Acne Mega Thread

Does getting acne have anything to do with your diet or is it only hormones. Or a combination?

Have heard every potential explanation. Honest answer is it depends I guess. Generally dermatologists seem to think "no" but honestly who knows.

The only real cure for acne for most people seems to be isotretinoin though which is probably the last thing I'd advise anybody to take unless acne is destroying their lives to the point of no return.

EDIT: Isotretinoin is Accutane. It generally works. It also has been linked to extremely chronic gastrointestinal issues in some people like Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.

99.99% of the acne cures advertised don't work at least in my experience. Haven't had bad acne, just a spot here or there, in years mainly just do to clever symptom management and I guess less hormones but at one point I was on the verge of using Accutane after all else failed including a variety of antibiotic regiments.

See a dermatologist if you are serious about getting acne treated. It's the only guaranteed way you might see some results. Salicylic acid never worked for me, neither did benzoyl peroxide, and those are the two main scientifically valid conventional treatments in effect. I wouldn't try homeopathic bullshit to be honest, might cause more harm than good.

I had body acne pretty badly as well as face acne for my entire adolescence into my early twenties. My diet was pretty much complete shit and I was drinking/drugging constantly. I didn't know much about health back then and went on accutane. I pretty much cleared up my body acne completely and permanently. It didn't do much for my face however. Thankfully I didn't get any of the other fucked up side effects.
Acne is at least 75% internal. Topical solutions only help with out breaks once they've occurred. If you want to stop them from occurring in the first place you have to treat the problem systemically. Primarily heavy foods cause acne imo.

If you have acne, try a vegetable juice fast and coffee enemas for one week. It will cost a bit as you will have to buy a juicer (a cheep one runs for about $100) and a load of FRESH ORGANIC GREENS and fruit. Make your juices have lots of green leaves like kale, collard greens, chard, parsley and cilantro. Add apple if you can't take the bitter taste. Have this and water be the only thing that goes into your body for a few days to a week (or longer depending on how you feel).

I have friends who are normal weight and have done 30+ day juice fasts with no negative side effects so don't worry about starving or not having enough nutrients...you'll be fine :)

Many people have cured cancer, diabetes, a host of neurological issues, and skin problems with juice fasts. I really think it could work for you.

peace, love and light

How much weight is there to this?

Enough for lawsuits, and at least a few people have won their lawsuits. Check out the wiki for accutane. It's sparse on the Crohn's section, but has links to other good resources.

How much weight is there to this?

There have been lawsuits on it. But before that even there were a lot of allegations within the community that tried to link them. Not saying if you use Accutane you will definitely get problems, but I mean the medicine is considered dangerous enough where you need to register for a program to even get it in the United States (iPledge) complete with a huge warning packet you need to read for all the other possible dangerous side effects that could accompany you.

Reminds of me what I head a year or so back from some people I knew who used finasteride which was used for treating androgen alopecia and before that benign prostatic hyperplasia. There have been lots and lots of people complaining the drug caused impotence or sexual deficiency in a lot of people but doctors were adamant those cases were the minority. Flash forward to only a few months back and it made pretty big health news that new studies show it can cause impotence and ED even if discontinued, which is far from the reversible claims of Merck.

Wikipedia lists a plethora of links to sources linking isotretinoin with permanent problems and lawsuits have been one in a number of cases. That alone scared me away from ever using that unless I absolutely needed to. So I'm just here letting people know that if they are considering it and their dermatologist is pushing it, to think long and hard about it and evaluate the risks and rewards. Because many a dermatologist and doctor are not only ignorant of some studies or experiences, but can be apathetic to them. Trust me, I've come across such people that don't always adequately inform you of possible risks.

I'm not a doctor and I'd advise people to discuss the use of isotretinoin with their doctor, but do certainly look into it a lot yourself, it's an serious medical choice imho, the gravity of which is not appreciated by everyone.

