Movie Reviews Part 3 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

bumped to inform all of you who like watching films about drugs/people taking drugs that you should give a film called jesus' son a go. its intense and edgy (moreso 'edgy') - like the blurb says, but above all it is hilarious. i found myself laughing hysterically at the most inappropriate of circumstances, which is what i couldn't help but love most about this movie.

i honestly dare you not to laugh at a few of the scenes. ie. the bunnies.

^ I've watched that movie but I have no idea what it was about! Perhaps I have blocked it out.

On the weekend I watched 'Miranda and Miranda' on dvd, directed by Woody Allen.

It the story of a woman with a messed up life, told once as a comedy and once as a drama/tradegy. It was definitely an interesting concept, and the movie was good, but I didn't think it was great. Woody Allen wasn't actually in it (which I consider a plus!) but his personality was all over the characters.

Its worth a watch.

Man of the Year

Robin Williams plays a comedian who on the back of major support for a joke he cracks about running for president, goes ahead and runs, then wins the election. Or doesn't win the election, as he finds out when a computer glitch is revealed to him.

Very funny. Very clever.

I'd give it 8/10

Hot Fuzz

Nicholas Angel is the finest cop London has to offer, with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He's so good, he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing - the sleepy and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. Once there, he is partnered with the well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman. The son of amiable Police Chief Frank Butterman, Danny is a huge action movie fan and believes his new big-city partner might just be a real-life "bad boy," and his chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases he so longs for. Angel is quick to dismiss this as childish fantasy and Danny's puppy-like enthusiasm only adds to Angel's growing frustration. However, as a series of grisly accidents rocks the village, Angel is convinced that Sandford is not what it seems and as the intrigue deepens, Danny's dreams of explosive, high-octane, car-chasing, gunfighting, all-out action seem more and more like a reality. It's time for these small-town cops to break out some big-city justice.

...saw it on saturday night, definately worth watching if you liked Shaun of the Dead (not as good though)

I saw Notes on a Scandal yesterday. I didn't know much about it before I went and it wasn't the usual teacher has affair with student story I thought it would be.

Its much more about the teacher's older confidant played by Judi Dench, & their relationship, Judi Dench's character has a rather strange outlook and way of dealing with the world. I don't want to say too much as I'm afraid I'll spoil it.

It was well made, well acted and interesting though I was cringing through a few scenes (this being the director's intention).

Cate Blanchett was luscious, as always, and I think this movie is worth seeing, though would translate fine to dvd if you didn't want to see it at the cinema.

I watched Mysterious Skin today. And i have concluded that it is one of those films that you remain decidedly ambivalent about.

The plot is basically about the way in which two boys, who were both sexually abused at a young age, subsequently deal with their abuse. One turns into a teenage hustler, the other deals with the trauma by believing in delusions about alien abduction.

It is the most confronting film that i have seen in a long time, perhaps ever. Some of the scenes were definitely sickening, and i found myself fast forwarding through a few parts ( i usually make an effort not to do this). Apart me of feels that the whole thing is rather gratuitous. However, perhaps that is unfair given that any visual portrayal of this sort of subject matter is so inherently shocking that we have an automatic tendency to deem it 'unnecessary'. And really, i am sure this was the director's intent - to shock viewers to a certain extent.

As i said, i still cannot figure out if i liked this film. It was definitely disturbing. Parts of it bordered on grotesque, and i really don't think there is anything mysterious about this film. That being said, if you want something interesting, albeit disturbing, to watch, get it out.

I did warn you though :\

I saw Hot Fuzz last night. I liked it a bit more than Shaun of the Dead but that is probably only 'cause I've seen Shaun of the Dead heaps and can't remember what the first time was like.

Great movie. Very funny. And the last 30 minutes or so are so much fun to watch.

I saw this on the weekend too. Not at the cinema but it was still tops.
I agree that the last bit is very good. Very intense - they just go nuts! The two main characters are awesome. But I did like Shaun of the Dead better.

