Punk Fuckin Rock

Good music certainly is good music. But I happen to like the sub genre "punk" as it is known a little bit more than the rest. Although sometimes old jazz and early rocksteady/dub wins me over. REGARDLESS! I understand many people feel like it's a word that's been used in overkill and many people simply don't like punk rock. I do though. And that's why I posted this thread. And sure, alkaline trio is punk rock music. They're poppy punk rock. Just like rock and roll has it's subdivisions, punk rock does too. It's no big whoop! And I'm glad the discussions started. I grew up on punk rock and it holds a place in my heart forever as the music that got me away from all the people trying to ruin my life (for the first part of it anyway).

I like lots of the bands that you listed toad420. Especially the descendents and propagandhi. I'm glad that bands like that are playing such an important roll in the underground right now as far as influencing voters.

Punk Rock music and culture helped shape my life and values as a person. Unfortunately, like most people that were into punk rock culture as well as the music, I became jaded eventually as the redundancy of conversation, song themes, and scene life appeared; my aggrivation grew. What were your experiences with punk rock?

Amen brotha!

lol........shit......anyone manage to find at least 25% of the bands on that list!!???

not for shit!!

but if so, im very VERY impressed and would liek to hang out with you!!!!

Yeah yeah, Strung Out are fuckin cool, saw them live with Frenzal Rhomb.

But for my money you can't go past The Clash. Angry, political and damn fine musicians.

I LOVE punk music but am a bit of a snob within the genre as I don't like my punk sounding too polished. love fear, minor threat (any of ian mckayes bands really) am really into new york squat stuff (choking victim/leftover crack, indk, morning glory, sixgun radio, two man advantage) and most things as long as they're fucking fast :D

I like music that is both pleasing to the ears and technically impressive, I have yet to hear ONE punk band that is impressive in terms of musicianship...

There are plenty of punk bands out there who are/were great musicians.

Have you ever listened to a Dead Kennedys cd?

There is an Australian band called H-block 101 who are fucking great musicians as well...

Try listening to a Bad Religion cd. Greg Graffin has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard inside or outside of a punk rock band. He actually has a solo album in which he plays all the instruments (piano, drums etc.). I'm sure if you gave it a try you would find it technically impressive and pleasing to the ears.

I think you are generalising a genre you have not delved deeply enough into to be an unbiased critic.

Basically if you don't like punk, there is something wrong with you. I don't know how people *can't* not like punk music......There's so many types and variations to chose from. You've got the old-skool stuff, vibrators, ruts, Clash, Stiff little fingers etc. then the oi! stuff, Sham 69, then the new wave 80's stuff, the street punk GBH, The Blitz, The Exploited etc, then the hardcore stuff, the Dead Kennedys, Minor threat etc. Then theres the modern stuff, NOFX, Vandals, Rancid, Distillers, etc etc.....So much to chose from, how can you not like any of it???? So much energy, so much individuality, so much power and in some cases (jello biafra) plain genius!

*end of mini-rant*

I can't like punk cause its no talent shit music all about the image of being "punk". They cant sing, they only play powerchords, all the songs sound the same, PUNK IS UTTER FUCKING GARBAGE!!!! OI!! OI!!!

end rant

I'm definitely into punk rock more than any other genre of music.

I just saw the Suicide Machines last Friday here in Cleveland, was up on stage jumping off quite a bit. :) Luckily they played like 1/2 of their set taken from "Destruction by Definition" which is the only album of theirs I ever owned and ever really listend to.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of
Bad Religion (quickly becoming one of my favorites)
Misfits
U.S. Bombs
Rancid
NOFX (one of the coolest bands ever)
Angry Samoans (not many people seem to have heard of them)
Fugazi
Minor Threat
Casualties
AFI (only "Shut your mouth and open your eyes" songs)
Screeching Weasel (never get sick of this band for some reason)
Blanks 77
Against All Authority (when will these guys release something new??!!)

Hey, i think it's completely unacceptable that people into dj's and all that bollicks (not real music, it's just noise) constantly come here and start slagging everyone off whenever people start threads about punk music....

You don't see punk/rock-fans constantly slagging off the people in electronic music........ha, maybe we should. Taste of there own medicine.

^ Yeah I love it how people who listen to music made by hitting a few buttons on a computer and sampling other peoples art think they can bag out punk bands for being talentless.

