Farmhand told 'ditch bikies'

1st October 2009

A WARWICK supporter of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club has been ordered to stay away from his local bikie mates after appearing in the Warwick Magistrates Court.

Benjamin Andrew Rasmussen, 28, was also ordered yesterday to undergo drug use counselling after pleading guilty to possession and supply of cannabis.

Described in court as a part-time farmhand, Rasmussen was charged after being intercepted by police on Percy Street on June 14, with a vehicle search uncovering a cylindrical package containing about $900 worth of cannabis.

The court heard Rasmussen had purchased the cannabis for his own use and that of his former de facto and her new partner.

Rasmussen was fined $1000 in April after being found with 83 grams of the illicit drug amphetamine on New Year's Eve 2008.

Magistrate Thacker yesterday ordered Rasmussen to appear back in court on December 1 after undergoing drug counselling.

A separate condition in the meantime prevents him from associating with local Bandidos identities Darrell Cross and his son Matthew Cross.

Smoker fined at 'annual' raid

1st October 2009

A MAN'S appearance in Gympie Magistrates Court on a drug possession charge was the result of an annual raid on his home, the court heard earlier this week.

David Ross Lloyd, 44, said having to front up to court was an ongoing thing for him, because he had been smoking cannabis for 30 years.

“This is an invasion of my privacy - (officers) coming into my home,” he told the court.

“I have a few smokes to calm myself down and that makes me a bad man?

“The Tin Can Bay cops do it every year ... sometimes they find some, sometimes they don't.”

Lloyd said he had tried to give up over the years and when asked why he didn't choose to live in South Australia where the laws on cannabis were more lenient, he said it was still “pretty draconian” in the southern state.

“The reason (officers) come to my house is because I refuse to move,” Lloyd said.

The magistrate told him he would need to find another relaxant to avoid being charged the next time he was raided by police.

“I tried drinking alcohol - it just got me into more trouble,” he replied.

Lloyd, of Glorious Avenue, Cooloola Cove, was ordered to stay out of trouble for the next eight months while on a good behaviour bond.

In another matter before the court, Brendan George Jarvis, 24, was placed on a good behaviour bond for three months for possession of a pipe used for smoking an illegal substance.

The court heard Jarvis caught police officers' attention when he was walking in the middle of the road on September 3, yelling profanities at passing motorists.

He was charged with committing a public nuisance and a search of his belongings uncovered a pipe used in connection with smoking a dangerous drug.

He blamed a few drinks and an argument with his girlfriend for his behaviour, but said he was on the edge of the road, not in the middle.

Jarvis, of Nash Road, Gympie, was fined $100 for committing a public nuisance and for the possession charge he was placed on a good behaviour bond for three months with the condition he attend a one-day drug rehabilitation workshop.

Couple made speed around kids

1st October 2009

USED syringes, hydrochloric acid and marijuana: in most family homes, these would be the last substances you would expect to find lying around.

But, then again, in most family homes you wouldn't expect to find a speed laboratory - like the one police allegedly uncovered in Christopher and Suzanne Evans' Biggenden house last month.

The parents of three young children yesterday appeared in the Maryborough Magistrates Court facing charges of producing and possessing highly addictive and dangerous methylamphetamines.

The court was told that during a raid on August 25 - following a tip-off - police seized 66 items from around the house including laboratory glassware, prohibited chemicals and heating and cooling sources.

Some of the toxic chemicals included caustic soda, hydrochloric acid and pseudoephedrine.

Police allege they also found three boxes of cold and flu tablets, marijuana and a syringe and needle not properly disposed of.

Magistrate John Smith was outraged and said he seriously considered refusing bail.

The only reason he did allow the pair bail, he said, was because there was no one to care for their three children, 2, 10 and 13.

“If you care about three children you wouldn't have this rubbish in your household,” he said. “A kid's life is really precious.”

Prosecutor Michael Quirk told the court evidence against the couple was “extremely strong.”

He said Suzanne Evans allegedly told officers that she produced speed because she was “sick of buying crap stuff because it made her sick”.

The couple will reappear in court next month.