Watched many other movies last weekend.
Out of:
The Illusionist (8/10)
Pan's Labyrinth (9.5/10
Blood Diamond (7/10)
Children of Men and (6/10
Hot Fuzz, (8/10)
Pans Labyrinth was the best. Fantastic bittersweet ending. Great characters.
The Illusionist was very good too, despite the ending being quite easily guessed. Still love Ed Norton :)

Shortbus

This is a film about an eclectic group of characters negotiating their sexual and emotional lives in New York. Much of the movies centres around an underground venue, called Shortbus, in which pretty much anything goes.

It's quite graphic in parts. If you're put off by the thought of watching a guy try to give himself a blow job, then this probably isn't your type of film.

But aside from that, this is one of the most funny and touching films I've seen in a long time. The characterisations are great and the way they've approached the subject matter is just really well done.

Awesome soundtrack too.

Yeah Shortbus is really good. I saw it at the movies. It was done really well in that its not like watching a porno despite the massive amount of cock, box and tits. I didn't at any point find myself viewing the movie as porn. As Kat said, its not for an uptight audience considering one of the opening scenes is a guy giving himself head and blowing in his own mouth.

Saw Mystery Skin a long time ago too and agree with Mr Candyslut its a very confronting and disturbing movie. I consider it to be a really good movie but not neccessarily something I enjoy watching. Like its not an enjoyable movie experience as such but you do get something out of it.

Recently saw Mysic & Lyrics. Yeah I know, total cheese but pretty enjoyable light entertainment to watch. I walked out of the movie smiling and feeling good.

300 was quite good, very graphic and violent but still I thought it was a pretty good movie. Some great lines and interesting effects.

hired The Wrong Man and quite enjoyed that, it tied up pretty well and was entertaining.

We LOVE shortbus :D You'll never think of a National Anthem the same way ever again :p

You just haven't heard a national anthem til you've had it sung into your ass.

^^ lol

To celebrate Friday the 13th.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the beginning

love how they incorporated the dinner scene into this one, as the first.
My stomache still ain't sittin right

twas excellent =D

I just finished watching The Chumscrubber. I'd never heard of it before but saw it and video shop and thought it sounded familiar. Its basically about a guy who finds his best friend who is also his schools drug dealer dead, having hanged himself in his room. Another group of kids decide they wanna get their hands on the dead dealers stash and go about it by some pretty weird means. Its basically a story about drugs, depression, appearances, dysfunctional families and how it all ties in together. Its not fast paced at all and is sometimes teadiously slow yet still had me right into it. Its very deadpan in this way. I thought it was a pretty good movie, some very moving parts at the end and throughout the story. Definately not the standard drug movie as its not really about drugs but yeah about the people. Kind of a tough one to explain but yeah definately hire it and watch it. Best way I guess to explain it is that it has a strong Donnie Darko feel about it but is by no means a clone. Kinda Donnie Darko meets Desperate Housewives.

re: city of men. i was suitably drunk when i watched it the other week but i remember thinking that the cinemeatography is AMAZING. as in, basically you could pause the movie at any given moment and the image that you'd see on screen could be a really cool stand alone photograph too.

cinematography that good is both daunting and awe inspiring to me at the same time.

i also liked the ending, and the point in time when a certain character died but i won't say who or when cos i don't want to ruin it for people who might still want to watch it.

i'd probably give it 7.5 or 8 stars. worth a watch in my not so drunken anymore opinion ;)

i watched shortbus last week. i wasn't expecting more than indie type flick about relationships with some faggotry mixed in, and i was completely right. still good though plus the soundtrack was great, however i wouldn't watch it again.

unfortunately, i broke that rule when my gf got home and pressured me to watch it again (i was on my PC and the HDTV is right next to me).

seeing someone ejaculate into their own mouth at 1920x1080 resolution = priceless :(

saw 3

SAW lll : piece of shit. way too predictable and boring. looks like a half arsed, nasty attempt to cash in on the success of the `1st two. not that they were brilliant either, but at least it was fresh then. mildly entertaining, there was still some squirm factor from the poorly simulated gore. it may have been worth watching if real ppl actually died, but since it isnt, dont bother unless u have a coupon and have seen everything else.
