Placidyl (Ethchlorvynol). Green Meanies, Pickles, whatever you want to call them, there's no denying that Ethchlorvynol was a strong med. Now, being too young to have tried Placidyl myself, and given the fact that it was pulled off the market by Abbott in 1999, and in generic form by Banner Pharmacaps, it's not going to be easy to track down.

So, I'm asking some of the people that were fortunate enough to be able to live in a time where Placidyl was both easy to get, and sought after. I want to get some more info on this delicious looking (well not literally delicious, to my understanding it had a strong vinyl/benzene-like taste) Great Sedative of the Seventies. Also to my understanding, is that the thing about Placidyl, was that it had a knee-buckling rush once the outer capsule dissolved. I would't mind a few 750 mg greenies, hell even the 500 mg red Placidyls would be nice, hell even the 100-200 mg spherical 'kickers' would be good. I like the idea of a ridiculously strong downer with a rush. Don't those capsules just look so tempting....

this sounds soooo good
i would love to have that. THat would def. go good with this methadone, and hydro's and a xanax.
But i barely itch. I can't grab that itch much anymore. TOLERence is a bitch

If that's the case, it might be that depressants with an ethynyl group give the fast onset type of 'rush'. My experience is with 1-ethynylcyclohexanol - closely related to the medicinal drug Ethanimate (1-ethynylcyclohexanyl carbamate) - which in oral doses between 500-1000mg could knock everyone I know off their feet. The degree of muscle relaxation & intoxication which about 600mg could provide was easily a match for methaqualone; it's only drawback was the menthol/camphor like taste that it left in the mouth and imparted to the breath. Even on top of large doses of amphetamine it would leave us as giggling, unco-ordinated messes!

I'd imagine that the free alcohols of the carbamate drugs used clinically (ethanimate, meprobamate etc) would be interesting & similar to ethchlorvynol

Placidyl's fast onset could possibly be attributed to it's high solubility in fat (but then again a compound must be fat soluble in order for it to pass the blood-brain barrier). Unfortunately this is also where its toxicity stems from. What I mean is, if someone overdoses on Placidyl, the dose will be absorbed by their fat. Once the fat is metabolized, the ethchlorvynol is re-absorbed, meaning that it's bloody difficult to treat a Placidyl overdose.

Here's two diagrams comparing the structures of Placidyl (1-chloro-3-ethyl-pent-1-en-4-yn-3-ol) [Middle-Right and Rightmost images] with 1 Chlorhexanol [Leftmost image] and Ethinamate [Middle-Left image]. Not having an organic chemistry background, I can only say I notice similarities between the Ethinamate (Valmid) and 1-Chlorhexanol structures. Anyone have any suggestions regarding similar modes of action and rapidity being based on chemical structure?

^ Should do, but I bet it tasted really hideous. After looking at its structure again, I bet it's even slightly flammable

I wonder if Placidyl was better than Qualuude??

In my vague memories no. Qualuudes seemed to be a bit more joyful, I felt high on them. Placidyls made me feel more like a drunken zombie.

I had a script from 83-'1992

I had a really cool Country Doc in Jonesborough TN. He used to write me those green 750's,and I'd alternate to Carbrital {also known as Blue Ringers} once in a while. They would blow you into zoo-zoo land. Man, it was impossible to eat 2 unless you don't mind sleeping for a couple days. We'd stick a safety pin in them and that's the worst tasting stuff you can IMAGINE. I'd TASTE IT FOR 2-3 DAYS! I preferred the quaalude buzz cause the comedown wasn't so awful. Roofies ain't got shit on Placidyls.I've seen people pass out within 30-45 minutes for several hrs. The Blue ringers were pentobarbital, same thing as Nembutal. I burned several Pizzas thinking I could stay up for 20 minutes TO EAT SOME PIZZA! My doc finally retired and the next one put me on Halcion, that's another story! Later

I do remember taking a BI 62 also known as Preludin and taking a Placidyl which was a nice buzz that I didn't crash on! The good ol' days! LoL

which moderator was asking which member to share tales of "drug porn" with us? links? I remember reading the first installment, of a cocaine or crack dealer's biography.

wasnt the now dead Supreme court judge Rienquist (spelling, i know) addicted to this shit for years? I dont know, that name really rings a bell. I know he was hardcore addicted to something of this nature...and a few times it definately got in his way while on the job...fucking supreme court judge nodding out. lmao.

america.

^ Hey, there was a doctor who was cheif medical advisor to Maggie Thatcher (turns to spit on mentioning her name!) that was a serious heroin addict all the years he was in that position, so don't go thinking the US has a monopoly on hypocrits!

Rehnquist had a habit of his own: Placidyl.

My personal experiences with these side effects happened quite often,I can't belieive I had a script at 21 years old now that I really think about it! I just missed Parest which my doc would write due to them being taken off the market. On several occasions after taking Placidyl 750's I remember the following day drifting into the wildest vivid dreams and saying some off the wall shit that would have people around me in tears!I guess I'd slip into REM for just a few seconds, but a few seconds of REM seems like an hour! I turned a girlfriend onto one and remember her screaming"pass the fucking butter!!" while she was passed out. I woke her up and she thought she was at the dinner table eating corn-on-the-cob!!! I guess I probably went through withdrawals at times, but I didn't realize it because those words weren't spoken in those days. Jonesing for weed would put everyone on edge, but we never knew what WD's were and didn't realize that these drugs were addictive. This is a quote from the article below I found through Google...
- [after his Placidyl was cut off, Rehnquist began ''hearing things and seeing things that other people did not hear and see.'' ]

Chief Justice Rehnquist's Drug Habit
So, it turns out that while thousands of people languish in our jails for abusing prescription drugs, the late Chief Justice Rehnquist had a habit of his own: Placidyl. I thought they stopped making the drug when they stopped making Quaaludes - they were very similar. I never knew anyone who took it for pain, only to party. Guess I was wrong.

And for the nine years between 1972 and the end of 1981, William Rehnquist consumed great quantities of the potent sedative-hypnotic Placidyl. So great was Rehnquist's Placidyl habit, dependency, or addiction?depending on how you regard long-term drug use?that by the last quarter of 1981 he began slurring his speech in public, became tongue-tied while pronouncing long words, and sometimes had trouble finishing his thoughts.

....The standard dose for adults is 500 milligrams, taken at bedtime. Rehnquist initially took 200 milligrams daily but by 1981 was taking 1,500 milligrams a day.

But he sat on the bench, and affirmed drug sentence after drug sentence. Nice. Here's more on Rehnquist's Placidyl dependency:

According to a Jan. 4, 1982, New York Times account, Rehnquist sought help with the drug in December 1981 because it no longer relieved his pain. He entered George Washington University Hospital on Dec. 27. According to the physician spokesman for the hospital he suffered "disturbances in mental clarity, characterized by distorted perceptions," as doctors weaned him off the drug. The spokesman added that after his Placidyl was cut off, Rehnquist began ''hearing things and seeing things that other people did not hear and see.'' The doctors took his dose back up before re-weaning him. By mid-January, Rehnquist returned to the bench.

....When Rehnquist's drug problem became an issue during the 1986 confirmation hearings, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, defended Rehnquist in a Post story, saying he got into trouble with Placidyl because he was "a very compliant patient" who "followed the advice" of his doctors. Ah, yes, one of the most brilliant jurists of his time was the victim of his rotten doctors for almost a decade.

I asked Rachamim to share his stories because he'd mentioned that he wanted to previously.
