So I haven't shot dope in a couple weeks, but happen to be friends with one of my dealers all of a sudden. Like we kick it on the phone, go to the casino together, it's weird but anyway, we are sitting in my car in the hood out front of his house and his cousin and 3 girls all get out of this truck and in to a car. His cousin didn't even recognize us. So I said wassup with your cousin. He said his dumb ass is smoking them dippers again. I said what, dust? He said naw man, embalming fluid. I said no you mean PCP. He swears they are smoking cigarettes dipped in embalming fluid.

I've heard PCP has embalming fluid in it as a rumor never confirmed but can you get high smoking embalming fluid?

In prison we smoked motrin and it got us high. I know smoking certain shit will give you different buzzes but do people really smoke embalming fluid?

i call bullshit on smoking motrin and getting high, placebo maybe

ok, I admit. I was bored and figured I would make up a complete lie like that to impress strangers on the internet. 8)

Anyway, anyone with a brain larger than a pecan ever heard of smoking embalming fluid?

EDIT: I should've stated this as a hypothesis rather than as a firm conclusion, since evidence is lacking and the answer far from obvious:
Smoking embalming fluid (i.e. formaldehyde + other solvents) does get you high all by itself, from what I've heard/read.

There is apparently disagreement about whether it's a real thing or just a slang term for PCP that gets confused as a real thing. The people I know who claimed to do it also claimed it was real on its own. Just not very fun or good for you. Just like loperamide, if people say anything they are going to start saying it is really stupid to believe this. but i don't think that's obvious at all.

I'm not sure why it is so frequently mixed with PCP - I guess the effects are similar. Friends have told me it lasts longer. Where I've been people did know about it, but it wasn't a real popular thing among people I knew. Cigarettes dipped in that (with or without PCP, I believe) used to be called "wickie sticks" in Chicago, "sherm" (sp?) in Los Angeles. Mixed with weed, "fry," "wet," etc. In Chicago, in the ghetto, there were always people all jacked up rumored to have screwed their brains with smoking formaldehyde. (Supposedly because it's a cheaper high than actual pcp.)
I don't buy the motrin thing really doing much, but do explain what happened. I wouldn'ta believed imodium killed heroin withdrawal if I hadn't done it.

EDITS:
Note: Wikipedia's "sherm stick" entry basically claims that embalming fluid is just slang for PCP and it doesn't do anything on its own. I don't think that's correct. Google and you find all kinds of other sources claiming otherwise, including law enforcment, news articles, etc. (not that those are always the most reliable information about drugs!).
Use the search engine here and you'll find a number of threads on BL. The disagreement has been played out in these as well:

I have no direct experience, but no doubt people will start chiming in with their own experiences.

We crushed the motrin and rolled it with tobacco. It made you dizzy and in a fog for about 15-20 minutes. I ended up in the infirmary because I had a ton of gas in my body, like waking up from anethesia. Like pain and all in my back and shoulders. Definitely wasn't worth the high. Didn't happen to anyone else, the gas that is, just me.

Smoking actual embalming fluid is not going to do anything but make you ill and possibly kill you.

I think they are smoking PCP and think they are smoking embalming fluid. I haven't smoked that nasty shit in over a decade but we used to get the vials of liquid in North Philly and dip our cigarettes in it and that's what he described they were doing. Perception is reality. Tell someone it is embalming fluid, they believe, they are smoking embalming fluid if you ask them.

From a lot of the posts I've read elsewhere (not talking about the posts here, so far), people say that this is impossible and you have to be an idiot to consider it possible. But I don't see why based on the explanations I've read. I don't care one way or another what the answer is, but I do want to hear a reasonable answer. (For example, if it is a solvent that evaporates completely, that would be reason to think it can't be smoked at all -- hallucinogen or not.)

Some people do claim it's real, including some apparently reasonable -- or at least serious -- sources. E.g. here is the Department of Justice, which isn't the authority on truth, but presumably they do have employees who aren't stupid, maybe even some physicians, chemists, and/or biologists:

"Embalming fluid is a compound of formaldehyde, methanol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), and other solvents. Embalming fluid reportedly produces a hallucinogenic effect and causes the cigarette to burn more slowly, potentially resulting in a prolonged high."

I think they are smoking PCP and think they are smoking embalming fluid. ... Perception is reality. Tell someone it is embalming fluid, they believe, they are smoking embalming fluid if you ask them.
^I figure that's probably correct, at least most of the time, but wouldn't conclude that it's always true, at least not without some more explanation.