Drugs, stun gun used to 'pick up chicks'

* From: The Daily Telegraph
* Mon Oct 05 00:00:00 EST 2009 Mon Oct 05 00:00:00 EST 2009

EVERY man has their own method for chasing girls _ some are just more extreme than others.

Two men caught in Redfern with heroin, ice, a stun gun disguised as a mobile phone and a set of Japanese martial arts weapons told police they were just out to "pick up chicks'', it was alleged yesterday.

Police pulled over driver Peter Ung and passenger Iden Chan, both 28, on Chalmers St, Redfern, at 12.30am yesterday and found the haul concealed in a plastic bag and a woollen glove.

Police allege the pair have lengthy criminal histories for drug possession and supply.

The search of Ung's car located the plastic bag behind the drivers seat containing the prohibited nunchaku and glass ice pipes while a brown woolen glove located at Chan's feet contained four resealable satchels containing quantities of heroin and ice, along with the stun gun.

Police also found several mobile phones and $360 located in Chan's wallet and a laptop computer.

The men will face several charges when they appear in Central Local Court later this month.

Accused drug trafficker bailed in Vic

16:41 AEST Mon Oct 5 2009

By Melissa Iaria

An accused drug trafficker charged after police raids turned up a stash of uranium has been freed on bail.

Andrew John McNaughton, 46, was arrested in raids across Victoria in April in which police allege they found depleted uranium, cash, chemicals and illicit drugs.

He is charged with more than 20 offences - mainly drug-related - including drug trafficking and manufacturing a large commercial quantity of amphetamines.

On Monday, Magistrate Peter Lauritsen granted McNaughton bail, saying his case constituted exceptional circumstances.

Mr Lauritsen said McNaughton had already been in custody for six months and it was unlikely his trial would occur before 2012.

He also took into account the accused suffered from anxiety, which had worsened while in custody, and he would receive better treatment if he was released.

Mr Lauritsen said with appropriate bail conditions, the risk of McNaughton reoffending would be reduced.

He released him on a $100,000 surety, ordered he obey a 10pm to 5am curfew, not associate with co-accused or witnesses and report daily to police.

McNaughton, of Kangaroo Flat in the Victorian city of Bendigo, will face a committal hearing next year.

During his second bid for bail, the Melbourne Magistrates Court was told of evidence McNaughton supplied chemicals to a clandestine lab for amphetamine production.

One of the charges he faces is conducting a radiation practice without a licence - an offence related to the uranium found during the raids. The charge carries a $180,000 fine.

During the police raid, houses in Preston and Bulla in Melbourne and a storage shed in Harcourt in central Victoria were targeted.

Officer treated after inhaling drug lab fumes

By Kristy Sexton-McGrath

A far north Queensland police officer had to be treated in hospital after inhaling chemical fumes at an illegal drug laboratory.

Police say they found the drug lab at a unit at Manunda in Cairns on Friday afternoon.

It is alleged police found a man crushing cold and flu tablets on entering the unit - as well as other chemicals used to make amphetamines.

Detective Inspector John Hartwell from Cairns police says the drug squad officer had to be treated with oxygen.

"It just highlights the dangers of the clandestine laboratories," he said.

"Even with trained personnel entering an area, the high risk of the chemicals posed to the police who are attending, the people who are actually manufacturing the amphetamine and those in nearby houses and units."

A man and two women have been charged and are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later today.

Monday 05-Oct-2009 (1434 hrs CST)

Detectives from the Katherine Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID) a Federal Government Initiative funded by FAHCSIA to combat substance abuse in remote communities, conducted a joint operation with the Darwin based Drug Enforcement Section Detectives at the weekend.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Adelaide at a caravan park in Howard Springs on Sunday afternoon after he was found in possession of over $50,000 cash and 980 grams of cannabis.

Further enquiries conducted by police this morning resulted in a seizure of an additional fourteen kilograms of cannabis from an industrial premises in Yarrawonga.

Acting Superintendent Clint Sims from the Drug and Organised Crime Division said that he believed that the majority of the haul was destined for remote communities throughout the Top End of the Northern Territory.

“This should serve as a warning to those people involved in the distribution of drugs in remote communities that they will be caught.

“These drugs if sold at street level within remote communities in the Top End would have netted at least $745 000.

