Raid reveals kitchen drug lab

Monday, September 21, 2009

© The Cairns Post

POLICE busted a working amphetamine lab in a kitchen during a drug raid in a Far Northern home at the weekend.

Officers stormed into the Cardwell residence with a search warrant after an anonymous tip at 1.20am on Saturday.

Three children under the age of five were found at the home during the raid.

When police arrived at the Roma St address, a 21-year-old man allegedly ran out of the house with an exposed syringe in his hand.

Officers chased him down and arrested him after a struggle.

An active amphetamine laboratory was found in the kitchen and three men, a woman and three children were home at the time of the raid.

Officers found glassware and heating appliances that made up components in making the drug.

A crime scene was set up and police said the people were taken away from the house for safety reasons.

The Queensland Police Service’s illicit laboratory investigation squad was called to the house and spent several hours examining the scene on Saturday.

Two Cardwell men, aged 18 and 21, will face the Innisfail Magistrates Court today charged with a number of drug offences.

The 21-year-old was charged with 12 drug related offences including trafficking, supplying and producing a dangerous drug.

He was also charged with obstructing police.

The 18-year-old man was charged with five drug offences including producing and possessing a dangerous drug.

A third man, a 35-year-old from Ingham, was bailed to appear in the Tully Magistrates Court on October 8.

He will face charges of producing a dangerous drug, possession of a dangerous drug and failing to take care of a syringe. The woman found at the house during the raid is yet to be interviewed.

Police said they were putting processes in place to ensure the children were being taken care of.

A MAN who allegedly operated an amphetamine lab in a Cardwell home occupied by three young children yesterday told his mates to look after his daughter as he was led from court in handcuffs.

Garry Desmond Stoekle, 21, faces a string of drug-related charges including trafficking cannabis and producing and possessing amphetamines.

Police stormed a home at the sleepy seaside town of Cardwell, south of Tully, on Saturday and evacuated seven people – three of them children under five years of age – after finding a working drug lab in the kitchen. Three man were arrested and investigations are continuing.

Police have alleged the children were in a lounge room within 3m of the drug lab.

Mr Stoekle and Joshua Robert Rushton, 18, were led into court by police yesterday for brief appearances during which they did not apply for bail.

Mr Stoekle faces 11 drug-related charges. Mr Rushton has been charged with five offences including two counts of producing amphetamines and one of possessing cannabis.

Neither of the men entered pleas and they were both remanded in custody until their next court appearance on October 5.

Friends and family members watched Mr Stoekle being led from court, one yelling out "keep your head up".

He said: "I love you guys ... look after my daughter."

The two men have been in custody since police raided a Roma St home on Saturday afternoon after an anonymous tip-off that drugs were being produced.

Police seized amphetamines and cannabis after evacuating and cordoning off the property because of concerns about toxic fumes.

An Ingham man, 35, has also been arrested and he is due to make his first court appearance on related matters in Tully Magistrates’ Court on October 8.

His charges include producing and possessing a dangerous drug.

Two more in court over Sydney airport drug ring

September 22, 2009
Article from: The Australian

A FURTHER two men have been refused bail over an alleged cocaine importation racket operating out of Sydney Airport, as it emerges some of the accused have links to the Bra Boys surfing group.
Wayne Dennis John Cleveland, 38, from Maroubra, waved and smiled at supporters in the public gallery as he appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday facing drugs charges.

Cleveland is linked to the group based at Sydney's eastern beaches, having appeared in a documentary Bra Boys: Blood Is Thicker Than Water, made in 2007.

He is charged with importing a marketable and commercial quantity of cocaine between 9am (AEST) and 12pm (AEST) on Sunday, through Sydney Airport.

Solicitor Martin Ricci represented Cleveland and co-accused Craig Tira Nicholson, 48, from Bexley, who faces three similar drug importation charges.

Mr Ricci told Magistrate Jane Culver that Nicholson, who did not appear in court, was suffering "a lot of pain from a hip problem'' and asked that he receive urgent medical attention.