EDIT: Another plausible source. Note, this news story is specifically about a guy who smoked PCP with embalming fluid. But some of the sources reported on in the story seem to claim embalming fluid does have effects of its own (it is unclear exactly what they are saying):
While police don't track the recreational use of embalming fluid, a legal substance, local health-care officials say they are seeing more cases of the substance being mixed with drugs for a hallucinogenic - and often violent - high. Local emergency rooms are on pace to handle twice the number of embalming fluid cases as a year ago."

Okay I'm starting to think the evidence in favor of the "embalming fluid is REAL" hypothesis is outweighing the "NOT REAL" hypothesis. Here is the BBC News, which is not prone to putting out fake news stories:
"Recreational drug users in the US are using embalming fluid to get a high - even though it is highly dangerous and can make them violent and psychotic.
Research has found that the use of embalming fluid is becoming increasingly popular among young people who are searching for new drug experiences. ...
The most common method is to dip a tobacco or marijuana cigarette in the embalming fluid, then dry it before smoking it. ...
Scientists from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse interviewed 20 users from the Houston area. ...
They reported that the effects of embalming fluid included visual and auditory hallucinations, euphoria, a feeling of invincibility and increased pain tolerance. The high lasts from six hours to three days.

However, the drug also produced feeling of anger, forgetfulness and paranoia."
The story also says the following, which suggests that, although the effects are real, the formaldehyde is probably mixed with stuff like PCP at least most of the time:
"The samples from the street that have been analysed have also been found to contain PCP, an anaesthetic that was dropped by hospitals after it was found to induce hallucinations. It is this component that is probably responsible for the users' high."

I don't think the evidence is overwhelming, since drug news has historically been unreliable and biased in favor of hysterical misinformation, but it seems quite plausible that at least some people are really doing this.

Off topic a little but I do not see what people see in PCP. That stuff just made me like a zombie. It also gave me very violent criminal fantasies that if given the right situation I may of acted upon. It definitely wasn't a fun drug from my experience.

jesus christ!!!!! moticians can barely stand to inhale embalming fluid 10 feet away ,its HIGHLY carcinogenic ,u guys need to install a slap button for people like this that reaches out and smacks the shit outta them

you got high off motrin ,man im glad u didnt get ahold of banana peels or tea bags WOW

Why the wow? I don't get it. It's jail, it's full of junkies that want some kind of high. Those that never been might not understand but it is what it is. Jailhouse wine tastes like shit but we drank that too. WOW! HOLY SHIT! :\

I've heard of people dipping joints in embalming fluid. shit can kill you though

I'm with you. People who wanna get high will smoke all kinda shit! In jail I might even smoke embalming fluid -- definitely a worse idea than smoking motrin, maybe even deserving of a smack button! Speaking of "smack buttons," gotta go do something else for a few minutes...

Embalming fluid is toxic. It's meant to stop cells from growing. Ingest it and your cells will stop growing. It's not hallucinogenic nor commonly sold (except by people who erroneously believe inhaling something that will blind you is a great plan).

lol @ smoking ibuprofen

It was stupid. It made me sick as fuck but did give a weird almost drunk like buzz. When I went to the infirmary I got treated like shit by the prison doctor and the CO's just wanted to know who was passing it out. Jail infirmaries suck. I haven't been to prison in a long time and hope to never go back but when I said I was smoking motrin and started having pains in my back and shoulders (again it was gas in my body) they immediately went to well you shouldn't of been trying to get hi, who gave it to you. Snitching would of got me killed of course so I wouldn't say and they said well if you ain't helping us we ain't helping you and took me back to my cell.

Smoking formaldehyde will not get you high. I bet a lot of those articles were actually about PCP or a similar substance, not embalming fluid.

Hopefully if someone does try smoking actual embalming fluid, they use formalin which at least doesn't have volatile solvents in it as it is just an aqueous solution of formaldehyde.

And smoking ibuprofen will not get you high. Maybe the oxygen deprivation will give you a 'buzz', but there is no feasible reason why a COX inhibitor would get you high.

This thread is making my brains explode. :|

People were doing what they th embalming fluid to get high a lot at one time. It was a plot element in one or two episodes of Six Feet Under. Filled with class one carcinogens and a toxicological buffet I'd advise against doing it even if it did somehow get someone a little disoriented. Many times ppl thought they were doing embalming fluid but were doing PCP. Here is erowid on that >>> http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/pcp/pcp_info7.shtml
