Found this site after looking for information on tapering off a short-term methadone abuse that developed quick and hard. A dumb move was self-medicating for pain with a decent but limited supply and no script. Usage after 10 weeks is about 60 mg daily. Realized it had gone too far when tried putting them down a couple of days and began having extreme anxiety and panic and relief came only after taking more. Uncertain what daily consumption was, so tried today with 40 mg and that appears to be ok. The person has no resources and no insurance, so is wanting to taper as quickly as possible and, like everyone, reducing WD as much as possible. This person is hoping that the short duration of the abuse will help reduce the difficulty of withdrawal and it took them a while to realize what was happening when it began, having no experience with opiates. Very frightened. Living with parents and informed them of what has happened and have told long-distance girlfriend. All supportive of the attempt to taper. This person has no idea of how to do that and what increments to attempt. Please, help this person, they are devastated and terribly frightened.
FOLLOWUP: Success!!! Bumps and starts in the process, but a gradual taper was successful. It took longer than I had hoped and twice I tried to reduce too much, but it was a lesson learned. Just take it easy, have support and know that it will work.
