sunday and issued with a drug diversion.

Two youths ran away from the scene.

The mushrooms contain the psychedelic compounds psilocybin and psilocin.

Inspector Glen Sickerdick said the mushrooms were a "controlled plant" which meant it was illegal to harvest, possess, consume or sell them.

"We don't have this come up very often, but every now and then it is like everything, it just pops up ... where we do find somebody has either got magic mushrooms in their possession or they are on property and they are actually looking for them," Inspector Sickerdick said.

"Throughout the Adelaide Hills, we've got the right temperatures, the right rainfall and they pop up all over the place.

"Not only is it against the law to harvest the mushrooms from people's property but people should be aware unless they can correctly identify what it is and if it is a safe mushroom ... it can affect their health and they can become quite sick as these mushrooms are very toxic."

He said the teen's diversion would involve speaking to a counsellor and educating him about the risks of taking drugs.

Woman caught smuggling pure heroin into Adelaide has sentence reduced

A grandmother who was caught trying to smuggle 1.7 kilograms of pure heroin into Australia has had her sentence reduced.

Deliah Gidget Hudson, 51, from New Zealand, was found guilty of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which had a potential street value of just under $5 million, in November 2013.

The court heard Hudson had flown from Phnom Penh in Cambodia, where she had been doing paid and volunteer teaching work, to Adelaide with the heroin sewn into her backpack.

In October last year the Supreme Court sentenced her to nine years' jail, to be released on a recognisance release order after she had served four years and two months.

South Australia's Court of Criminal Appeal has reduced her sentence to eight years, with a new recognisance release period of three years and six months.

Justice Kevin Nicholson said the sentencing judge had erred in not taking into the account the time Hudson had spent in custody between November 2013 and July 2014 when setting the head sentence.

The court heard very little was understood as to the reasons why Hudson had committed the offence or how she was expected to benefit.

But it heard that given her family support and lack of previous drug offences, it was unlikely that she would offend in such a way again.
