I found a hard lump on the back of my neck, smaller than a marble. It's not squishy and doesn't move around under the skin. Feels like its well beneath the skin. I just noticed it today so it hasn't been there very long. This sorta freaked me out and I'm wondering if it could be something harmless, or if I should get this checked out asap. And would the ER do a biopsy or whatever of it or would I need to go to my regular doctor?

I wouldn't pretend to give medical advice as I am not professionally concerned with that area however:

I would go to a doctor - perhaps not ASAP to the ER unless you are feeling any deficits in consciousness or the like. I take it you are feeling otherwise fine?

What I do know about medicine though I can tell you that your notion that it is moving around under the skin would suggest something like a cyst - those are most often benign. I would doubt it is anything serious.

I am sure other people would be able to clarify if you are STILL worried.

I would schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. My brother had a similar thing happen to him on his cheek, it turned out to a benign cyst that the dermatologist was able to remove with minimal issues and discomfort. Apparently it had been filled with fluid at one point but he waited a while before seeing a specialist about it so they weren't able to just drain it of fluid.

Not saying that's what's happened to you, but its still probably better to see a specialist.

Sounds like a lymph node to me. How long has it been there? Are any others swollen? Such as under your neck by your jaw or groin, armpit, ect? Have you been sick? Look all this up I'm sure the info will help you. I've had swollen nodes forever now and they can't figure out why. I just pray to god its not lymphoma or hiv. As I will be tested for these upcoming soon.

But there's no lymph nodes in the back of my neck, only the front by your jugular and shit. No others are swollen. I haven't had any sickness that would cause my lymph nodes to be swollen. I'm gonna schedule with my dr this morning to get it removed/biopsied

we are covered in lymph nodes, mine seem to be rotting away -thanks TNF's - your lymphatic systems job is to run out any toxins, or stuff you cant digest and waste in most other ways.

i would be much more suspicious of a spider bite or a cyst - i cant tell anyone not to worry about themselves, or to follow their gut to protect themselves - but - even if this was a 'cancerous-tumor' which would of taken a while to develop, you would be showing other symptoms and signs as-well,,, and what good would it be to not do the most and best you can with every-day, if this were to be the case??

im afraid you may be disappointed if your doctor doesnt decide to do a biopsy...what seems most likely, and sensible IME, is that they will draw some blood, and check out your white-blood-cells first before anything.
annnd IME, biopsies of tissue take a while to hear back from, maybe 3-5 days before any conclusions are able to be made, maybe two weeks of waiting to hear something...

also, what would be most likely, is that your PCP would send you to see a dermatologist or an oncology/hematology center, if a second step is warranted from the blood samples, and palpation's.

dont let this get you twisted, its far too much to have to think about - especially if you dont need to. whats more important then this, is keeping your head on - otherwise youll be thoroughly miserable through and through.

I had something like that in the middle of my back. The original diagnosis was some sort of dry skin ingrowth, but when they went to excise it, it turned out to be some sort of cyst. Couldn't tell you what the difference was, but either way the biopsy came back benign so I was happy. Dermatologist didn't get all the bits out though, so there's still a small lump there, but it's not really growing so I'm not that concerned.

But definitely get it looked at by a professional as soon as you can, just in case. Best case: it's something benign like what I had; worst case aught not to be mentioned (not that it would need to be). Don't stress about it until you have to though-- it's much more likely to be something benign than not.

My boss I guess had something like this on his neck, it was a mucous something or rather. He said they stuck a needle in it and drew out a small sample and tested it.

I found another lump on another part of my neck. I realized its been there a few weeks but I didn't realize what it was. The one on the back of my neck could've been there for idk how long now that I think about it, I don't feel the back of my neck very often. I see the dr next wednesday, and he knows I don't have money to keep coming back and paying copays (they require payment upfront) and he's extremely patient minded in that area...he'll do all he can in one visit so I don't have to keep coming back. I'll update then.

it could just be a knot..and needs to be massaged out. when i used to play baseball(was a catcher so i was constanly throwing the ball) i used to get knots in my arm and some times my back. if you rubbed it, it would hurt but the only way to get rid of them was to massage them out. out coach was a masseuse so i guess he knew what he was doing and about 10mins later my arm/back would feel brand new. tho i never had it in my neck. a doctors opinion cant hurt.

so i guess I had a sinus and ear infection without knowing it, and it was draining and inflaming my lymph nodes. Antibiotics and I'll be good. I didn't even know I HAD lymph nodes where the lu mps are...but I guess I do.
