I felt like dying after smoking weed

Hi all,

I have had a really bad experience because of smoking cannabis lately, and I wanted to check if some of you might have some tips for me, or if some of you had the same experience.

My high started like normal, but after like twenty minutes, the worst 3 hours of my life started. First, I felt extremely dry in my mouth and throat. This is quite normal, it always feels like a dessert in my mouth.
After a while, my nose and eyes started to feel dry as well, to the point where I couldn't open my eyes any more and it was impossible for me to breathe trough my nose as it was too dry.
This was still all fine though, i've had a few experiences like this before. About ten minutes later however, hell started. Suddenly, my heart started beating really hard, it felt like it was beating 200+times/minute. It went
better sometimes, but sometimes it just went so hard that I thought I was going to die. I heard a very powerfull noise, which I can't describe. I've heard people say who almost died that they saw a tunnel when they
almost died. I saw this tunnel as well, and it felt like I was balancing between life and death. It felt like I could have a heart attack any minute, and it didn't stop for like ten minutes, I could really feel my whole chest pumping.
After a little less than an hour, it felt like my heart couldn't take it anymore. I had a lot of pain in my heart, and I thought it would give up. In the end, I managed to get trough it, and I realise that weed can cause an increased heart
rate, but I guess never this powerfull, so my question is why did I imagine this?
Will this happen again?
Is there anything I can do about it?

Thank you:D

i have had similar experiences.. i think its like a panic attack thats triggered by the weed. i get pretty anxious almost every time i smoke but there are some easy ways to avoid this i have found. one of them is to consume alcohol before, during, or after smoking, and another is to take xanax. i started taking 1mg xanax daily and now i never get anxious any more when smoking. hope this helps!! also, if you don't like the idea of popping xanax to avoid the anxiety that comes along with smoking, you can buy a 5-htp supplement on amazon for dirt cheap and that also really helps with anxiety and promotes good mood in general. a bottle of 120 100mg 5-HTP capsules on amazon is like 16 bucks. do some research on 5-HTP to learn more about it. it's all natural which is what i like about it.

Yep. Happenned to me the very first time i smoked too. Thought i was gonna die, vision got dark although at one point i also saw a tunnel of light, started to hallucinate (saw a black cat walk by me), heart felt like it was about to explode, wanted to move around but i couldn't. It's definitely a panic attack and they're horrible.

Like he said though, Xanax'll definitely help it and fast too. The other thing i noticed though was that once i knew what it was, it also made it much easier to stop it in my mind from then on because i knew what to expect and knew it wouldn't kill me.

The whole time it was happening though, all i was able to think of was whether or not i was going to die and that always just made it way worse for me. And it wasn't getting worse because i was scared of dying, it was getting worse because i knew that if i died, it would put a halt to the whole marijuana legalization thing which i'm a huge activist for. Don't let it scare you from smoking though. You just have to know it may happen again and be ready to face it if it happens. Only happenned to me once because i went in next time with that mentality.

I find this kind of thing tends to happen when I havent eaten properly. The dry nose and throat is really uncomfortable I agree.

this is defiantly a fairly normal thing to happen, some experienced potheads will find their chest starts to hurt and feel pressurized after a few sessions, maybe try to make sure your in a chill environment and factors like that :)

Ever time I smoke Cannabis I go to hell and manage to come back. I have had safer trips, but mostly I feel horrible, about myself and about the others. Paranoia is the mainstream and it effects everything. Every thing is noise, my heart goes very fast, and, I think I will die too.
As it goes off and things gets normal, I feel like I just don´t match with that type of drug. But in my case it was a very strong cannabis.

I've had exactly the same reaction.

Everything was fine, then I noticed my mouth began to get extremely dry, followed by a rapid increase in anxiety, followed by the typical symptoms of a massive panic attack, which, in my case felt like I was experiencing a heart attack because of the very fast heart rate, and the fact that my heart was pounding through my entire body.

Thankfully, I was fine after taking some Xanax.

I would say that if you're the type of person who has a history of easily getting spooked about certain unpleasant side effects associated with any of the typically used street drugs, that you consult with a psychiatrist in order to see what his or her opinion is. Or, perhaps try to take up meditation, mindfulness, or another mind training course.

P.S. - I didn't really bother to read through most of the replies, therefore, I apologize if I'm repeating what another BLer has written with respect to medical attention or alternative medicine. Cheers :)

Interesting. I should have used Xanax, and also take a couple of beers on the process. It would have been, probably, alright.
Next time in Amsterdam, we know the drill. :)

Re. alcoholic beverages + cannabis sativa (please bare with me here as there's a harm reduction point to this post, and not just random storytelling) - Very rarely have I ever combined booze with weed because it has ended in disaster on at least a couple occasions. And by that I mean, the infamous "spins" of severe vertigo and dizziness that occur (at least in my case) when mixing large quantities of both.

Plus, I've noticed time and time again that whenever I'm intoxicated from ethanol consumption, it turns me into a reckless, drug seeking obsessive compulsive, which has resulted in a couple of near death experiences which I'd like to forget. And to date, no other street drug does this, and that includes the "hard stuff" (heroin, meth, etc.) as well, but I digress...

Be that as it may, I have tried to drink a couple of beers myself before toking up and it helped considerably, but I am not sure it would be a good idea if my route of administration would have been ingestion instead of inhalation, as I've noticed that the effects of the THC tend to last much longer that way. The reason why this could be a problem is because booze has a fairly short half-life AFAIK.

Anyways, have fun and take care ;)

Marijuana Panic Attacks or Heart Problems

Ive also done some research into this issue. This could come from several things Panic Attack, lack of oxygen rich blood to the heart, Angina = caused by smoke which causes discomfort to the chest. Stress, porn and diet also which can be as simple as lack of vitamins or clogged arteries.
Not to be a buzz kill but I would definitely get checked out by a doctor and have blood work done before going to booze & Xanax.
On a lighter note studies show that some marijuana is not cured properly or Jared after drying which can cause a speedy effect vs a uphoaric high and calmness.

This has happened to me twice, but not exactly the same. My heart rate picked up and I was completely soaked in sweat, and then I would black in and out of conciousness several times.

On both occasions I was out all night the previous night, had not slept at all and worked all day. I'm sure this is not a coincidence. It wasn't a panic attack exactly as I wasn't really nervous. At the same time it was scary not knowing what was happening. I've also experienced this panic feeling after getting high and it's very similar to what the OP describes, however it may have been 20 or 30 minutes at most, not 3 hours.

always make sure you smoke in an environment that is at least familiar to you and somewhat relaxed.
panic attacks are a normal part of smoking because once that THC hits your brain those nerve cells just keep going on
and that is what triggers it.
for me its all about knowing my zone and the environment around me to make me feel chill..
next time just try to breath and calm your thinking.
its all good if your in a good place with good people

You just had too much. With high grade weed the dose needed is very small for a naive user.

It's not for everyone, I know massive coke/E users who can't handle it at all. Depends on mentality/genetics/etc)

If you do have it again, try some small hits only.

Like other people have said you experienced a panic attack. In the future if you want to try cannabis again be sure to have: eyedrops nearby for dry itchy eyes, some water for dry mouth, try high CBD strains they help some people with anxiety, and most importantly just start with a lower dose. If you need to reverse the effects of THC because of another panic attack, Ive heard chewing on black peppercorn will help. Also treat cannabis like a psychedelic, use it when you have good set/setting and try playing some chill music if you need to change up the mood

I've had that experience dozens of times. I micro dose now and only do it at home. I only need one hit too get wrecked.

one time while high on weed, I felt like I was gonna die so I wrote a will to my family.
