Four on drug charges in NW

CHARLES WATERHOUSE

October 25, 2009 08:36am

FOUR people have been arrested and charged with drug-trafficking on the North-West Coast.

Inspector Mark Wright said yesterday that in the past week Western District Drug Investigation and Burnie CIB officers had made several arrests in the Burnie area. He said three men and a woman aged between 19 and 38 had been charged with trafficking controlled drugs.

Insp Wright said two other females would be served with summonses for drug-related offences. He said the arrests related to trafficking between May and September.

A number of people have appeared in North-West courts recently on drug-trafficking charges.

Insp Wright said that on September 7 about 1000 ecstasy tablets were seized and police later charged two Burnie men with trafficking.

In July a Devonport man who last year sold ecstasy and speed worth more than $65,000 appeared in the Supreme Court in Burnie.

Joshua Noel Parker, 36, of Nichols St, pleaded guilty to two charges of trafficking in a controlled substance.

The court heard Parker was charged after he sold ecstasy pills to an undercover police officer outside a Devonport hotel.

The deal was organised via mobile text messages and was one of more than 600 drug-related calls recorded on two phones owned by Parker between March and September last year. Parker sold 2300 ecstasy tablets worth between $65,000 and $72,000 over that period.

In February, a former Tasmanian and Australian go-kart champion who sold 100 ecstasy tablets to an undercover police officer in a carpark avoided jail.

Marcus John Burford, 22, formerly of Latrobe, pleaded guilty to one charge of drug-trafficking and was sentenced to three months' jail, which was suspended on condition he be of good behaviour for two years. He was also fined $1000.

Police believe there will be a significant disruption to the supply of drugs in the Bendigo region following the completion of a four-month operation.

A 20-year-old man, believed to be the supply source for the Bendigo drug syndicate, was arrested and charged following a raid on Thursday.

Sixteen people have been charged as a result of drugs raids in the past few weeks.

Bendigo's Acting Senior Sergeant Peter Wardell says the operation is a clear message to drug syndicates that regional police are on alert.

"Particularly in regional areas, it has a large impact in the community," he said.

"We once again appeal to any people out there, if they do know of any person involved in the drug trade, the manufacturing or the trafficking of drugs, to certainly call Crime Stoppers."

Drug supply ring busted Nine arrested during operation

BY MARK O'BRIEN

27/10/2009 10:45:00 AM

NINE men who were allegedly part of a Sutherland Shire-based drug manufacture and supply ring have faced court.

Police from the firearms and organised crime squad seized almost a kilogram of cocaine and 10,300 ecstasy tablets during a controlled drug buy at Lilli Pilli last Thursday and a series of later raids at Bundeena, Cronulla, Gymea, Miranda and Blacktown.

Three men, Daniel Leocata, 21, of President Avenue, Kirrawee; David Norman Ockrim, 51, of Spur Crescent, Loftus; and Nicholas Ockrim, 21, of Elouera Road, Cronulla, were arrested during the drug buy in a car park near Lilli Pilli Oval at about 11am.

They were charged with a total of 65 drug offences including supplying large commercial quantities. David Ockrim was also charged with one count of manufacturing an illegal drug.

Police later raided four properties and arrested Abdul Karim Hassan, 20, of Port Hacking Road, South Caringbah; Marc Zinnato, 20, of Burrinjuck Place, Miranda; James Vanderlaan, 23, of Kungar Road, Caringbah; Benjamin McCarty, 23 of Urunga Parade, Miranda; and Ken Rolston, 55, of Scarborough Street, Bundeena.

They were charged with a total of 36 drug supply and possession offences.

They faced Sutherland Local Court last Friday and were expected to appear for bail applications in Central Local Court this morning.

They were supported in court by a packed gallery of family and friends who called messages of support to each man as he was led back down to the holding cells.

A ninth man, Harry Palmer, 36, of Seven Hills, was also arrested on Thursday in connection with the same operation and police seized a tablet press from the Blacktown address.

