Not sure if you know what it means to be a Bug Chaser, but it refers to someone (usually a gay man) who deliberately goes out looking for someone who is HIV positive to have intercourse with and have the person ejaculate inside the person and spread the virus to them.

:(

This is something that definitely is not new, but it is becoming a bigger problem every year as more and more people are doing this type of behavior. Over the last 2-3 years I have definitely seen a big increase of people online looking to be infected.

I don't understand how someone can want to actually become POZ, and think that is a good thing. I just don't understand why!

It is even common for these people to throw a "bug party" where they go online and invite people who are HIV poz, then next invite the chasers who are negative and want to become poz. Then basically they have a orgy where everyone has intercourse with everyone else, so you are almost for sure goin to become infected.

I understand the fantasy of people wanting to have intercourse bareback (without condom). But not purposely wanting that person to be HIV positive and share his "gift" with you.

<sigh>
This makes me sad, when we live in a world where HIV is a big problem and kills people everyday.

I have tried to have conversations with people who do this type of practice online, to try find out what they really see in it, but I don't get very far.

What does everyone thing about the highly dangerous trend?

article from rollingstone mag.

from advocite mag

From the first article:

If I know that he's negative and I'm fucking him, it sort of gets me off. I'm murdering him in a sense, killing him slowly, and that's sort of, as sick as it sounds, exciting to me.

um, yeah...thats totally sick.

I agree that this is really awful. It's like the freebase version of a deathwish.

I have never known anyone who has done this (as far as I am aware), but I understand that since HIV is no longer seen as an automatic death sentence that some people actually *want* to get it because then they can do as much barebacking as they want.

Of course, that logic is flawed since there are several different strains of HIV and someone who has it can catch another... possibly worse strain.

I urge anyone who considers bug chasing or gift giving to consider the fact that they are engaging in behavior that helps spread a global epidemic. :(

Thanks for bringing this up for discussion. Awareness is necessary to discourage anyone who might consider this to think twice...

I read an article about this ages ago, I think it might have also been in SLR, not sure though.

I think it's disturbing. And sad. There are all kinds of fetishes and perversions out there but this may well be one of the most disturbing things I've heard of. I wonder what goes on in a person's head when they do this? It can't really be a suicidal thing because it takes years before you get sick usually. What if you changed your mind afterwards, and realised that HIV wasn't such a cool thing after all?

It just creeps me out, but I'm sure the 'bug chasers' are just another product of a fucked-up world.

*shudders*

Wasn't there some sort of controversy regarding the RollingStone article?

I remember when the story first came out, like you said, it was quite awhile ago. I am surprised to hear that this has continued on and is actually getting worse. I will read the 2nd article shortly.

^^I believe I read it in SLR too.

When I was still live in Orange County/Los Angeles area I worked with this dude (guy 1) who has done quite a lot of porn (and actually is quite known worldwide for his porn) over the past 5 years (no longer does it thankfully)! Being that he (guys 1) is well known for the movies he was in, he would get quite a lot of action, and was notorious for being a slut. Well, a couple years he started barebacking (outside of porn) and ended up being POZ. Till this day he denies he is, but my best friend (guy 2) also use to do porn videos. Guy 1 was going to do a video with the same company my friend (guy 2) worked with, and the company made guy 1 get STD tested before. And my friend ended up getting a hold of the paper work on file which stated he was infect POZ. (btw the company never did hire him because he was POZ)
Well, guy 1 would use his porn history for going on chats online and hooking up with guys, and would talk the majority of the people into barebacking with him telling them he was negative.
I have talked to a few people on gay.com chat who have had sex with him, and a few have told me they were now POZ and have never done bareback before other then with guy 1. So now they are POZ without ever wanting to be, because of a stupid mistake they made, and one guys lies.

Its shit like that, that happens quite more often then the "bug parties." Usually one guy gets off on the idea of infecting others. And does all he can to make the intercourse condom free if he can, saying nonstop lies about his past and whatever works.

Yes it did create a lot of controversey within the gay community.

I tried looking stuff up on gay.com (america's #1 gay news, chat, personal themed site) which really had nothing about the subject. But if you log into gay.com chats there is many themed chat rooms with hundreds of people in them talking about this stuff, getting off on it, sharing stories and fantasies. :(

This is terrible - it's as if a number of psychotic, mentally impaired, inhumane people of the world have got together to catch STI's so they can in-turn pay out on people they hold a grudge against. Possibly their own supposed loved ones...:(

That probably is worse than the 'bug chasing'. It makes me really, really sick to my stomach to know that there are people out there who will willingly destroy other peoples' lives like this. :X I hope all people who do this drown in their own vomit and die.

Never heard of this. How strange.

it is a very hush hush type of deal.

expectually dealin with it in the gay. Community, as a whole. They already have a biased against them that society thinks gay men are whores and spread STDs so sites like gay.com and planetout rarely report on these type of things in fear of it hurting the community even more.

^^That makes sense. I read an interview once with a herion addict that was knowning spreading HIV through shared needles. Very cruel.

^^ Kind of - It's mutually accepted that they share the Hep C virus though. It's a matter of 'where do you draw the line?'

Now that I think of this, isn't knowingly infecting people with HIV illegal? I'm pretty sure it is in Sweden- I remember reading a story in a magazine about "the AIDS-man", some guy here who had infected several women with HIV even though he knew he was positive, and I think he went to prison for it...

Yes but if they've never been to a doctor to get tested (even if they know they've been with someone who's HIV positive), they can say they didn't know they had it. Then for the victim it's a case of too bad, so sad!

What no one's mentioned yet is how much this costs taxpayers and insurance companies. I don't know much about the drugs used for treating HIV, but one thing I know is they are expensive.

do people see this as the ultimate taboo and get off on it because of that? i can't think of anything more extreme you could do sexually.

i just dont understand why that is a turnon....

it may be a bit of a buzz for the 15 minutes its going on for, but would they wake up the next morning and go 'what teh fuck did i do???"

people have the right to kill themselves, no matter how slowly it goes...
