Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome Support Thread

Fuck me sideways ...

... I guess we finally found a side effect from long term cannabis use.
That sucks . I thought the past 5years of fairly high use has done nothing .

Would a 3 week break every few months help prevent this due to the fact that we are allowing our cannabinoid system to work on its own .?

Im legit scared now haha . The reason being why I ONLY smoke cannabis and quit other drugs along time ago was because I thought cannabis had very little side effects like slight memory impairment , and slight withdrawl symptoms .
I never knew it did this =/

PS I vape virtually 90% of the time I get high daily (1.5gs a day usually)
.. If this makes any difference lol

^ I'm pretty sure a 3 week break would allow your body to reach homeostasis within the endocannabinoid system. Think of it this way, your body is probably a little out of whack and just needs time to adjust back to the way it used to be. With time this will happen, but avoid smoking too frequently in future. Maybe smoke just a little in the evening and not during the day ever. Or even just every other day, although I doubt this would be necessary.

never had this problem, I guess I dont smoke enough/dank enough for it to get that bad. after a while of daily use though, I always have to take a huge shit right before I smoke a bowl, but it hasnt made me feel sick.

Thanks for posting that Venrak.

That is interesting about the bath not providing relief from your symptoms as my observations echo your experience. The only place I have read that a bath or shower reduces symptoms is on Wikipedia and in media articles on Hyperemesis like the Aussie one where patients where demanding to use the shower in accident and emergency.

I'm just recovering after yet another bout of vomiting for 5 days and then admission to emergency to rehydrate and rebalance electrolytes..

Doctors have confirmed that the inistence on hot baths/showers to ease discomfort is very specific to this particular syndrome and is one of the key factors in assisting with an accurate diagnosis as many people do not admit to hospitals that they even use marijuana.

Also, purging or sticking fingers down throat during this vomiting phase is also not uncommon.

The only thing that will stop the illness from ever returning is to stop using the weed altogether. Cutting down will not ensure the vomiting will not start again at some random time in the future.

If you're a sufferer, it would be good to work out what the triggers are for you personally. For me it's vomiting as a result of anything... hangover, flu, gastro etc... if I vomit, I never stop... one vomit for me ends up in days of spewing up bile and visits to emergency to get fluids back in me..

but also note.. that while in hospital NOTHING they gave me eased my nausea or vomiting at all.. then finally when I'm almost in agony they gave me a mixture of Mylanta (antacid) and this pink coloured anaethetic stuff that numbed my esophagus which was burnt badly from all the stomach acid rising up constantly.... the easing of the acid reflux on the digestive tract was enough to allow me to fall asleep and finally stop vomiting.

I hope this helps someone... it's a horrible thing to have to go through again and again and again..

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my weed... but I also love being healthy and alive and it feels almost like the weed is killing me slowly when this sort of thing is going on..

it doesnt affect everyone mate... different people react differently to different things... you're lucky.. I wouldnt wish this shit upon my worst enemy.

Doctor and Drug Counseller at hospital (RPA) have informed me that some people are affected and others never will ever... for example.. my man and I go cone for cone.. he's never ever spewed coz of weed... I can say that I have been hospitalised for this about 15 times over the past 10 years, thinking that the cause was something else..

but the fact that constant bathing is the ONLY real form of relief is the thing that identifies you as a sufferer..

Dont live in fear people.. if you've never had it.. you may never ever suffer.... but at least now you are aware of it in case you or someone you know gets ill and has to bathe constantly til they are better.

Cannabis Hyperemesis still lacks any semblance to "scientific evidence". Many, many of the articles out there discussing it are filled to the brim with subliminal anti-pot fear-mongering and over-the-top illustration.

Think for a second - how do you assume your body would react if you smoked 15 grams of tobacco a day? Much the same. There are no studies that attempt to see if long term CANNABINOID use (via any ROA other than SMOKING) would provide similar symptoms. This is simply what appears to be anecdotal evidence. I wasn't convinced when this first surfaced in the main stream years ago, and I am not convinced now.

Anyway, if anyone doubts that the human psychological system alone can't produce symptoms very similiar to these (read: panic attacks, anxiety, social pobieas, disorders), then you haven't done your research.

It seems to me common sense would dictate that smoking a major abusive level of cannabis would obviously result in sickness. In all reported cases, ceasing to SMOKE cannabinoids have lead to the symptoms dissapearing - they are not prolonged.

The whole bathtub mythology of this has been mostly rejected - many people say they have Cannabis Hyperemesis and yet, showers and warm water do not help.

There are a number of medical journals published on this topic.

I honestly do not believe it is fear mongering at all... there have been studies in Australia, New Zealand and the UK all with similar findings.

I can tell you that during my bout of illness last week which ended with me being hospitalised, that NO.. the hot baths and showers did not stop me vomiting at all.. they gave me minor relief as I was SO SO SO sick...

so, please dont say this is bullshit as I can assure you, there ARE studies and the information to come from these studies reflects the symptoms suffered - well it resonated very highly with me... I felt it to be very true and correct.

