Man nabbed with $42,000 in alleged drug money

Joseph Sapienza

August 28, 2009 - 10:32AM

A man who was allegedly found with $12,000 in suspected drug money on the Mitchell Freeway this week was put under surveillance and nabbed a little more than an hour later with another $30,000, police claim.

About 7.15pm on Monday, officers from the Regional Operations Group spotted a BMW Coupe driving erratically between the lanes heading north on the freeway.

The car was stopped near the Warwick Road off-ramp and after police conducted initial checks, they discovered the man was known to them.

Officers then searched the car, where they allegedly found $12,000 in cash in a bag in the car's boot.

Police spokesman Graham Clifford told Radio 6PR the 27-year-old Leeming man was spoken to at the scene and charged with possessing stolen or unlawfully obtained property.

The man was free to go and he left with only $10 in his wallet.

He was put under surveillance and the same car later made a number of stops at addresses in surrounding suburbs.

About an hour and 15 minutes later, the BMW was stopped in Westminster, and again, police conducted a search of the car.

This time, they claim $10,000 in mixed $50 and $100 notes was found in his wallet, while a little under $20,000 in cash was also found stashed in clothing.

Sergeant Clifford said detectives went about investigating where the 27-year-old had been, and in the following days, they visited a house in Marangaroo and executed a drugs search warrant.

Cash and drugs - including cannabis, methamphetamine and MDMA - were allegedly found at the house, and a 26-year-old man was charged with drug-related offences.

Police suspect the money that was confiscated in these operations was drug-related.

The two men are due to face Joondalup Magistrates Court today.

This follows an unrelated incident at a house in Hislop Road in Attadale in April, where amphetamines were allegedly found as well as $150,000 in cash in the ceiling.

Sergeant Clifford said $34 million in crime proceeds had been seized or frozen by police since January this year.

Updated Fri Aug 28, 2009 1:29pm AEST

A Geraldton man who has pleaded guilty to possessing substances used in the manufacture of illicit drugs, has argued he intended to use them for lawful purposes.

The court heard, in May, detectives found 19 grams of phosphorous and 108 cold and flu tablets stored in plastic bags in the freezer of Ty Suckling, 32.

The two substances are common ingredients in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Suckling was due to be sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to unlawfully possessing a category one or two item and possessing a substance exceeding the prescribed limit.

His lawyer argued Suckling was planning to put the phosphorous down rabbit burrows and that he had stockpiled pseudoephedrine because of a cold.

The trial will resume next week.

A substantial number of criminal and drug offences were detected, including an offender who was arrested for trafficking a drug of dependence. 72 motorists were arrested for traffic offences.

Grandad 'sold smack, weed, coke, speed'

WHEN this diminutive western Sydney grandfather invited you for tea or coffee, it packed more than a caffeine hit, police claim.

For 79-year-old Joseph Mannah (left), those beverages were two of the code words that he allegedly used to discuss the array of illegal drugs he sold to fund his retirement.

The retiree, who would not look out of place at a bowling club, is the state's oldest accused drug dealer.

Mannah faced Parramatta Local Court last week accused of selling "tea'' (heroin), "coffee'' (cannabis), "salt'' (cocaine), "flour'' (amphetamines) and "Colombian bloke'' (cocaine) from the Bossley Park home he shares with one of his two sons.

The quaint code words allegedly used over the phone did not fool police, who arrested Mannah at the South Western Regional Parklands on August 21.

Court documents allege he was conducting an alleged heroin deal with a "known customer'', Karl Boyling, 31.

The drop-off points for other alleged deals included parks, homes and random locations across Greenacre, Padstow and Fairfield, in Sydney's west.

The pensioner, who suffers high blood pressure, was the subject of a three-month investigation in which police used phone taps and decoded his conversations with suppliers, customers and family members.

Police allege that two bags of white powder were found in the footrest of Boyling's car, while Mannah allegedly had $855 in cash.

The retiree was charged with supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, dealing with the proceeds of crime and two counts of supplying a prohibited drug.

A NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research spokeswoman said the only other senior citizens to have police proceedings brought against them for drug offences were a 76-year-old in 2001 and two 67-year-olds in 2007.

When The Sunday Telegraph spoke to Mannah last Wednesday, he said that he was innocent and intended to fight the charges.

"Look at me, I'm (almost) 80-years-old,'' he said.

"I'm not capable of running a drug business.''

Details of police phone taps, released to the court, revealed the extent of Mannah's alleged dealings.

On June 27, he took a call from Neville Malouf - "a known drug-supplier'' - who asked to "meet a Colombian bloke'', police claim.

Another man with drug convictions, Shawn Bell, also called him on July 6 and "asked him `for coffee'''.

Court documents also said that members of Mannah's family threatened to expose his alleged dealings, during intercepted phone arguments.

On July 30, son Joseph Mannah Jr threatened to tell police about his father's "drug activities'' and that they ``could take his house, as it had been paid for in drug money''.

Mr Mannah Jr was also recorded saying his father ``doesn't understand that someone can lose money because he has only ever dealt drugs and you don't lose money that way''.

"You've got a captive audience, with your junkies that keep calling,'' he said.

He later threatened to burn down his father's house. In court last week, police prosecutors asked for Mannah to post $50,000 bail, which was later reduced to $20,000 and paid by his sister. He will return to court in October.

Police raids net cash, drugs

Anne Wright

September 01, 2009 12:00am

POLICE seized more than $68,000 in cash, a loaded handgun and steroids and amphetamines in a series of searches in Melbourne's south-east.
As part of a planned operation, officers from the Moorabbin Regional Response Unit stopped a car travelling along Station St in Carrum about 2.30pm.

In that search the officers found $68,000 in cash and arrested the two occupants of the car, a 28-year-old male and a 25-year-old female who are believed to have lived together.

After searching the pair's Patterson Lakes house, police uncovered a large amount of steroids.

A second car was stopped by police about 15 minutes later, and the male occupants, a 19-year-old and a 23-year-old both from Dandenong addresses, both were found to be carrying a large amount of steroid tablets.

After those searches, four other search warrants were carried out on two Dandenong residences, an Aspendale house and a Mentone panel beating business.

Police seized items from the Mentone panel beating business, where they found a loaded handgun, pen pistol, stun gun and amphetamines.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in relation to those discoveries.

Senior Sergeant Mark Zervaas from Moorabbin Regional Response Unit said the four people charged were part of a wider operation in the south-east area and yesterday's searches would have disrupted their organization.

``The arrests and seizures we hope have interrupted the flow of amphetamines and steroids to Melbourne's south east which is only a good thing as these drugs cause significant harm to the youth,'' he said.

``It's also important to get such weapons as we located, particularly a loaded firearm which is ready for use, out of the wrong hands.''

The Patterson Lakes man was charged with possessing a drug of dependence and proceeds of crime (indictable), while the female was released pending further inquiries.

The Dandenong men were charged with possessing a drug of dependence and the Aspendale man was charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and two counts of possessing a firearm and possessing a prohibited weapon.

All four have been bailed by police to appear at the Moorabbin Magistrates Court on 10 November 2009.
