If you can have a post not show up until it has approval, why not do that for the whole site?

I can actually see some flaws in that. But, ..why doesn't Bluelight have a specific day a week, and once a month where all posts need staff approval before appearing. For example, every tuesday and one wednesday a month?
 
it's a lot of work to approve every single post. there's no need for policing to that extent, we have disciplinary protocols to manage problematic posts.

what would be the point in having specific days to approve posts?
