alkyl nitrites or whatever the fuck they're called "poppers"!

That reminds me i need to get sum more lol

The ones that they sell in Australia are all shit. The ones that i bought were crap here, the guy said this is the strongest one, took a sniff and it made me sick and smelt really bad.
Nothin beats the good ole european rush:) im amazed ive gone through 9 bottles in the past 2 month lol

Most short chain alkyl nitrites have similar odours. The amyl nitrite I used to get in the 70s was in small glass vials, for use as a cyanide antidote (often ineffective). Compare that odour with isobutyl nitrite and you should notice the difference, but each on its own may be hard to pick.

For those interested, another way to work out what type of nitrite is in a product is to find the boiling point. This can be done using a heat source, test tube and thermometer.

If relatively pure, Amyl nitrite should boil at 97-99 deg C. Isobutyl and butyl nitrites have lower boiling points.

Be careful with heating these chemicals. Do the experiment outside, or in a well ventilated place. Some of the gases that evolve with heating are nasty; corrosive and toxic. For goodness sake don't inhale any vapors.

As for legality; I'm pretty sure amyl nitrite is banned in qld, although I haven't found a ref.

In South Australia isobutyl nitrite, butyl nitrite and amyl nitrite are Schedule 4 products and supply, sale, possession and administration to another person of these products is contrary to section 18 of the Controlled Substances Act unless specifically permitted and is therefore illegal.

From here

I can't cite a source re-legality BUT my understanding is that it would be illegal to sell alkyl nitrites for use as a drug (ie - to be inhaled), but that it can be sold for other purposes - "room odoriser", "video head cleaner"

This is the closest I can find that refers to legality:
Inhalants and the law

Use or possession of volatile substances is not illegal in Victoria . Most inhalants are common household products, so it is not practical to make them illegal. It is also unlikely that this would help protect young people from harm.

It is illegal, however, to sell a product to someone if you believe that it is to be used for the purposes of inhaling.

The Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances (Volatile Substances) Act 2003 was amended in Victoria, allowing police to search and/or detain for questioning young people under the age of 18 years regarding volatile substances in their possession. Police may confiscate these substances if they believe the young person to be in danger of harm by use of the substances. Police may also detain the young person for the purposes of transporting them to a parent, guardian or youth drug and alcohol service, as appropriate. See our Fact sheet 3.1 Young people, volatile substances and the law for more information.

The Volatile Substances Protocol (July 2004) has been designed to ensure a consistent response from all relevant agencies when responding to a young person who has or is likely to abuse inhalants and who has been brought to the service by police.

The Protocol is available at www.health.vic.gov.au/drugservices/pubs/volatile.htm.

Isopentyl Nitrite is another one i read as the ingredient for one of the american aromas. So many fakes in aus and online.

alkyl nitrites are the way better ones, the other isobul nitrate and amyl nitrate are way shittyer and make you feel really crappy and give you mad headaches. and much dirtier buzzes. Personally i really prefer a massive lungful of nos.

^ Mmm, Joshy I believe you meant to say 'amyl nitrite is the better one and isobutyl nitrite and other assorted alkyl nitrites are way shittyer (sic).' ;)

I was watching "Repo Man" the other day and the pun-rocker spilled isobutryl nitrate over the table and they were all sniffin it up. Fucking weird movie...

Err...all nitrites are potential carcinogens. Why?

Because they react with secondary amines in the body to produce nitrous amines - many of which are very powerful carcinogens. Check out some of my older posts for specific references.

Nitrosamines are also produced in small amounts naturally in the body due to enzymatic actions on nitrates, which are in many vegetables. Nitrites are also used as preservatives in processed meats (incl bacon) and beer, although antioxidants are now added to these foodstuffs which limit nitrosamine formation. Such was the concern in the 70's, that until it was found that nitrosamine formation was inhibited by Vit C, serious thought was given to removing bacon altogether from the US market. Sodium nitrite and salt greatly inhibit growth of botulism, and suitable replacements just don't seem to exist. NaNO2 also gives bacon and ham it's characteristic colour

Taking large amounts of a nitrite inhalant means potential for nitrosamine formation is far higher, particularly when taken with/after drugs containing a secondary amine group. MDMA is of course, a secondary amine.

To give you an idea of just how nasty nitrous amines are, think about one of the risks associated with smoking - pancreatic cancer. Smoking increases the risks of contracting pancreatic cancer, most likely because of the amounts of nitrous amines produced in cigarette smoke. Pancreatic cancer is supposed to be rare although I've known 5 people in the last 3 years that have died from it. It is almost always fatal. What's most alarming is the risk of contracting pancreatic cancer after giving up smoking. The risk ( nearly double that of someone who has never smoked) persists for a decade or more after stopping. While it is yet to conclusively proven, it is generally believed that it's due to nitrosamines.

So, while occasional use probably doesn't present too much of a problem in this regard, it's worth noting these properties and realising nitrites are not desirable chemicals to be consuming if you're concerned about long term health.

Micks warnings on alcohol and nitrites should be noted. Also the warnings on never taking Viagra with nitrites should be heeded, as this combo can cause extreme hypotension.

Personally, from someone who once got amyl in little vials (used as a cyanide antidote back in the 70s), I hate the stuff. It makes my head feel and look like a pumpkin. IMHO Alkyl nitrites (isobutyl is generally what's sold in shops) should be used for what they're best suited for - as solvents or reactants in syntheses.

I always knew that shit felt like it just couldn't be good for you

Hmmm i couldnt live without poppers. There the best to use with any other drug. It intensifies it by 100x. Nothing beats laying on the bed on 2 tabs of acid and taking a whiff of poppers. A massive wave of euphoria hits u in slow motion for a few mins and u get the maddest OEV ever.

Ive gone through heaps n heaps of bottles lol and also bit concerned about the health risks involved.

Have these things been confirmed as neurotoxic? It 'feels' like the kind of thing that should fry your braincells, but I've never actually seen a source confirm that they do.

I don't think there's been anything that shows direct neurotoxicity, but there's certainly lots on carcinogenicity and immuno-suppressive effects.

This somewhat old paper has many refs to journal publications on the subject. It has a lot about prevalence of AIDS and other disorders among homosexual men, but there's also many references relevant to the effect of nitrite inhalants on gene suppression, changes in immune function etc. Worth a browse if anyone is convinced these things are harmless.

Poppers and immunosuppression

I'd say it only intensifies it 5x max and doesn't even scrape the surface of what nitrous oxide is capable of when tripping

^hey why not do both! Actually I have heard tale of putting a few drops of amyl in your cracker - but frankly that scares me - I just stick to doing them sequentially ;)

Poppers and immunosuppression

I'm not so concerned about immunosuppresion, since it would be an occasional thing, carcinogenicity would depend on the extent to which are they are so, and I imagine if it was extensive with even occasional use we'd hear more about it. Mostly I'm just worried about my braincells, I've decided I'm actually quite fond of them and want to keep as many as possible.

I don't know why the gay guys in melbourne love this shit so much 8o

nasty nasty stinky stuff... yew

heya PD thanks for the information, im surprised that these findings are not more well known in the GLBT scene !!! a good point in case to discus in HR circles further. As for your question hyroller- amyl's side effects are loosening of muscles namely the sphinter= less pain

Yea we used to sniff the fumes that came from Jungle Juice whilst peaking on Ecstasy.. During the comedown was good too, used to bump the peak back up :)