Police said officers involved in Strike Force Brotherglen, formed to crack the syndicate, conducted a number of controlled drug-purchase operations during a six-month investigation.

Sutherland police commander Superintendent Gavin Dengate said the strike force was formed in response to strong police work and eventually included officers from Sutherland, Miranda and the State Crime Command.

Mr Dengate said the drug seizures would put a big dent in the shire's illicit drug market and served as a warning to those who sold drugs.

"Credit goes to our detectives,'' he said.

"Their commitment and dedication over several months has prevented large amounts of prohibited drugs from getting into the hands of our kids.''

Man charged after drug raid in Prestons

Wednesday, 28 Oct 2009 03:43pm

***Editors note: Footage of the raid will be available via Network Ten this afternoon. Still images will also be available via email by contacting the NSW Police Media Unit on (02) 8263 6100***

Liverpool detectives investigating a house fire in Prestons last night unexpectedly located more than 4kg of methylamphetamine (ice) and other chemicals consistent with the manufacturing process of illegal drugs during a search of the premises.

Police and Fire Brigade officers were called to the home in Stansmore Avenue about 1.30pm yesterday after receiving reports of a fire. When they arrived the premises were described by police as being “well alight”.

Once the fire had been extinguished hours later and detectives called to the scene to investigate the cause, they allegedly found bags containing large amounts of the drug ice with an estimated street value of $1 million. They also allegedly located large quantities of chemicals that can be used to “cut” the drugs in order to reduce the purity.

During the search, two of the detectives received minor injuries after being exposed to these cutting agents that were allegedly kept in a cupboard. They suffered a burning sensation to their eyes and were treated by a doctor. There is no permanent damage and both have been cleared to return to duty.

The 32-year-old man who resides at the house was arrested when he arrived home about 9pm. A search of his luxury car allegedly located further resealable bags of the drug ice and more than $10,000 in cash.

During a further search this morning police allegedly located another $70,000 in cash on the premises. The search by Liverpool police and specialist chemical operations detectives from the Drug Squad is continuing.

The man was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was later charged with supply large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, three counts of supply prohibited drug and charges under the proceeds of crime act. The man’s car was also confiscated.

He was refused bail and will appear in Liverpool Local Court this afternoon.

DRUG FIND: Chemical with potential to make methylamphetamine worth $26m found in drums buried on remote properties.

Chemical find keeps $26m worth of meth off streets

Nicole Cox, police reporter

October 29, 2009 04:00pm

WA police have seized 100kg of red phosphorous which had the potential to make methylamphetamine worth $26 million.

Acting on intelligence, detectives yesterday discovered two stashes of the chemical, commonly used in fireworks and flares, buried underground about 50km from Port Hedland.

Officers believe the find will severely disrupt the operations of a major drug syndicate.

The hauls had been covered in fire retardant material and placed inside plastic drums which were buried.

Detective Superintendent Charlie Carver, from the Organised Crime Squad, said the find came after a protracted police operation spanning several months.

``It's a huge breakthrough. It's probably the biggest red phosphorous seizure that we've ever had in this state,'' he said.

``We've been told it was going to be used in the manufacture of methylamphetamine.

``It's a very lucrative market out there. It's worth more than $26 million. People do it for a profit at someone else's expense. They are dealers in death. They are pushing this stuff out to our kids.''

But Det-Supt Carver expressed concern over the chemical's volatility. If heated, red phosphorous can transform into white phosphorous, which will ignite at 30 degrees. Phosphene gas can also be fatal.

He said with a standard flare using 18g of phosphorous, the potential for disaster, should 100kg ignite, could have been catastrophic.

``This material is very heavily sought after by people who manufacture methylamphetamine. When mixed with precursors it has the capacity to make approximately 800kg of methylamphetamine,'' he said.

