A MAN has been charged after police foiled his attempt to smuggle drugs into a prison cell.
The 26-year-old Oakleigh man was visiting the Sunshine police station with clothing and personal items for a male friend who was being held in custody.
Police found a syringe head, five needles, 20 MS Contin, 96 Temazepam and a quantity of cannabis hidden in a hollowed out area of a shoe.
Acting Senior Sergeant Adam Fry said the drugs bust was due to the diligence of three members who were performing prisoner escort duties.
“They all did a good job; you have to be alert and on the ball in these situations, especially when dealing with prisoners,’’ he said.
“Let this be a lesson to anyone else who thinks they can come in here and pull the same trick.’’

Home-grown: Sydney dope franchise raid
July 3, 2009 - 1:49PM
A split-level Sydney house in a quiet suburban street was emptied and turned into a "self-growing" cannabis operation that nurtured hundreds of cannabis plants, police say.
Officers investigating drug supply in north-west Sydney raided the house - on James Cook Drive at Kings Langley - about 6.45am today, said Inspector David Lagats from Quakers Hill police.
"There was nobody home at the time but we discovered an elaborate hydroponic set up, with lights and irrigation," he said.
Police have removed more than 400 plants from the house, believed to be worth more than $600,000.
The plants - from seedlings to fully-matured plants - were found in nine separate areas of the four bedroom house, Inspector Lagats said.
The hydroponic set up was comparable to other cannabis houses that have been discovered by police, and featured indoor lighting, fans, irrigation and power diverted from the mains.
But unlike previous discoveries, police found no one living inside the Kings Langley house.
"It appears the house has been cleared for the purpose of growing cannabis," Inspector Lagats said.
"They had lighting and irrigation so it was virtually self-growing."
But those running the operation appeared to have occasionally checked in on their plants.
Investigators had some leads on those responsible for the operation.
Today's Kings Langley discovery follows countless similar finds across Sydney in the past year.
These include the discovery of eight drug houses in the south-western Sydney of Blair Athol in one week last May, in which 2500 plants and and more than $23 million in drugs and assets were seized.
A month later, ten homes were raided in a single day in St Marys and surrounding suburbs.
Last week a little girl was found inside a St Marys house allegedly containing 172 cannabis plants and a sophisticated hydroponics set-up, police said.
In February, detectives investigating Sydney's cannabis growing syndicate described how its leaders employed a "franchise" model to grow cannabis an supply plants to other houses.
The revelations followed the discovery in February of a Bexley home that had an underground drug den and an escape tunnel.
The house was believed to be one of the syndicate's headquarters that supplied plants to other homes.
Inspector Lagats said it was too early to say whether the Kings Langley home was part of a syndicate.
Police have previously discovered cannabis houses after tip-offs from suspicious neighbours.
The NSW Police website now includes a page showing people how they can identify a "drug house".
Inspector Lagats said today's raid at Kings Langley was prompted by "information uncovered during an ongoing investigation".