Indian Lilac is also better for acne problem. Many researchers found it helpful to overcome pimples and acne problem. Leaves of indian lilac are more useful. Thanks

^im not a doctor either, but i am a patient

who is tried to suffer this bullshit
they(doubtfully the actual manufacturers) know what is in this stuff, so few people will react a certain way, its almost predictable. IDK, its just so strange all these new and/or very rare autoimmune disorders are popping up now with these new 'miracle drugs' -
with new extremely expensive even more devastating 'miracle drugs' to treat those no less.

what i came to post was - i want to add to the list of those who got results, once they stopped using soap to wash their face.

I'm gonna repost a post I made in the other thread and tweak it a bit for you:

  • Buy Apple Cider Vinegar and wash face twice daily with it. (I apply it with cotton pad all over, neat and leave it on but you may dilute it if your skin is sensitive - I personally get the best effects from straight application though)
  • Consume half a lemon's worth of juice spread out over many glasses of water a day (8 minimum).
  • Apply lemon juice and tea tree oil directly onto spots.
  • Never wash your face with hot water. I always use cold. You may use extremely tepid water.
  • Apply Zinc Oxide to your face.
  • Wash your face with Epsom Salts.
  • Steam your face 3 times a week.
  • Consume 5 cups of redbush tea a day.
  • Clean up your diet, eating plenty of fruit and veg and nuts (full of Vit E, for example which is essential for healthy skin), cutting out sugar and processed crap and drinking plenty of water.
  • Consume Milk Thistle, Dandelion (root and leaf) and Nettle tea frequently. Flushes the liver, which is essential for skin care. Work from the inside out, first and foremost.

If you actually follow all of these points (which really isn't hard btw), you will DEFINITELY see an improvement. If you are serious about it, you will follow this. (If you feel any of it is damaging and your skin is too sensitive, then tweak it, but I personally feel perfectly fine doing it all). Come back here, after following all these points for a month and tell me you haven't seen results.
They are ALL significant, but if I had to pick the most important ones, it would end up being a clean diet, (the skin is after all the 3rd kidney, some say - releasing toxins from the crap we eat) vinegar facewash, lemon juice consumption and lemon/tea tree application. But do it ALL.

^ Good luck! Let us know how it works out, for ya ;)

I never had bad acne or anything until I started using opiates (now, an addict). I also now am addicted to and use adderall/or coke daily (90% of days) - my face AND legs (odd, eh??) are not looking nice. It's horribly embarrassing. Last year I quit my high paying job due to the extreme anxiety and humiliation I felt (when in reality, I don't think anyone cared at all - only me :|) because of the way I looked. I had/have to wear pants every single day -- seriously HORRENDOUS looking wounds on my skin - folliculitis most dermatologists say, but ... my ass. This is ridiculous. The 'pimples' on my face are different than anything I've had in the past. They are 'wider' and seem to contain many pores WITHIN the 'main pore'. There almost appears to be a black/dark blue hole/strings deeeep inside each one (they -- in legs, not face -- are SUPER deep, scar horribly, and are so painful it hurts to walk. Yes, I pick the crap out of those).

In sum - drug use seems to have provoked this. Also, the time I got this shitty skin correlates DIRECTLY with when my 5 year relationship ended (for good). This was extraordinarily hard on me, and still is. Since then (this was almost 2 years ago) my stress level has been at maximum and somehow each day is worse than the last --skin not improving. I've tried the sun, tanning : these 'work' in the sense that skin can become less oily and the redness in a pimple can appear lessened.

I have been prescribed retinol (Retin-A Brand name) for my 'acne' -- which I refuse to call my skin condition. This works but dries the crap out of my face, so I don't use it often. I really try not to touch my face, as opiates make me scratch a lot and just make me generally touch my face/skin more often. Marijuana (strangely - anyone else?) makes me itchy ** makes the feeling I get when I itch feel SO f'ing good ** as well. So, smoking less would be beneficial.

Cigarettes can provoke acne as well.

I was prescribed low estrogen birth control for my complexion (and regulating my period, off topic... so that's that). This worked ten years ago before drug use began. Now? Doesn't do shit.