``People who deal in that sort of material in backyards and in houses are not only putting themselves at risk, they're putting people next door and radiuses of 100m and 200m (at risk).

``The material can come in from overseas. It can be shipped into the country or it can be made locally. It is extremely volatile, (and) as been used in the mining industry.''

He said no one had been charged over the find, but police investigations were continuing. He would not disclosed if police were pursuing persons of interest over the chemical find.

Meanwhile, police last night seized ammonia gas from a Huntingdale property after residents reported a strange odour coming from a house in Olney Court.

Police located a 9kg gas bottle containing the gas in a back shed. But as organised crime detectives decanted the ammonia, the gas cylinder exploded.

Ammonia gas is considered a dangerous good under the Poisons Act, and a permit is required to possess it.

A 43-year-old woman who lives at the house has been interviewed by police, but charges are yet to be laid.

Dealer's dream penalty

DAVID KILLICK

October 30, 2009 02:00am

A MAJOR drug dealer can cling to her dream of being released on Christmas Day, thanks to the mercy shown by a Hobart magistrate.

Angela Maree Leahy is serving 18 months' jail for selling $160,000 worth of amphetamines. Her earliest possible parole date is December 25.

The 39-year-old appeared before Magistrate Peter Dixon yesterday seeking an indication of what sentence she might get if she pleaded guilty to a range of drug and driving offences she committed earlier this year while on bail awaiting sentencing.

Leahy was charged with possessing a controlled drug, selling a controlled drug, using a controlled drug, unlawful possession of property, breach of mail, using an unregistered motor vehicle, using a motor vehicle without premium cover, dishonestly displaying a document calculated to deceive, refusing to submit to a blood sample and driving a motor vehicle with an illicit drug in her blood.

Police prosecutor Kees Van Meer told the court Ms Leahy was arrested by police in Glenorchy in May with 4.5g of methamphetamine, $1900 cash, valium and MDMA (ecstasy) tablets in her car.

The numberplates on her car didn't match and didn't belong to the car, which was also unregistered, he said.

When interviewed by police, Leahy admitted possessing the methamphetamine for her own use, but denied knowing about a notebook found in her car with names and phone numbers in it.

Police alleged her mobile phone was full of text messages about drug deals.

Leahy was also arrested on May 1 for driving with drugs in her system.

Defence lawyer Peter Warmbrunn said Leahy was recovering from a significant drug addiction and was hoping to be paroled from jail on Christmas Day.

Magistrate Dixon indicated he would impose a sentence that involved a six-month suspended jail term, fines and a driving disqualification.

Leahy pondered the offer for around three seconds before pleading guilty to all charges.

She was convicted and sentenced to the suspended jail term for the drug offences, a $600 fine and 12 months' suspension for the motor vehicle offences and $150 fine and a three-month licence suspension for driving while on drugs.

Leahy was convicted of drug trafficking on July 1 and sentenced to 18 months' jail with six months of the sentence suspended and a six-month non-parole period.

Millions of ecstacy tablets a day: pill presses seized

Queensland police have seized three pill presses capable of producing almost 250,000 tablets an hour.

A 32-year old man has been charged following the seizure of the three large commercial pill presses and restricted items capable of manufacturing amphetamine-type stimulants in huge volumes.

A police statement said an operation started in May has led to the seizure of a pill press capable of producing 110,000 tablets an hour from a storage facility in Ipswich.

It is alleged the press had been imported into the country in July.

Two further pill presses, each capable of producing 66,000 tablets an hour, were seized on Thursday following their arrival into Australia last week.

A consignment of restricted glassware, including reaction vessels, condensers and splash heads, all capable of being used to manufacture illicit drugs were also seized as part of the operation.

All items are classified as restricted under the Drugs Misuse Act and carry a maximum penalty of 15 years.

Detective Superintendent John Pointing of the State Drug and Property Crime Group said the seizure of this type of equipment was timely.

