does anyone have any experiences with buspirone (buspar) for anxiety?

I was just prescribed it and I'm a bit nervous to take it.

I didn't notice any difference in anxiety when I took it , i forget the dosage , but I was taking it 3 times a day , after 3 weeks I couldn't tolerate it any more because for an hour or more after every time I took it I would get the " brain zaps " like you would from withdrawal from an ssri . It was the SAME exact feeling . I was told no one even really knows how it works and it's in its own class of drugs being " anti-anxiety" so it's a weird drug for sure , I'm guessing it has some effect on serotonin due to the brain zaps every time .. give it a shot , don't be nervous about taking it . It's very mild and I noticed absolutely no changes in cognition or perception so it definitely wasn't mood altering for me . It's supposed to take upwards of a month to start noticing anti-anxiety effects , so maybe I didn't wait long enough , but I just couldn't deal with the relentless brain zaps every day . Good luck with it

Also might as well check these out

I just read it's " Buspirone functions as a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist" I knew with the brain zap feeling it had to be fucking around with my serotonins , says it also has an effect on dopamine . The research and mechanism sounds pretty good , seems to have a lot of uses . When I was in rehab they pretty much RX'd buspar to everybody , and I was the only one who experienced the brain zap feeling :p I always have had weird reactions to meds though , welbutrin and adderall put me fast to sleep , and ssri's keep me up tweaking and grinding my teeth like I've been up all night sniffing coke , ssri's also made me want to drink like a fish . As soon as I was off any craving for alcohol was totally gone and I disliked it strongly again . Rambling now lol . hope it works for ya

thanks Quantz!

I took it about 20 minutes ago and feel quite already :) no harsh side effects yet and I hope it stays that way. I took 7.5mg.

the erowid was interesting. it's a unique drug and I'm not fully sure as to how it works, but so far so good. thank you for your reply :)

No brain zaps, but I found an off label use for libido. And it works very very well.
A drug called Flibanserin has been going through tough times for FDA approval as female Viagra, but is similiar to Buspar. The bottom line is that it does do something to make you feel good. lol Even if the FDA can't prove it. I go round and round with my doctor about the studies. He doesn't think it is anything but a placebo affect. I disagree. I suggest you try it. It won't hurt. Very gentle drug. Worst case scenario, it will do nothing.

Evidence from a variety of sources suggests that the neurotransmitter serotonin may have a role in
HSDD by acting excessively as a sexual satiety signal. Serotonergic agents such as the selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) inhibit all phases of sex including desire, arousal, and
orgasm. Addition of the 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist, buspirone, to SSRI treatment has been
shown to counteract these negative sexual side effects. The 5-HT1A receptor mediates inhibitory
neurotransmission. Flibanserin, as a full 5-HT1A receptor agonist, is presumed to have similar or
even more pronounced pro-sexual effects as buspirone.

It is a 5-HT1A partial agonist, as well as a dopaminergic antagonist.

Let me know what you think of it - best of luck <3

You're welcome ! Keep us updated on how it's working for you , this sparked my interest a bit about buspar again .

thanks y'all!

update- I woke up feeling VERY calm and at peace today. which rarely ever happens for me. I got a mild spell of dizziness but that passed in seriously 5 seconds lol. I haven't felt this good in a real long time. I know they say it takes buspirone a few weeks to take effect, but I am certainly noticing the effects right away. I'm used to the constant up and down with alprazolam and the short half life, but I'm not taking that anymore. she switched me to clonazepam and obviously the buspirone. I think this combo will finally do the trick for me and help me lead a normal life, which is great because I have even struggling with this for 8 years.

interesting about the libido! I already have quite a high one so we'll see what happens LOL ;)

i've had drs tell me buspar is a useless drug and they would never prescribe it and would rather prescribe benzos but if it works for you that's a way safer drug than benzos are

i take 10mg buspar for anxiety and helps me a lot. i dont take it daily just whenever i feel like i need it. its much safer than xanax and is not addictive which is important as i am in recovery. best of wishes to you.

I thought buspar had to build up in the system to have the maximum therapeutic effect? Whereas benzos work better when taken intermittently.

Thank you :) I am taking 10mg 3x day and it has helped me greatly. Granted I am on other meds, but I have been on the Buspar for about 4 months now and I have certainly noticed an improvement.

I've been taking buspar for a week and already notice it working. Almost instantly it worked! The brain zaps aren't uncomfortable. I kind of like them. And they go away after an hour of dosing for me. Can't wait to see how it works after a week or so.

Oh and it makes sex awesome! I'm horny as fuck for some reason. My girlfriend is very happy with this situation.

I am also curious about this. I think I'll ask my psychiatrist about it tomorrow (even though I've heard it compared to a sugar pill soooo many times). Best of luck!

Sooo just got a script for 10mg twice daily. I''l keep you on the update. No brain zaps or noticeable effects yet but only dropped 1 an hr ago. Hopefully it's somewhat effective for meeee :)

Also, would this shit have any interactions with amphetamines?

Honestly I haven't felt the least bit different in the 48 hrs I've been on it. But we shall see...I'll try and give this one at least a couple months before I get all judgemental and flush up