I'd advise limiting to CUTTING drug use, eating well *clean foods* and participating in a generally healthy lifestyle. (easy, huh!? haha)

Stress is a VERY important factor in the condition and quality of your skin.

woamotive, i'm sorry to hear of your plight. Back when I was a heavy drug user and heavy drinker, my skin was pretty bad. Giving up both those things helped me no end (I still smoke Cannabis and take Kratom but they're not drugs, they're plants maaaaaaan, they are natural so they must be good for me, maaan)...

First and foremost, i'm sorry to state what you already know, but you NEED to stop or cut down the drugs if you want to sort this out. I would say you must stop the adderal/coke first and foremost. Stimulants imo are worse for the skin, especially ones like Coke where there are inevitably adulterants which again, help the matter not one bit. Cut down and stop the cigs - tobacco is quite a big player in inducing the odd spot for me.
Try and stop stressing about this - I know it's hard, and the more you see it, the worse you feel which only perpetuates the vicious cycle, but admittedly I did actually have pretty bad skin at one point and never thought I would get to where I am today. It will get better. You just need to give it time, get over the factors causing it and start on the road to recovery. I would say that this begins with addressing your stress/drugs. Meditation is your friend. By relaxing and meditation daily, you will reduce your stress levels considerably, which in turn will hinder the amount of cortisol flying around your system. Spots and skin conditions can not only be exacerbated by, but often are solely caused by hormonal issues, whether it's excessive testosterone or over-shot adrenals or any fluctuation in what should be steady hormonal output.

I managed to get my skin nearly as flawless as when I was 5 years old again, and this is down to the MAGIC FORMULA which can be YOURS...YES YOURS FOR ONLY $19.99!!!! THAT'S RIGHT!!!! ONLY $19.99! Just wire the cash direct to my bank account for flawless skin!

What the hell, have it for free. I'm feeling frivolous:

Apple Cider Vinegar facewash (I am using Spirit Vinegar atm ,which helps and works but ACV is the way to go hunny)
Clean diet! So important. Cleanse your skin from within.
Lots of water and tonnes of redbush tea (makes a big difference)
Lemon and Tea tree applied to each spot (very effective)
Steaming my face frequently, after which I wash the sweat off with freezing cold water instantly, then apply vinegar on cotton pads around the face, finalised with a dab of lemon juice and tea tree directly unto any spot which may be there on it's way. I've managed to prevent EVERY potential spot with this method, which in turn has cleaned my face radically. I used to have stubborn ones around my chin and mouth and the T-Zone, but not any more thanks to this formula. Do this tonight and tell me your skin don't feel no better brother.
Stop touching your face and fer chrissakes, stop picking your spots.
Stop washing your face with warm water. Never let water that is warmer than cool go near your face, in my opinion. Some people claim lukewarm is the way forward, but water that is even remotely hot just strips my skin of it's natural and cleansing oils. Believe it or not, my skin often looks it's best when I don't bother washing it at all...and that's because the skin does a grand job of cleansing itself anyway and provided your diet is clean, there will be fuck all toxins escaping through your skin, to put it very simply indeed. Cold water is absolutely the best thing to wash with.
Quit using any chemical-based facewashes if you do.

This is just the beginning. I can almost promise you that if you follow every bit of advice I said (washing regimen, cessation of drug use, nutritional advice, ie. redbush and clean diet based on fruit, vegetables, nuts as a foundation) then your skin will become noticeably clearer - however, the advice I gave is really intended for acne sufferer's and I know you don't believe your skin's condition is of the acne vulgaris variety, though I do believe it could make some different regardless of that fact and hell, it really can't hurt to treat your skin well anyway with this regime, regardless of whether it rids your "spots". It could be that you need antibiotics aswell...

But please follow this advice, because i'm sure it can help, if only slightly. Every single piece of advice.

It's a shame that you quit your job for those reasons...I too understand the pain of being self-conscious. I've always been self-conscious, which most people I know don't believe or understand and that's the worst part, that you know there is truly nothing to be self-conscious about yet you still are. Just low self-esteem due to repressed mental issues, I presume. Which we inevitably try to not only escape from through drugs, but recapture the carefree, frivolous mindset of our vibrant youth.