"While individually presses of these size are capable of producing thousands of pills per hour, if used by an organised network we could see more than two million amphetamines, including ecstasy pills, produced each day," he said in a statement.

"This would be dangerous at any time of the year, but with Schoolies and end-of-year celebrations fast approaching we are extremely pleased to have prevented the market being flooded with these types of illicit drugs."

The man is charged with three counts of possession of a relevant thing and one count each of possession of a thing, possessing a dangerous drug, possessing a utensil and possessing things.

He will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

Cousins' mate on drug trafficking trial in WA

November 4, 2009 - 5:36PM

quaid-420x0.jpg

A long-time friend of AFL star Ben Cousins conspired with another man to traffic 45kg of MDMA or ecstasy, a Perth court has heard.

Fabian Quaid, 33, a former Olympic athlete and mate of Cousins, is on trial in the West Australian Supreme Court, charged with conspiring with others to take possession of MDMA powder after it arrived in WA on a cargo ship last year.

Dimitrios Papadimitriou, 39, of Queensland, is also on trial for the conspiracy.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her opening address to the jury, prosecutor Gillian Braddock showed the court a series of videos and photographs taken during a covert police investigation last year.

Ms Braddock said a video, filmed at Fremantle port on the night of April 16 last year, showed a small boat, with no lights on, moving away from a commercial ship.

She alleged the boat removed two bags of MDMA powder, weighing 45kg from the cargo ship.

Ms Braddock said the drugs were uncovered by police during a secret search of a granny flat in Lockridge, in Perth’s north-eastern suburbs, on May 8.

Investigators replaced the drugs with a fake substance so they could continue to monitor the house, she said.

Recorded phone conversations, photographs and video evidence would form the basis of the prosecution’s case against Quaid and Papadimitriou, Ms Braddock told the jury.

Police have alleged both men are members of an international drug syndicate which was the focus of the police operation that led to the bust.

Ms Braddock said the conspiracy was believed to have started during a meeting between Quaid and another man in July 2007.

The cargo ship filmed at the Fremantle port was believed to have travelled from a port in the United Kingdom, visiting ports at Mauritius and Sydney before its arrival in WA.

On Monday, potential jurors were told AFL stars Cousins and Michael Gardiner would be mentioned during the six-week trial, which started today.

Quaid, who was living in Manly in Sydney at the time of his arrest last year, represented Australia in tae kwon do at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The trial continues, with the accused’s defence team to open their case this afternoon.

Seven arrested, charged following major drug operation – NSW Central Coast

Saturday, 07 Nov 2009 05:53am

Police have put a significant dent in the illicit drug trade on the state’s Central Coast after charging seven alleged members of a speed and ecstasy syndicate.

Officers attached to the Brisbane Water Local Area Command’s Drug Unit commenced ‘Operation Kosmina’ earlier this year to target the illegal supply of Methylamphetamine (speed) and MDMA (ecstasy) locally.

Following a lengthy investigation, the covert operation was expanded to incorporate Tuggerah Lakes LAC investigators and the Region Enforcement Squad at Gordon, in Sydney’s north.

The operation culminated yesterday (Friday 6 November) in the arrest of three men and four women and the seizure of speed and ecstasy, worth approximately $100,000 on the street.

Two men, aged 37 and 43, and a 34-year-old woman were arrested by police at The Entrance; a 38-year-old man was taken into custody at a Woongarrah residence; two women, aged 19 and 20, were arrested at a luxury Terrigal hotel; and a 56-year-old woman was captured at Dural.

Search warrants executed on the Woongarrah house and another at Pennant Hills allegedly turned up cash and drug paraphernalia.

All seven alleged offenders have been charged with a raft of drug-related matters.

The 37, 38 and 43-year-old men have been refused bail to appear in Gosford Bail Court this morning, while it’s expected the 56-year-old woman will face Parramatta Bail Court today.

Their three co-accused have been granted conditional bail to appear in court at a later date.
