Drug den in bedroom, say police

POLICE are questioning a man after an alleged clandestine drug laboratory was uncovered by police in a bedroom of a Rossmoyne house today.

Cannington police swooped on the Passmore St property at 6.25am after a tip-off.

Experts from the Organised Crime Squad, forensics police and the Chemistry Centre of WA were then called in to assess and dismantle the set-up.

PerthNow understands the lab was not active at the time, but officers had serious concerns about volatile chemicals on the site.

The alleged drug lab is the 49th to be uncovered by police so far this year.

A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested by police but remained at this house this afternoon while officers searched the property. No charges have been laid.

Two other men, believed to be the arrested man's flatmates, were taken away by police for questioning.

It is understood the alleged offender had printed drug-making recipes from the internet. The set-up was found in his bedroom.

Today, Detective Senior Constable Alex West, from the Organised Crime Squad, said officers had discovered items consistent with the manufacture of methylamphetamine.

He said police were analysing the items to determine whether illicit drugs had actually been produced.

``We've located several suspicious items, but the inquires are ongoing,'' he said.

``Some of the indications are consistent with the manufacture of methylamphetamine and some of the literature that we've found.

``There's always risks associated with the chemicals, the acids, the flammable hazards, the solvents and some of the more exotic chemicals are toxic.''

Police are also investigating whether the man had been operating as part of a wider drug network.
Det Sen-Constable West said the spike in the number of drug labs uncovered this year could be attributed to more proactive policing and greater community awareness of backyard drug labs.

``The clandestine drug team from organised crime has been a lot more proactive in targeting these things, but also as a result of some education and public awareness, there have been a lot more that have been detected by members of the public,'' he said.

Last year 28 clandestine drug labs were found.

AAP

May 27, 2009 04:09am

SEVEN people will face court today following drug raids across Melbourne.

The arrests of six men and a woman yesterday were the culmination of an eight-month investigation into drug trafficking in the northern suburbs with a large amount of cocaine and other drugs - with a street value of about $1 million - seized as well as cash.

Properties were raided in the CBD and city's north and west.

Fadi Sarkis, 44, of Brunswick faces charges including trafficking a large commercial quantity of cocaine, trafficking a commercial quantity of ecstasy and trafficking a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine.

Fayez Sarkis, 19, also of Brunswick, was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of ecstasy and trafficking cocaine.

Fifty-one-year-old Wayne Doble of Rowville was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of cocaine.

Assad Akkawi, 67, of Brunswick was charged with offences including trafficking cocaine and trafficking methylamphetamine.

Samyr Khoury, 36, and 36-year-old Bill Hussein, both of Yarraville, were charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of cocaine.

Sussane Choppin, 37, of Newport was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of cocaine and possessing the proceeds of crime.

All appeared before an out-of-sessions court and were remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.

A Victorian police officer with more than 20 years' experience has also been charged over his friendship with the alleged members of the drug syndicate.

Purana members were tracking the group when they became aware of the 50-year-old acting senior sergeant's inappropriate connections, the ethical standards department (ESD) said yesterday.

He was not accused of trafficking drugs, ESD Inspector Rick Nugent said.

"It was identified a police member was involved with one or more targets in a Purana investigation," he said yesterday.

"As a result of that investigation, this morning a uniform acting senior sergeant was arrested from a metro police station and has been interviewed over offences of perverting the course of justice, misconduct by a public official and disclosing information."

The officer has been suspended without pay and will appear in court.

Insp Nugent said the officer allegedly passed on confidential information to members of the crime ring but did not disclose the nature of the information.

Drug trafficking pizza shop man jailed
May 27, 2009 - 9:38PM

A Victorian pizza shop operator will spend at least one year in jail for trafficking $37,000 worth of drugs.

Don Ciccio's Pizza and Pasta operator Tony Bazzano was sentenced to two years' jail with a non-parole period of one year at Ballarat Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Bazzano last week pleaded guilty to trafficking amphetamine, trafficking ecstasy, possessing amphetamine, possessing ecstasy, dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime and making threats to kill.

The 45-year-old from Ballarat was arrested on March 13 after a major police operation that included mobile telephone intercepts him buying and selling amphetamines and ecstasy.

During a one-year period, between March last year and March this year, Bazzano sold seven to eight ounces (198 to 226 grams) of amphetamines and ecstasy.

Bazzano on Wednesday stood silently in the dock wearing a dark suit while Magistrate Kay Robertson delivered the sentence.

There was strong support for Bazzano from the gallery including his 20-year-old pregnant fiancee.

Ms Robertson said there was a level of sophistication in Bazzano's offending and codenames were used in dealing the drugs.

She said the drug offences were regarded as serious but the scale of trafficking was not at a high range.

The court heard a number of Don Ciccio's Pizza and Pasta employees had provided references for Bazzano, and the Howitt Street business had offered to re-employ him.

While in custody, Bazzano had used his time productively and completed programs and cleared himself from drug use, the court heard.

"You have a high level of insight into your drug use. This suggests you have good prospects for rehabilitation," Ms Robertson said.

The court heard Bazzano continued to offend after he was found guilty of possessing cannabis in April last year.

The two-year jail sentence also includes threats Bazzano made to kill his fiancee's brother and another woman over a rent dispute earlier this year.

After being sentenced, Bazzano's fiancee had a short conversation with him from the dock and kissed him once.

Bazzano has already served 71 days in custody.

4.7 kilos of pills ... fuk me ..

and another bust 5,000 pills ...

surely all those pills would be pipes ??

I wonder what would happen when they lab test the pills to find they are nothing but pipes and if you would not see much jail time because of that ...

your only charge for actual illegal drug contents , so fillers and binders are not included in total weight.

haha - i'm hoping they were pipes, or duds, cause if they were good beans, then what a fucken bummer!!

i suppose though they will find their way back on the street one way or another. can't imagine them being disposed of in their entirety... ;)

sounds like that second guy who got busted was having himself a right old par-tay. coke, speed, pills, weed and g - good on him. lol
