When I had a pure sativa and I gave it to people that said they wanted and indica they all said it helped them sleep or whatever. I learned people can't tell the difference in Sativa vs Indica based on effects. No one can. Do it yourself if you don't believe me get 5 indicas and 5 sativas and blind test them, you won't do better than chance. People need to stop with the "indica does this" or "sativa is good for that" because its bullshit. Somehow this hippy wisdom has been passed on as fact causing people to needlessly chase down hard to find strains.

From http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2013/12/marijuana_strains_are_fake_study.php

"he even disputes the commonly held notion that the two polar types of weed, indica and sativa, produce opposing effects -- specifically that indica is more of a depressant and sativa is more of an upper.

The data shows that indica and sativa is just morphology [the plants' appearance and structure, not their highs]. It's a misperception that indica will put you to sleep or that sativa is more energetic"

i always thought indica and sativa were more medical terms. For patients who need certian strains for whatever treatment. I would imagine that certain concentrates change based on like their strain.

then theres "us" lets pack a bowl and see how it goes "man im high" "me to man" smokes another type of weed "you still high"? "yea man i am"
When smoking it to get baked, maybe on the surface there isnt a difference.
in the medical world im sure there is.

medical info on the two different types

gist:

What Medical Marijuana strain is best for your condition, Sativa or Indica?

There are three distinctly different kinds of marijuana-cannabis. Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis. Cannabis Ruderalis is a type that grows wild in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia. It’s occasionally used in hybrids (an intentional crossing of two different types of cannabis) to help the resulting plants be better able to cope with the cold weather. We grow in-doors using hydroponics and therefore Ruderalis strain is not required. Leaving us with 2 main cannabis strains and that is Sativa and Indica.

Sativa

Sativas and Indicas are very different, like night and day. They are tall, thin plants, with much narrower leaves and grow a lighter green in color. They grow very quickly and can reach heights of 20 feet in a single season. They originally come from Colombia, Mexico, Thailand and Southeast Asia. Once flowering has begun, they can take anywhere from 10 to 16 weeks to fully mature. Flavors range from earthy to sweet and fruity. The high of a Sativa is cerebral, up and energetic. Sativa’s offer more of a “head buzz”.

This type of high is the one most associated with hilarious fits of laughter, long discussions about nothing, enhanced audio and visual senses. You hear things in songs you’ve never heard before, see things in movies you’ve watched a dozen times but never noticed before.

A brightly-lit malls becomes a whole new and exciting adventure. Therefore, smoking a pure Sativa or mostly Sativa hybrid will make you feel great! Energetic and social and ready for fun! And depending on the particular strain of Sativa-Indica cross you smoke, you may get a good measure of pain relief in the deal as well.

Consuming (eating) either strain or hybrid of the two results in a stronger, longer-lasting high. But it doesn’t feel as good as smoking the herb does to many who have tried it. It’s a matter of experience and personal taste. It really depends on what effect you are looking for when making your selection and choosing a way to ingest it for your condition.

Indica

Indicas originally come from the hash producing countries of the world like Afghanistan, Morocco, and Tibet. They are short dense plants, with broad leaves and often grow a darker green. After flowering starts they will be mature in 6 to 8 weeks. The buds will be thick and dense, with flavors and aromas ranging from pungent skunk to sweet and fruity. The smoke from an Indica is generally a body type high, relaxing and laid back.

The “high” a person experiences when smoking a sufficient amount of pure or mostly pure Indica, such as Medicine Man or Warlock is more of a heavy “body buzz”.

You may feel lethargic, tired, unwilling to attend to reality tasks. Very laid back, lazy. You may just want left alone to sit and think deep, intellectual thoughts as you enjoy the pain relief.

You may find it very hard to stay awake as well, so this sort of strain would be good for those having trouble sleeping. This is the best sort of “high” for easing pain and most of the other symptoms these conditions.

A good Indica/Sativa cross can also offer the best of both worlds. There are many breeders who work hard to develop strains that will accomplish just that to give you a great head high coupled with a relaxing and definitely medically beneficial strong body stone.

Combining different indicas, different sativas or a combination thereof creates hybrids. The resulting hybrid strains will grow, mature and smoke in relationship to the indica-sativa percentages they end up containing.