Now I'm cutting down... and might give up if I feel like it.. wouldnt mind saving some cash anyway..

Hello! To anyone who has suffered from CHS, I need help!
My Boyfriend has had episodes of intense nausea and vomiting once or twice a month for about 20 yrs. He's had all the blood work done, seen a gastrointestinal doctor... everything, but with out a diagnosis. He has also been a heavy Marijuana smoker for about 20 yrs. Some episodes are worse than others, but he compulsively showers and he says it's the only thing that makes him feel better. He's been hospitalized maybe half a dozen times because he gets so dehydrated that his kidneys start to shut down.

So, we’re in the middle of his worst episode to date - we've been to the ER 4 times this week, he hasn't really eaten much in about 11 days, and he's lost over 20 pounds (in that 11 days) he's on zofran, phenogrn, and valium, and he still can't kick it. The doctors have said that there isn’t much they can do and that we just have to wait it out. We're just learning about CHS, and we've stopped smoking, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to pull him out of this cycle?

And to all those who doubt CHS -if you knew someone affected by it, there is no way you could doubt it. It affects just a tiny percentage of marijuana users and is NOT anti-marijuana propaganda.

By the way, I thought this was a support thread. I think there's a different thread for people who want to debate it's legitimacy.

No joke!

My boyfriend has been a daily smoker for over 10 years. About a year and a half ago violent bouts of cyclic vomiting and abdominal pains began presenting themselves regularly. The only short term remedy was a scalding shower. He has had every test imaginable and there was no medical answers. About 6 months ago my countless hours of Internet investigating paid off when I ran across the study of cannabanoid hyperimisis. It was all there. The violent vomiting, the unbearable abdominal pain, and even the strange bathing behavior, all paired with long term marajuana use. They might as well have had a camera in our bedroom for the last year and a half. As you can imagine, this particular diagnosis was not necessarily good news to him because he felt that smoking actually illeviated his stomach pain for the short term. Reluctantly, he decided to abstain from smoking to see if this syndrome could actually be the root of his sickness..... About 2 weeks later, all symptoms vanished just as the study said they would. He has sense relapsed several times, only to be immediately punished by the reoccurrence of symptoms. There is absolutely no doubt in either of our minds that this is the answer.

This really is no made up diagnosis by doctors to scare smokers into not smoking. I even hate that this had to be what my boyfriend suffers from. I never cared that he smoked, and just wanted him to be a happy stoner lol. I have read posts on other forums by smokers bashing on this research, saying things like, "I've smoked for 20 years and I don't get sick! This is bullshit!". To me these people are ignorant and need to be educated. I've lived it...this is real. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it's not real. You don't hear people say, "I've been stung by a bee a bunch of times and I never swell up or struggle for air! This whole bee allergy thing is bullshit!". As far as I can determine, this cannabanoid hyperimisis seems to be an allergy that certain people develope after years of marajuana use. Like the body developed a toxicity to certain components in the drug after long term use. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen to everyone who smokes!

Thanks guys. The only reason I subscribed to this site is because u all seem much more open minded and educated than other forums :).

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is a disorder associated with long-term chronic cannabis use that is characterized by recurrent nausea, vomiting and colicky abdominal pain has been reported.

that sounds fucking ridiculous. I would really take a break, and get on some new meds for a while - maybe try ganja in combination with something else.

Jesus, this thread it depressing. Why would anyone (and I really doubt the figure) want to smoke 100 joints a day. With pure joints that is at least 33 grams of weed and that is just if you are smoking small 0.3g small joints. That is just dumb and a colosol waste of weed. It is abuse not use, of weed. Sorry for the preaching... And if you are throwing up and you think it is from weed just cut down or stop.

Thank you, Jesus I cant believe this has even gotten to the near-mega-thread status...of course youre probably gonna feel like shit in your stomach the morning after smoking fuckin 12 grams of some Australian bammer weed...you dont think it has something to do with the insane amount of plant matter or rolling paper you just smoked??? Smoking and the things that come a long with smoking like coughing are known to have bad effects on the upper GI tract such as the ones that are described in this so-called new "cannabis hypremesis syndrome". Like grow&smoke says, if youre having that bad of stomach problems maybe you can smoke less than 12g of non-medical-questionable-quality cannabis??? Or maybe get higher quality cannabis and so you wont have to smoke as much. Im from the US where I have ready access and consume daily, high quality, MEDICAL grade cannabis..a year ago I traveled to a country in Africa where I stayed for a year, while I was there I could never find any cannabis that even came close to what I was used to and when using the African low quality cannabis I would find that I would have to consume sometimes 3-4x the weight of cannabis the I would normally have to consume to get the desired effect. Having to do all this extra smoking can really take its toll, especially when you dont know that your cannabis has been grown organically and sans pesticides.

