Saturday, 25 Jul 2009 05:35am

A two-month covert operation targeting drug supply in the Walgett area, in the state’s north-west, has resulted in the arrest of a man and woman.

In late May, detectives from Castlereagh Local Area Command established Strike Force Yuille to investigate the distribution of cannabis, amphetamines and restricted prescription medications.

During the covert investigation police will allege they seized quantities of illicit and restricted drugs.

As a result of their inquiries, investigators executed search warrants simultaneously at two residences in Warrena and Dewhurst Streets about 3.30pm yesterday (Friday 24 July).

A number of substances were located in each of the two homes and seized for forensic examination. Police will also allege they seized drug paraphernalia and ammunition.

A 31-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were arrested and taken to Walgett Police Station where they were questioned by Strike Force detectives.

The woman was subsequently charged with five counts of supply prohibited drug, and one count each of goods in custody, possess prohibited drug and possess ammunition without holding licence.

The man was charged with one count each of ongoing supply of a prohibited drug, knowingly take part in supply of prohibited drug and goods in custody.

They were both refused bail to appear in Walgett Local Court this morning.

Inspector Tony Mureau, Castlereagh LAC Crime Manager, said yesterday’s arrests would impact on the availability of illicit drugs in the area.

“Our investigations are ongoing, but we believe this operation will reduce the availability of illicit and restricted prescription drugs in the area,” Inspector Mureau said.

“The help of the public is important and we urge members of the community to come forward if they have any information about the use, supply or manufacture of illicit substances.”

Police find 1000 ecstasy tablets in kid's bike tyres

July 28, 2009 01:00pm

ONE THOUSAND ecstasy tablets worth $50,000 have been found by police, stashed inside the tyres of a child's bike aboard an interstate truck.

Police intercepted the road train on Great Eastern Highway, Wundowie, in the eastern Hills, at 11.45am on Friday. It had been enroute from Newcastle to Perth.

A check of the truck's cargo revealed a child's bike, enclosed in a box, that had not been declared on the manifest, which included mining equipment and machinery.

Police examined the box and the child's bike and discovered four packets of ecstasy tablets concealed inside the two tyres.

Sergeant Brendon Shanahan, officer-in-charge of Wundowie police station, said police were investigating whether the illegal consignment was part of a bigger drug trafficking syndicate.

``It's quite a sophisticated way of concealing drugs,'' Sgt Shanahan told reporters today.

``Going on the pure quantitiy of ecstasy seized, it would be part of an organised criminal network.''

The WA Organised Crime Squad had been called in to investigate, along with New South Wales Police.

``Information is at hand that the heavy vehicle industry is utilised in the importation of illicit drugs into Western Australia,'' Sgt Shanahan said.

``That being the case, we do turn our attention to heavy vehicles or trucks and their manifest to detect illicit drugs.''

The drivers, a man from Newcastle and and a man from Perth, were arrested and interviewed by police, but were released without charge. Investigations are continuing.

``It would appear . . . that the drugs were put onto the truck without the knowledge of the drivers,'' he said.

Road toll drives truckie to drugs

A TRUCKIE busted with 65 ecstasy pills in the glove box of his prime-mover said he took the drug to de-stress after seeing "a lot of carnage" on the road.

Casey James Richards, 42, was sentenced in Cairns Supreme Court yesterday to one year’s jail wholly suspended for four years after pleading guilty to possessing a dangerous drug.

Richards, who was arrested in Ingham on January 19 last year, had intended to take the pills to "chill out" at home, the court heard.

The court heard he initially told police the pills, containing 4.095g of pure ecstasy and valued at $1100, must have been left there by hitchhikers.

Seized: Police arrested a man after seizing drugs in raids at Bungalow yesterday

POLICE found a "substantial quantity" of drugs at Bungalow yesterday after raiding two homes.

Drug squad officers raided an Aumuller St address acting on a tip off, and were later led to another home nearby.

Far Northern Region Drug Squad Acting Det Sen-Sgt Gary Hunter said police found what was believed to be methamphetamine and cannabis at the homes.

He said sniffer dogs were called to the scene after the initial raid to help police find the illegal substances.

"Assistance was provided by the Australian Customs and Border Protection dog unit," he said.

Cash was also seized by police in the raid.

Sen-Sgt Hunter said he was not in a position to say how much of each drug had been found, but said the quantity was "substantial".

No charges have been laid in relation to the seizure but two men were interviewed by police yesterday.

Sen-Sgt Hunter said police investigations into the drugs and the two men would continue today.

The raid comes a day after police confirmed they found an Uzi gun in another drug raid at White Rock on Monday.

In that raid, police seized about 50g of speed, 300 pills suspected to be ecstasy, about $3000 cash and the Uzi.

It was only the second time a gun of its kind had been found in Queensland.