All Strains are Potent:

The success of the eventual outcome will depend on your personal tastes and the conditions in which they are grown. Tests of THC percentages of most strains is rare and we are not really sure what the numbers mean when disclosed. THC is found in the resin glands that form on the plant during the maturation process. These glands act as a shield to protect the seed from the searing heat of the sun. From our experience this is needed more in a hot, dry atmosphere, than a hot humid one. To maximize resin production drop the humidity in the room for the flowering stage, the lower the better. But no matter how much resin you induce on an indica it's still not going to give you the stone of a sativa, so it does have a lot to do with your personal tastes and expectations.

All of the yields for the strains are approximate and depends a lot on how they are grown and the quality of the environment. Indoor lights don't penetrate down very far so it is better to grow a larger number of smaller plants to achieve the highest yield of top quality bud. Maximum yields indoors are coming from indicas and mostly indica hybrids, while the more sativa in the mix, the lower the yields tend to be.

The yield indoors is really limited only by the amount of light available, not the strain you choose. Given that it is a good growing environment, you can expect the yield to be about the same from any strain in relationship to its indica/sativa content. It is up to your designated marijuana grower to maximize the plant's potential in his space.

The most desirable strains for medical use are ones that have been genetically developed by experts to have an extremely low CBN concentration while maintaining an available range of THC concentrates.

Effects of Indica (lower THC, higher CBN/CBD):

Indica generally more physical than cerebral (however, the relief of physical symptoms can have a positive psychological effect)

Sedation, pain relief and relaxation
Best for later in the day and bedtime
Perhaps better for anxiety than depression

Benefits of Indica (lower THC, higher CBN/CBD):

reduces pain
muscle relaxant
relieves spasms, reduces seizures
reduces inflammation #006600
aids sleep
reduces anxiety and stress
reduces nausea
stimulates appetite
relieves headaches and migraines
reduces intra-occular pressure
bronchio-dilator and expectorant

Effects of Sativa (high THC, low CBN/CBD):

More stimulating and uplifting
Energizing and thought provoking
Increases focus and creativity
Supports immune system
Best for use in daytime

Benefits of Sativa (high THC, low CBN/CBD):

Reduces nausea
Stimulates the appetite
Fights drepression
Positive, uplifting, cerebral effect
Energizes and stimulates
Promotes creativity
Relieves headaches and migraines
Relaxes muscles, relieves pain
Acts as an expectorant

Sativa-dominant crosses are good for stimulating appetite, with the indica component helping to reduce body pain and increase relaxation.

Cannabis has been proven helpful in relieving the symptoms of thousands of conditions, including:

Pain from various ailments and injuries
Arthritis, bursitis
Migrains
Multiple sclerosis
Hepatitis C
Fibromyalgia
Nausea and low appetite
HIV/AIDS
Cancer, chemotherapy
Crohn's
Muscular dystrophy
Epilepsy, parkinson's
Asthma, emphysema
Glaucoma and other intra-ocular disorders
Skin diseases such as pruritis and psoriasis
Back pain and muscle spasms
Paraplegia and quadriplegia
Insomnia and other sleep disorders
Study finds THC promotes death of brain cancer cells and shrinks tumors

as you can see, to someone smoking it to get high, these differences are really relevant. to those that need it though, they are.

Also, when you are a total stoner weed becomes weed. It takes a low tolerance to be able to to truly tell the difference between strains.

I am a long time lurker and first time poster, In my personal experience, it really does matter. I use cannabis daily and with many different strains with incredibly different consistencies and smells. I am extremely lucky to live in Seattle, Washington because we have an amazing medical scene! Firstly it is a common misconception that CBD is what makes Indica Indica, CBD is not psychoactive on its own and actually has been known to negate some effects of THC intoxication. There are 100's of different Cannabinoids in Cannabis and the fact that it is a plant leads to a genetic diversity of these chemicals, all strains have unique and sometimes drastically different ratios. Pure THC has been described as uncomfortable and icky and I mean just THC, not an extract, The isolated chemical THC.