“Groups such as this profit from the devastating affects that substance abuse have on our community so it is excellent to see seizures like this resulting from police working together with the community to address the problem head on.”

06 Oct 09 @ 03:44pm by Greg Barila

POLICE dogs helped to sniff out more than 50 people found to be in possession of drugs at the dance music festival Parklife at Botanic Park yesterday.

Two sniffer dogs and police foot patrols were on duty at the noon to 10pm event, which was expected to attact more than 13,000 music fans.

The sniffer dog patrols resulted in 52 people being slapped with a fine for possession of cannabis or classified as ``drug diverted’’ - which involves a counselling session for ``possession of some sort of drug or drug paraphernalia for personal use’’.

A police spokeswoman said fines for the minor possession of cannabis started at $150, plus a $30 victims of crime levy.

The spokeswoman said 10 people were also evicted from the festival, while one person was barred from the event under liquor licencing laws.

Adelaide River blitz nabs a couple of cannabis couriers

October 8th, 2009

TWO alleged drug dealers were caught with a stash of cannabis hidden under the seat of their car when stopped at a Territory road block yesterday.

The men, from Palmerston, were the only people nabbed breaking the law - except for a motorist found driving an unregistered vehicle - during a three-hour blitz on the Stuart Highway at Adelaide River.

Police stopped their car as it travelled south through the town at 10.50am.

Acting officer-in-charge of Adelaide River police station Sergeant Stuart Winter said they had set up the road block to conduct random breath testing.

He said they did not have a tip-off the drugs were being run through the town.

"This was completely random," he said.

Sgt Winter said when they stopped the car the 19-year-old driver appeared to be under the influence of cannabis so they searched the vehicle.

He said 100g of cannabis divided into 100 deal bags was found wrapped in a red environmentally friendly bag and five vacuum-packed bags under the driver seat.

The driver and his 24-year-old passenger were both charged with supplying a dangerous drug and possessing an instrument used for administering a drug.

The driver also faces a charge of driving under the influence of a prohibited drug.

Cannabis bust on Granite Belt

Toni Somes | 8th October 2009

A COMPREHENSIVE set of “how to” instructions helped a Stanthorpe man develop an extensive hydroponic cannabis growing system on a property at The Summit.

But the 38-year-old was busted this week when Stanthorpe police raided his operation, seizing more than 20 cannabis plants and a collection of drug-use equipment.

Stanthorpe Police senior sergeant Mark Ireland said the cannabis ranged in size from young seedlings to metre high plants.

“It is difficult to estimate the value of these plants, but they would have been worth thousands of dollars,” he said.

“This was a joint CIB and police operation and we have charged a person in relation to the raid.”

He said the man would face charges stemming from producing a dangerous drug and possession of a dangerous drug.

“He has also been charged with possession of a very detailed set of instructions on how to set up a hydroponic cannabis system,” Snr Sgt Ireland said.

Police raided the Ridge Road premises at midday on Tuesday after a tip off.

“We executed the warrant and discovered lights, chemicals, scales and other hydroponic equipment in what was obviously a well developed system,” he said.

Caught In a separate incident a 22-year-old Stanthorpe man has been charged with possession of a dangerous drug after being pulled over for a random breath test.

Police pulled over the man on Kerridges Road on Tuesday night and found four grams of cannabis as well as drug paraphernalia.

He will appear in Stanthorpe Magistrate's Court on October 20.

Friend's death turned man to drug dealing, court told

Posted Thu Oct 8, 2009 1:46pm AEDT

Launceston Supreme Court has been told that a northern Tasmanian man became a drug dealer after his friend died in a car accident.

Damien Wesley Marshall, 26, has pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking in amphetamines, after police raids on his Ravenswood home in May and July this year.

The court heard police found cannabis, prescription drugs and amphetamines worth almost $30,000.

Marshall admitted some of the drugs were for personal use, but said he also sold speed for several months.

Defence lawyer Tamara Jago told the court her client was involved in a car crash in December 2008 in which his best friend was killed.

She said the crash gave Marshall nightmares and was the catalyst for his drug use and eventual drug dealing.

He has been remanded in custody for sentencing later this month.