Neither man applied for bail and it was formally refused, with the matters adjourned to November 11.

Outside the court Mr Ricci said Cleveland planned to defend the charges.

"The crown case seems to be largely based on telephone intercept and listening device product ... ,'' Mr Ricci told reporters.

"My client is vigorously defending the charges.''

He added that Cleveland was doing okay but it was a "difficult time'' for his family.

Cleveland and Nicholson were among six men arrested on Sunday over the alleged drug importation ring.

Three others - Matthew Robert Hay, 43, and Jose Alquillera, 47, both catering staff at the airport, and Wayne Charles Williams, 55 - faced cocaine importation charges in court on Monday and were each refused bail.

The sixth man is not due to face court until October 27.

The charges follow an 18-month Australian Federal Police and Australian Customs operation which resulted in the raids of six Sydney properties on Sunday, and the alleged seizure of a kilogram of cocaine, worth an estimated street value of $350,000, at Sydney Airport.

Three men will appear in court today charged with a number of drug and driving offences following a vehicle stop in Rozelle yesterday (Tuesday 22 September).

About 1pm, officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad noticed a maroon Ford Falcon sedan displaying South Australian plates heading west on Victoria Road at Rozelle.

AFP report LA link to airport drugs ring
September 23, 2009 - 6:24PM

Federal police have briefed United States authorities after identifying a Californian connection in an alleged cocaine importation racket using Sydney airport.

Six Sydney men have been charged in connection with the drug syndicate, five of whom have been refused bail on charges including importing a marketable quantity of cocaine.

An Australian Federal Police (AFP) source alleged "a de facto couple" in California had links to the importation scheme and that the relevant US authorities had been informed of their suspected involvement.

It is unknown if the pair has been questioned by authorities.

Police documents detailing the allegations against the Australian men show money transfers out of Sydney totalling more than $320,000, made between July and November 2007, to model and actress Brandi Brandt and her de facto husband Rusty Setser, The Daily Telegraph has reported.

Brandt, 40, was once married to Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx and has appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine.

She is believed to have travelled to Sydney in December 2007 on a United Airlines flight.

A customs team searched the aircraft on its arrival in Sydney from Los Angeles on December 2, 2007, and allegedly found 12 blocks of shrink-wrapped cocaine, weighing about 5.7kg, located in a garbage bin inside one of the rear toilets.

The discovery followed correspondence between Sydney-based Wayne Dennis John Cleveland and Setser in October 2007.

Police are alleging Cleveland is the Australian head of the drug syndicate.

"Cleveland is closely associated with the Bra Boys, a well-known surf-crime group based in the eastern suburbs of Sydney," police facts said.

The 38-year-old was refused bail in connection with the matter after facing Sydney's Central Local Court.

Four others - Matthew Robert Hay, 43, and Jose Alquillera, 47, both catering staff at the airport, along with Wayne Charles Williams, 55, and Craig Tira Nicholson, 48 - have each been refused bail by the same court.

Williams, a former airport employee turned garbage truck driver of Mascot, was at the wheel of a council rubbish truck on April 10 this year when it struck and killed a 23-year-old man lying on High Street at Randwick.

He was not charged over the fatal accident.

Williams is expected to apply for bail on October 1.

A 20-year-old man, also with links to the Bra Boys, has been granted bail to face court in connection with the drug importation ring on October 27.

Drug equipment sparks explosion fear
September 23, 2009 - 6:24PM

A Sydney service station was cordoned off amid fears of an explosion after drug-making equipment was found in a passing car occupied by a man with bikie gang links, police say.

Specialist police stopped a car driving along Victoria Road at Rozelle about 1pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

"The vehicle was pulled over into a service station on Victoria Road and a search conducted," police said in a statement.

"That search uncovered a number of items which could be used in the manufacture of prohibited drugs and possibly cause an explosion.

"The area was immediately sealed off as a crime scene ..."

A short time later emergency service personnel specialising in hazardous materials attended the scene and declared it safe.