I smoke concentrates only and used to smoke a large amount of BHO shatter a day. After a while i slowed down because of tolerance and got some Super Lemon Haze (flowers not oil), a heavy Sativa. To my dismay I had an intense panic attack! I found that it made my head very hot, my hands clammy, and it was accompanied by speedy thinking with rushes of euphoria/dysphoria. I had used many heavy Sativas before but due to issues and depressions in my life at the time it brought out problems I think.

I have fallen in love with full melt bubble hash and I always have a few different kinds laying around. For example, I will describe the buzz of the heavy Indica Blueberry, over the next minute after the hit, it makes my body vibrate and buzz, my head feels full and I am very relaxed in a narcotic way. Sleep is often TOO easy and you don't want to do much. Now with my Sativa, I have Headband, it gives me almost no feeling in my outer extremities, but my face is warm and hot (hard to describe, not uncomfortable but the best way to describe it is, Icy hot patch full face mask..... =D ) My thoughts wizz by in a very trippy manner and I cheerfully show my enthusiasm.

Overall, from my experience and the experience of many other patients in WA state, it is definitely way more than a placebo, the problem is that to truly know what your getting is very hard and I wish everyone on earth had the ability to know what they are smoking. Hell, all of my bubble hash has been tested and has a chart online with listing for THC% CBD% CBN% CBC% CBV%, they even get a terpene profile and a mold check as well :) .

I never paid much attention to the sativa and indica labels, but I definitely get different effects from differing varieties of weed.
Some stuff is more active, others are more lethargic.

This isn't due to placebo because no one really bothers to name their bud types or discuss effects here , so you go into it with an open mind and no preconceived notions about what the effects of that strain will be.

When I used to smoke a ton , If I smoked just one variety I would become more tolerant to that strain than to others.

I think it is total nonsense to say there is no difference between indica and sativa, I have been smoking cannabis for over 11 years, most of that daily, and I can certainly tell the difference between the two. I know it is not placebo, because where I live buying weed does not have so many choices as most places seem to now a days, I do not get to choose between several strains or for the most part even know what strain I am being sold or whether it is a sativa or an indica, the effects I get from it are determined purely from smoking it and not any preconceived notion on how it will effect me.

While I am certainly a recreational cannabis user, I also consider myself a somewhat medicinal user, because if there is one time I smoke in a day and one time only, it will ALWAYS be before bed to help me sleep. I notice a large difference between some strains of weed how difficult it is to sleep on them, I feel like certain strains, which I am presuming to be sativas, make my mind race and I actually lie awake for about 45 minutes before the high starts to wear off and I can sleep. With indicas I can pretty much sleep the second my head hits the pillow.

I think there will always be a variety of effects between the same strain sold at various dispensaries for a number of reasons, for starters there is probably an element of fraud in it, where they will just present any strain and call it the more expensive/better selling names to get rid of it quicker, this does not have to be deception on the part of the dispensary, I am sure that it is not unheard of for growers to come in and misrepresent their product as whatever strain is flavour of the month right now. As well as that, you have to account for the fact that each strain can produce a number of phenotypes, which can vary between sativa and indica. Dispensaries obviously aren't going to the extent of distinguishing different phenotypes and there is always a possibility you could get a sativa pheno of a strain that is usually indica, I would think in most cases an employee would of sampled the current product line and be able to advise customers of this when applicable but surely there are less professional stores where it slips by.

You also have to take into account that the overwhelming majority of strains these days are hybrids, for that reason it makes sense that it can be harder to tell the difference between a majority of strains or that they may exhibit effects of both sativa and indica. If I smoke enough of a sativa dominant hybrid I still eventually end up feeling stoned/able to sleep, sometimes if I have an indica that has a little sativa in it and I only take a couple puffs at a time I am feeling quite energetic I can feel that little sativa influence as much as the indica aspect. In these times of hybrids ofcourse a lot of strains will show effects from both, that does not mean in their pure state there is not a huge difference between sativa and indica and to my mind there is a noticeable difference even between hybrids, depending which way they lean.

I think a lot of the people, much more than you would think, can easily identify the sativas and the indicas if given 10 random strains. As long as they were totally sober before smoking each one. I think this is especially true with the older stoners. I can say with confidence that I'd have absolutely not issue telling the 2 apart. With hybrids there would be some difficulty though.

