Study: Social Media May Be Just As Addicting As Other Vices, Drugs and Alcohol
July 26, 2014

(WWJ) — Many consider social media as a “serious hobby,” but a report from Harvard University explains that social media addiction can be just as problematic as any other addiction.
The study shows that disclosing information about yourself via social media can trigger the same sensations as eating or drinking. Dr. Gerald Shiener of Birmingham specializes in addiction psychiatry and said that social media can be as addicting as any drug.

“People gravitate to social media because it’s a way to seem like you’re contacting people while you take no risk,” Shiener said. “You sit at you computer, people can’t see how you look, people can’t see your tone of voice, whether you’re smiling or not and you can really control what you show — that’s very safe communication.”

When it comes to young people, Shiener said that parents should be aware of what’s going on with their children.

“They have to have rules in the house,” Shiener said. “No texting at the dinner table; a certain amount of time that has to be spent outside your room — I’m not very big on letting kids have their own computers in their own room. Let them us their computers in public areas — the house — so people can see what they’re doing.

“Kids at that age shouldn’t have anything to hide.”

Shiener pointed out that it isn’t just youngsters who get addicted to social media — adults also lose the ability to interact with people if exposed too much to social media.

The Harvard report indicated that a person may be addicted if they post to social media in the middle of a crisis before calling for help or if they ignore the person sitting right next to them in favor of sending a post

The "addicting quality" is not in the social media.
It is in the human mind.

WTF no computers in the bedroom? You really want to see your kids masturbating?

That's just wrong.

I love when the experts say no computer in the bedroom, the kids all have smart phones. Stop giving advice from 2002. Maybe the kid is online reading the classics of literature, or just learning on their own. It's kind of insulting to say they are all on Facebook or playing games. 25 years ago a kid could spend all their free time in the library and no one would have a single negative thing to say about them.

^ Agreed in general, but then again 25 years ago there was a LOT less porn and video games in the library...

It is.......I talk to my nieces when they're in their iPods/iphones & they're in another world. Its all about who is doing what now a days & you gotta follow each other on instagram & Facebook, etc.......

Social media is out of control & getting worse.......

haha I love how we can give kids a hard time for being on social media when we are on one right now pretty much just for junkies lol
some of us post on here 10-20 times a day and some even 30+ posts a day is that not a bit much yes it is but we enjoy it and say fuck whoever gives me shit for being on my smartphone all the time. Its the time we live in and it aint changing soon you see people at restaurants all on their phones waiting for dinner instead of talking to each other you see people avoiding awkward silences by whipping out their phones and texting instead of coming up with something to say to the person in front of them all the time.

Hell, I've been addicted to Internet forums since I was 10 years old. Facebook is just another forum in my view.

Complaints come up about social media? I never hear that from anyone.

Internet is FUCKING AMAZING good thing the internet is around except for advertisements and signing up for every place you want to comment... waste of time mostly; still better mediated than traditional sources such as the news.

People once fretted over television because supposedly nobody read books anymore and television was not as *sophisticated*. Books have only gotten better and the educational programs on television and the quality of movies have grown but both will only improve and an international zone for anyone who realizes the importance of participating with something instead of sitting around complaining.