All the best.

@attempt4- Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough reply! I must start off by saying -I made the switch to All Natural skin products, detergent... etc., over a year ago. I have a great cleansing (etc) routine that my sister (a skin care specialist at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin--ie.,she knows her shit). I do not use stripping hot water.

You're right. I'm well aware of what I need to do to 'clear things up' ;-) :
Stop touching my face and picking at my skin in general.
Relax, stress reduction.
SLEEP increase.
Taper down and probably quit using amphets/cigs/weed ... and eventually the Mother-opiates.

These are things everyone in 'like' circumstances should consider.

Acne... pimples... skin issues - they're f'ing annoying, are they not?General unhappiness (hormones... Lessened care for one's appearance, can also (seemingly) = pimple increase/acne. Yez?

They are fucking annoying indeed. Depression or general unhappiness can definitely be linked to acne.

You really need to stop the drugs though man. Again, I would say amphets and tobacco should be the first to go, and alcohol if you drink. Alcohol is atrocious for your skin for many reasons that I don't need to/can't be fucked to go into right now.
I used to stay up for days on end with stimulants and that wreaked havoc on my skin - so you are right about sleeping more.

That's pretty handy your sister is a skincare specialist!

Have you ever tried Apple Cider Vinegar, Zinc Oxide, Magnesium Sulphate, Lemon and Tea Tree? Regardless of how good your routine is, I would be intrigued to see how much of a difference, if at all, it would make. I know it from personal experience and experience of friends with severe acne to work better than any pre-made product.
I am NOT negating the knowledge of a professional skincare specialist at all by the way. Merely putting forth plentiful ideas with anecdotal evidence backing them up since you seem to be quite desperate for a solution and i'd like to help as much as I can!
I'm not saying replace your regimen either.

All the best. This will get better in time. As soon as you start implementing the necessary changes you need to do, this will get better. STOP THE STIMS BRO.

So idk if im just psyching myself out but i think the Accutane is already working!
my face isnt breaking out nearly as bad, cant wait to see how it looks in a month!
self confidence is like already getting better im so happy :D

only downside is i get the worst fucking stomach ache for about 2 hours after i take it.
i think its like an inflammitory thing cause my upper stomach (right under my ribs) gets sorta bulked up and i cant exert myself (cardio) without it hurting like a bitch.

I've had acne since the age of 10 or so (I'm 19 now). It's only moderate, but still. When it's so constant it might as well be severe. I can't even remember what it's like to be comfortable in my own skin these days. I've tried just about every product and natural remedy under the sun and nothing has ever gotten rid of it substantially and for good. Most attempts alleviated my acne a bit but just made my skin worse in other ways. At this point the only thing left to do is fully come to terms with having bad skin, and hopefully I'll magically grow out of it some day.

However, dietary changes have helped the most. A gluten and dairy free diet is THE absolute most important thing for my skin, especially gluten. I have a few other things that I do to help (vitamin D supplementation, stress-free lifestyle, washing with only water and keeping skin as chemical free as possible), but none of that is nearly as important as avoiding gluten and dairy for me. If you're dealing with acne, make sure you don't have a gluten sensitivity because if you do that stuff is fucking poison to your body and could be causing you A LOT of problems that you wouldn't normally associate with something like that. Excess sugar and processed vegetable oils (NOT stuff like olive and coconut oil) are problems for me as well.

Don't touch. Don't pick. That'll make things worse and that is the best advice I can give you. You cold compresses to reduce the swelling of some, hot compresses to bring others to a head. But just don't touch or try not to at least.

when i was younger i had pretty bad acne, nothing worked for it. i tried just about everything, rx and otc alike. i found that the older i got it just gradually started to get better. one thing that worked for me when i got older was witch hazel. its not very strong at all so it cleans but its easy on your skin. diet change will help too, start eating a lot of fruit. red seedless grapes are good becausew there is something in the skin that helps your skin

Thanks for all the help so far, guys. Much appreciated. There are SO MANY suggestions, however, that it's almost a bit overwhelming! I'll just have to do some experiments. I'll report back with results. :)