I disagree with OPs post. Indicas and Sativas are like night and day. I have smoked both back to back and the effects are even more noticeable.

Meh.. people are different. Dark indy plants make me couch locked and sleepy. Bright sativa gives me motivation and ambition. Could be mental could be something else Idc.

Grown and smoked both strains. Collected the seeds from different strains to achieve this. Grown hybrids all sorts. First tried weed at 12. Now days I don't smoke but I agree with the majority of posters there is a difference between the two especially if your not high before smoking. It's now well over 2 decades since my first toke and even though I have quit I can say I'd still nail a pepsi challenge any day.

It's called placebo, and it's fairly strong.

Didn't mean to say placebo is the difference between indica and sativa. I meant that when people go into something expecting to feel a certain way, often they will simply because of placebo.

I new what you were saying dude and I totally agree.

There is so much bs marketing hyperbole around ganja now it's hilarious.

There is difference in effects between indica/sativa varieties but it is a lot more subtle than often made out to be, they both get ya stoned. More seasoned tokers would have better odds of identifying the variances whereas noobs/kids would believe what they were sold/told especially once stoned.

The vast majority of the time, when people refer to a strain as being a 'sativa' they do not mean it is a pure sativa, but in reality it is a sativa dominant or mostly sativa. Most growers do not have the time, patience or resources to grow pure equatorial sativas.

A pure sativa looks completely different to your normal garden variety indoor strain. The plant is much taller, making training and certain growing techniques essential if it's to be cultivated indoors. Techniques such as LST, supercropping and pot restriction are needed to prevent the plant from overtaking your grow room and hitting the lights, scorching the plants. The bud looks airy and less dense, as well as smelling and tasting different. The flowering period alone can take as much as four months, unlike the average of about 8 or 9 weeks for indica/sativa hybrids. There is no mistaking it - high of a pure sativa is completely different - most people think they have experienced what 99% of weed is more or less like, and then when they try a good pure sativa they often think 'wow, this is a new experience'.

If you believe there is no difference between the sativa and indica high you are simply ignorant to the facts. If you've been growing for any length of time you will know that there is no mistaking it, they are completely different beasts. Whether you like sativas over indicas is down to personal taste, but for many this taste is an acquired one and is something to be cherished and enjoyed like a fine wine.

The vast, vast majority of people - some even with access to dispensaries - will simply never ever get the chance to try a pure sativa and will be unable tell the difference. Your average dutch-based poly-hybrid strains are all very similar. Try something unusual like a Kerala landrace and you'll be in for a shock.

I don't know about it being subtle, honestly it depends on what sativa or what indica, but there are some sativas I wont smoke cause they make me feel uncomfrtable, and there are some indicas I simply wont smoke cause they make me too sleepy. The polar extremes, in my experience, are quite extreme.

I stand by my comment.

I actually do think there's a definite difference between a strong sativa and indica. I don't know if I'm in the minority but yeah.

If it's solely sativa, your heart rate is markedly increased than what it would be like on indica...and on sativas I usually get the urge to go out and DO stuff that seems exciting to me...

On strong indicas, though, I pretty consistently get the 'couch-lock' phenomenon where I just wanna sit in one place and chill out for a long time, at least a few hours. I understand that this could be partly placebo, but whatever man, I've been pretty good about spotting the strains on my own over the last few years...

I will say that the main difference, though, is heartbeat after smoking, especially in the first hour after smoking - there's next to no difference after having had indica, but my heartbeat will definitely increase off a sativa, and it's pretty easy for me to tell the difference, just saying.

You can disagree with me though, this is obviously a subjective issue, so...whatever man.

But I will say, nowadays, there are a TON of sativa/indica hybrids. Finding a pure sativa or indica strain, one way or the other, is not that likely...certainly dominant indica or sativa strains are definitely out there, but hybridization is very common. Honestly, I feel like that issue would be at the base root for a lot of the confusion and differing opinions on this issue...because I have experimented with a lot of strains that were pretty equal indica and sativa, and sometimes it's hard as all hell to differentiate between the two...
