UPDATE 27/03/15

Thanks to all those who volunteered to participate in this part of the study. We've now reached our recruitment target and are no longer recruiting in Bendigo, Vic. We will soon be calling for volunteers in Sydney so if you're interested, please keep an eye out on Bluelight -- we plan to begin recruiting in Sydney in April.

We're now processing, coding and analysing the data collected so far and will post findings as they become available.

Thanks for your interest in the study and thanks to Bluelight for publicising the call for volunteers.

Best wishes,
Kiran

Seeking paid volunteers in the Bendigo area (Victoria, Australia) for a study on experiences of living with a drug habit

Hi there,

I'm a research associate at Curtin University's National Drug Research Institute. I'm involved in a research project that explores people’s experiences of living with an alcohol or other drug (AOD) habit, dependence or addiction, including how they make decisions about drug use, drug treatment and everyday life. Importantly, the project aims to get a range of experiences, going beyond the commonly told stories of crisis and recovery. We’re keen to complicate ideas of addiction and to also feature stories of people who are coping and whose drug use is part of rich lives.

After a successful first round of interviews in Bendigo, and completed interviews in Melbourne last year, we’re now seeking:

  • People aged 18 and over in the Bendigo area who are working or studying

Participation involves a confidential audio-recorded interview of about an hour and you will be reimbursed $50 for your time. The interviews will be conducted in a location of your choice in Bendigo. The focus of the interview will be on living with and managing a drug habit/dependence/addiction, help-seeking, treatment experiences, and feelings about the future.

The information we gather will be used to develop an informative website for people experiencing issues with alcohol and other drugs, their friends and family, and health professionals and policy makers. This part of the study runs from January to April 2015 or until we have reached our target of ten participants. The study has been approved by the Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee.

Anyone who is interested in participating or would like more information can contact me directly at [email protected] or on 03 9079 2204. Thanks very much for your interest.

Best wishes,
Kiran Pienaar
