I need to find a good psychiatrist in Melbourne, how can I find one thats decent and not just some random one the GP picks out of the phone book. I also am trying to find Dialectical behavioral therapy as well. Does anyone know where I could go for this?
Thanks

I am going to send this to Australian Social.

Mods, if you think it's better off in TDS, send it back rather than close it. Thanks!

You could try choosing one yourself- heres a map to psychologists/psychiatrists in Australia http://www.beyondblue.org.au/index.aspx?link_id=107.1007

If your looking for DBT in particular, you may want to email beyondblue and ask them if they know of a specific practitioner.

There is a lot of ways that you can get the treatment that is best for you; good luck :)

I know "The Melbourne Clinic" on Church st Richmond has a range of Psychological services. You could try them.

I second swillow's suggestion of contacting beyondblue (1300 22 4636) or Mensline Australia (1300 78 99 7eight). Both lines are underpinned by monumentally detailed, independent databases of services. These helplines/ info lines are also staffed by incredibally talented and caring psychologists and counsellors who will be best placed to assess/ recommend services to suit you.

As somewhat of a disclaimer i do work for an organisation that is linked to those listed above, but close friends have contacted them independently and have given me nothing but glowing reports.

Beyondblue is purely infomation and referral, whereas Mensline Australia has the capacity to do counselling. Both are free services (well cost of a local call).

Goodluck on your journey :)

It depends on what area you are in. Try to get one near your place. When you need to see a shrink, your brain does try to not go and a great excuse it will come up with is that the shrink is too far away.

I can recommend you not see a GP who does not have a clue about who the good specialists are. Start with a gp that actually gives a shit. Dr Wu on Smith St Collingwood bulk bills, and actually gives a shit. If hes not there, the female doc might not be as good but still gives a shit.

Psychiatrists are a strange bunch. You do need a combo of psychiatrist and psychologist by the looks of it.

Jane Hall in Preston: good psychologist but...likes to talk more about her fees and how you are expected to pay them and how you pay up front first and pay for missed appointments. Put me off from the get go.

Turning Point in Fitzroy+ brilliant. Long waiting lists though. I was told a 14 week list till I could get an initial assessment when I looked into it. So if you want to go there, go to St Vincents Hospital and see the psych nurses in Emergency. One of those guys got me in after I ended up there within 2 days. :\

Generally, Psychiatrists are more about making sure you are improving/coping with meds they prescribe. The dealing with behavioural issues/ trauma/ whatever- which would be the underlying factors in you needing the meds- they dont seem to want to take their time with. That has never made sense to me, apart from the whole money making side of things.

Good luck!

Shop around.
