Is intoxication a basic human need?

Yes I do. As one said "altered states" at least. For relief of depression, anxiety, stress and even simply, boredom.

Actually our bodies have specific receptors because we produce these substances; endogenous Opiods, cannabinoids, serotonin, dopamine , ect... Recreational drugs are just most selective in those receptors and/or stronger, but the receptors in our brain and body are originally made for our own chemicals.

While I dont believe it was an original human need, I think evolving alongside psychoactive substances for so long has changed our brains to enable us to experience more pleasure from psychoactive substances.
I believe this has made changing your perception, while not a BASIC human need, a reward/pleasure 'drive'.
Totally agree with with ya on this one!

good thread. i think you might be right in a way, everyone strives to 'feel good' off of something. be it drugs, art, exercise, even food. no one seems to be content without some form of escape.

Some of us just can't do 'sober!' I can't. I fucking hate it with a passion. Yes, I think it's a basic human need. It is for me!