Id hate to see this whole "cannabis hypremesis syndrome" be used as another way to demonize and diminish the medical cannabis movement here in the states and elsewhere, as we've already made so much progress, and to me this just seems like another way of doing that...you dont have a disorder people just find better quality and smoke less, please for eveyones sake.

Did you even read rest of the thread? Vaporizing instead of smoking made it only worse. Eating the cannabinoids wasn't any better. Why is it so hard to accept that extreme overconsumption of cannabinoids can be harmful? Extreme overconsumption of ANYTHING can be harmful in various ways, even plain water can be outright deadly. This thread is for people who have, for reason or another, chronically consumed way too many cannabinoids over a long time period. If this doesn't apply to you, please be polite and go somewhere else to rant instead of a support thread like this.

My dad was diagnosed with this syndrome just today and i have been looking online all day at different studies and am so relieved to finally have an answer to his problem that has completely destroyed his life for the past 7 years. He has been to every stomach specialist in new york and has undergone so many procedures to try to cure him. He had his gallbladder removed hes had dangerous nerve blocks and after years of visits to the V.A. Hospital they actually prescribed him methadone as a painkiller which he has now been taking for years and is obviously physically addicted to. He survives on ensure shakes only. He camt keep any food down at all. He is completely emaciated. The hot showers were the only minor relief he could find. Morphine given at the hospital wouldnt even help. This syndrome is very rare but very real.

Gday..

just a quick question before i write up a post about my 3 experiences in the ER....

TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED FROM CHS, what was your preferred way of smoking????

bong or joints???

and if it was through a bong...HOW OFTEN WAS THE BONG CLEANED AND HAD FRESH WATER AND WHAT NOT??

well if no one is gonna reply ill just go ahead...

ive come to the conclusion that this syndrome is the result of endlessly smoking cones through a dirty ass bong. let me define a dirty ass bong..or at least my dirty ass bong..

i would make a bong..and it would be in use for at least 6-12 months. i never cleaned it, never changed the water, once in a while push the yack through the hose since it was clogging up and i wasnt able to pull through. but yeh basically i was using a filthy ass bong..

now with a bong like that...im sure there are a fuk tonne of germs and bacteria in there...smoking through that is definately not healthy...yet i didnt care...i was just aiming to get high. and i did get high..

anyways i recently met someone who also suffered from CHS...and same thing with him..he also was using the same billy with the same water for at least a yr...never cleaning it or whatnot...he went to ER like 5 times. ever since he has been smoking through apples...and using fresh bongs..and has not been back to the ER

so after my 3 times in the ER..i stopped smoking weed for like 6 months. I started smoking again beginning of this year and i started to use clean fresh bongs....but during the month of june...i started to get lazy and fell back into the habit of using a dirty ass bong....in this instance...i used the same bong/same water for 3 weeks...after that 3 week period i decided to go on a detox and once the detox started...my stomach started to feel shit..it felt like CHS all over again but it wasnt full blown.. anyways it subsided and i never had to go ER.... but fuk me it really does make me think...its that dirty ass fuking bong..

anyway...thoughts on my conclusion???

This is very interesting. I have been smoking for roughly 7-8 years all together. I have been a daily smoking for most of that time.

Just before I started smoking I was having horrible morning sickness, vomiting stomach acid almost every morning. It lost me a job!
I could only stomach apples, I could have 2-3 apples a day during these periods (which came and went and would last 5-6 days at a time)
If I ate anything else, I would either get cramps or actually vomit. I started smoking and this went away.

Flash forward to last year. I started cutting down massively on how much I smoked and I still hold to that. I have noticed that I am vomiting more often and sometimes it is just like when I was young, only in the morning for a few minutes and then I just feel kind of off all day (until I smoke some pot)

I wouldn't say I experience any of what is listed in the OP. I feel that pot keeps those symptoms away for me... Maybe I am just lucky!

It is great to have ideas thrown around like this. Unfortunately I used to clean my bong twice a day.

I think it is all in the way the flora of the gut is changed by constantly smoking. I have been able to keep CHS at bay by eating Yoghurt daily. It may not work for everyone else but it worked for me.

how many times have u had CHS??? and when was the last time u had it??

the advisor at the hospital even suggested that the weed i was smoking..could have had some bad pesticides or what not..and that was causing CHS.

fuk...i was so certain it was the rotten bong..

can it really be the amount of weed smoken??

ive been a smoker for like 4 yrs...and first 2 yrs i was relatively low key..smoking couple cones/joints once a week...twice a week max...then in my 3rd yr..i went hard and was a daily smoker...having between 20-40 cones a day..

now come to think of it..another doctor at the hospital said this...
because you smoke so much...the toxins in your body from smoking weed have gotten so high to a point where smoking weed is doing the opposite for u. ie..instead of it being an anti anemic its making u vomit.

tragic...i wanna smoke weed..but ive had it with CHS..never want that shit again..