A 43-year-old Ermington man with alleged links to the Finks bikie gang and two South Australian men, aged 47 and 35, were arrested.

The trio was charged with possessing drug manufacturing equipment, while the 47-year-old was also charged over an outstanding warrant.

A subsequent search of the Sydney man's home allegedly found cash and more drug manufacturing equipment.

Crusty, busty Bra Boys connection

DYLAN WELCH

September 23, 2009

brandibrandt-420x0-420x0.jpg

AN AMERICAN Playboy playmate and a former stunt motorcyclist are the Californian connection in an alleged cocaine syndicate with connections to the Bra Boys surf gang.

As Bra Boy Wayne Dennis John Cleveland, an alleged member of the syndicate, appeared in court yesterday, it was revealed that , a former Playmate and B-grade actor, was also believed to be involved.

Her former boyfriend, Rusty Setser, a member of the Crusty Demons of Dirt, also was swept into the investigation into the importing of at least $2 million worth of cocaine since 2007.

Ms Brandt is understood to have flown to Australia in December 2007 on a United Airlines flight. Police subsequently found 5.7 kilograms of cocaine stashed in a toilet in the 747, though Ms Brandt returned to the US without being charged.

A 22-month investigation by the Australian Federal Police culminated on Sunday with the arrests of six people, including Mr Cleveland and another Bra Boy, 20-year-old big wave surfer Jesse Pollock.

Yesterday Mr Cleveland made a brief appearance in the dock at Central Local Court, supported by four women to whom he smiled and waved. He did not apply for bail and will remain in jail until his next court appearance, due in November.

Ms Brandt, 40, was Playboy's Miss October 1987. Alongside several semi-nude photos, the then 19-year-old mentioned "an empty bank account" among her "turn-offs" and said her ambition was "to be a huge star!!" She also appeared in a later issue. In 1989, she married Nikki Sixx, the drummer for rock band Motley Crue, with whom she had three children, Gunner, Decker and Storm.

She has also acted in several B-grade movies, including Toxic Avenger IV, where her role is listed as "Glamorous Gyno-American".

In a further twist to the celebrity-studded cocaine ring, Rusty Setser is also believed to be involved in the ring.

The hugely popular Crusty Demons of Dirt group is an American extreme motorcycle team that tours the world performing jumps, stunts and bike acrobatics.

Last year Mr Feltser was on television for the wrong reasons, featuring on Channel Seven's Border Security show when cocaine traces were detected on surfboards he was travelling with.

Mr Feltser was filmed acting groggy and drug-affected – he told Customs officers he had taken muscle relaxants when he got off the plane – and had to be taken to hospital when he collapsed.

He was later refused entry into Australia because his visa application contained false information about his criminal history, the show said.

Teen DJ on drugs charges

* By Larissa Cummings

A TEEN DJ has been charged with selling ecstasy to high school students at an "informal" on Sydney's northern beaches.

Thomas Heber, 19, was one of three DJs playing at the unsupervised function, organised by Year 11 students from Pittwater High School, at Manly's Oceanworld on Thursday night.

Undercover police officers will allege they saw Heber, from Avalon, taking money from students in a secluded alcove.

It is understood officers interrupted the transaction and found Heber with 32 ecstasy capsules. A search of his home uncovered another 15 capsules, police claim.

Heber was charged with possessing an illegal drug and supplying an illegal drug to minors. He was granted bail and ordered to attend court at a later date.

The trend of high school students organising "informals" in lieu of supervised end-of-year school formals is causing headaches for police across the city.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

Manly Commander, Supt Dave Darcy, said he had contacted the principals of high schools with "informals" scheduled in coming weeks to warn parents of the under-age drinking and drug use.

"There have been four or five in Manly already this year," he said. "The first couple were very challenging because of the intoxication and suspected drug use."

Supt Darcy is considering resurrecting supervised "blue-light discos", where kids are breath-tested on entry, to fill the gap created by schools' abandonment of year 10 and 11 formals.
