The D40x is pretty cool. I wish my D40 would do ISO100 like the D40x.

Chrissie I thought you had a Powershot at one time? Canon A630 or something?

I had a Canon S70 but it was either lost or stolen when buzzy went to Utah :(

anyone want to buy a waterproof case and remote for one?

this is my older stuff Canon FT i haven't used in over 5 years

alasdair/SA....that canon series is the best. I had the sd550 and I looooved it. Took excellent pictures everytime! I lost the charger and battery and sold it. I wish I still had that camera though!

I wasn't kidding when I said the Sigma is a monster.

(I need to get out of the house and shoot more. If only it weren't 9 degrees out.)

Heh...some great glass right there. %)

Canon 5D prices have been dropping like a rock awaiting the new version out in the fall. I'd love to shoot with those lenses on that body. I'd imagine they are awesome on the 350D as well.

Are you sure that 28-70 is not a 24-70? I know it's your lens, so... :)

i just have a simple little cannon elf1000.

7.2mp, its simple and easy and i love it.

interestingly my phone also has a badass camera on it.

I think some of the high-end Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones have 5+ megapixels these days.

^ yep, my Samsung phone has a 5MP camera on it.

it's shit though! :D

That's impressive. My LG only has 1.3 mpx.

Ixus 55
Canon 300D w/18-55 EF-S + 50mm EF + 420EX Flash

I'd really like to have enough money to buy lots of lovely lenses.... :(

So I finally had enough of changing lenses all the time and returned the 55-200 VR and picked up the Nikon 18-200 VR.

Yep, those three L lenses and the macro are my favourite peices of glass. I don't have the 24-70mm L and picked up 2nd hand 28-70mm L because it is supposedly a tad sharper. The 100-400mm is second hand copy as well. But after getting the 135mm F2 L, I have to say that the L prime lenses rule! I doubting I will ever buy another zoom lens again.

you guys are inspiring to someone about to take the SLR plunge. any recommendations on good sites to use?

Hey Banquo,
Here are some of the good sites I have bookmarked that I go to for reference and reviews:

http://www.dpreview.com/ (probably the best)
http://www.kenrockwell.com/ (second best, heavily Nikon biased though)
http://www.imaging-resource.com/
http://www.popphoto.com/
http://www.dcresource.com/
http://www.smartratings.com/photography/digital_cameras

I probably sound like a Nikon salesman, but I am very convinced the Nikon D40 is the BEST bang for the buck. Period. You can get the camera body and the 18-55mm kit lens now for $449. That is an outstanding deal on a very user friendly camera and a SHARP lens. The D40x is a couple hundred more, but besides it having 10 megapixels vs. 6 from the D40 - the other differences are minor. (shooting .5 frames per second more, having ISO 100, etc) Those seem small to me and didnt seem worth the money. It's been noted that D40 has much less noise than the D40x too.

Also, if you get a D40/x you need to know about lenses, you cant slap any Nikon or other lens on there and expect it to work. Only Nikon lenses labeled as "AF-S" will auto focus on these. Sigma's equivalent is "HSM". Both of those will also meter too fine.

You run into issues when you put any other glass on the body. I can mount pretty much ANY nikon lens, AF-S, AF, AF-D, AI, AI-S with no problem, if I don't mind manual focusing and manual metering. For some people, this isn't a problem (I'm one of them). What that means is instead of pressing the shutter button half ways and the camera auto focuses, you have to manually adjust the lens into focus. Not a big deal really, there's even a handy "focus indicator" on the lower left of the view finder that comes on when focused.

Gotta run - Let me know if you need any help.

Depends on what your budget is. Canon are soon releasing a new model called the EOS XSi, this will be their entry level digital SLR camera. You can use Canon EF-S and EF mount lenses whilst preserving auto-focus which I very much prefer to have. You will want a decent starting lens, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens is an excellent walkaround lens and quite affordable.

If you are budget minded - Pentax and Sony (IIRC) both offer image stabilization in the body, where as Nikon has it in the lenses. Subsequently, if you go Nikon and want image stabilization you need "VR" (vibration reduction) lenses.