My question is this, have you ever tried picking up an instrument?

My challenge is this, pick up a bass guitar and try playing the bass solo from Rancid's Maxwell Murder.

And to totally screw up the thread with a large post here are some humorous TISM lyrics.

The Australian Guitar Hero Makes His Last Stand

In a tiny inner city pub the amps were being stacked;
Leads were getting wound up; it was full of pissed ANZACS;
"Got no more gigs for Tuesday nights," said the barman to the Star,
"We're putting pokies in the lounge, and strippers in the bar."

The Star, he raised his finger and said, "Fuck this fucking hole!"
But to his faithful roadie he said, "It's the death of rock and roll.
There ain't a single place that's left to play amplified guitar -
Every place is serving long blacks or has become a Tapas bar."

His dirty denim jacket was gaffered and turning black;
Hair was missing on his forehead, but it reached right down his back.
"I don't blame that barman bastard," he told his roadie - "Hey, fuck no:
I blame all those faggot wankers who are playing this techno.

`Brothers can work it out' - get fucked. That can kiss my rotting arse.
Work out what happened to real music is what I'd like to ask.
Everything is all machine, run with MIDI and A-DAT;
But all they do is go ping ping ping, like a truck that's backing back.

Who the fuck are the Chemical Brothers, that they now call the shots?
Goldie is the name of a light beer, Elastica holds up socks."
The roadie sat there silent next to the ejaculating Star.
"What the fucking point of drum 'n' bass if no one can play guitar?"

"And have you seen those fucking clubbers with their peroxided dreads,
Dressed up in fucking Adidas like fucking fucked fuck heads?
I wouldn't drop a tab of E if you fucking paid me man -
I've got the guts for L.S.D; and the only jungle I know was 'Nam."

His roadie sat, still silent, but then he finally began to speak:
"Actually, Star, I maybe should have told you this last week,
But I've scored a job as D.J. at the latest techno club.
I'm sick of working with a loser. See ya later, bub."

Well, the roadie owned the p.a. and the roadie owned the ute
And the roadie told Star to get right out or he'd bash one up his chute.
And there on that cold freeway Star walked along alone -
Of course, he been kicked out half way between emergency telephones.

"Fuck youse all," said Star aloud in the emergency stopping lane,
"To quote from the chick Juliet, Hey, what's in a name?
A good song's just a good song, just the same as long ago;
But dress it up in something new, and suddenly you're Picasso,

Every white balled Pommy cunt thinks that you are so hip -
Read N.M.E. from ten years ago, and there's all the same dickslip;
Prodigy are just the band who are getting it this year -
Rolling Stone's got no more cred than fucking New Idea."

Star's anguished voice rose in grief as he cried unto the moon:
"In the end, when all is said, a tune's just a fucking tune."
Star played his amp far too loud - his hearing was sort of gone,
So he never heard the grinding squeal as the truckie put the brakes on.

Twenty six of that road train's wheels played a tune upon his head.
"He just wandered into the traffic," the distraught diver said.
The cops had seen it all before; the ambo's washed the freeway clean -
There's no contest when you put a man up against a machine.

No one said Bad Brains yet. pay to cum (the roar sessions) is a seminal album, and 24 years later still sounds furious as hell, Black Flag Damaged is on my list, Agnostic Front united blood and victim in pain, Minor threat still owns. I think alot of new "punk" sucks but I love a lot of the newer hardcore bands. Terrors' latest album (forget the name right now), Cheech keep your pimp hand strong, and madballs' N.Y.H.C E.P are all the shit, and blow any so called "punk" bands these days off the face.

^ There is a newish hardcore/punk band now called Only Crime which consists of some old school punks. The lead singer is Russ from Good Riddance. Havn't bought the album yet but the few songs available on their website were good. If you havn't heard of them yet check 'em out - Only Crime .

best drummer = josh freese (the vandals/a perfect circle)
best bassist = matt freeman (rancid)

Hey not everyone does im a dj and a bass player and i still post about how much i love punk in this thread!!

You people suck for getting this far on this thread with no mention of Menace. Among a bunch of other bands.

And the best DC band ever was Iron Cross. OK, it was probably Minor Threat, but a half a dozen people have mentioned it. In other news, I have NO IDEA where my tape of US of Oi! is. BEST COMPILATION EVER. I can't even find a track listing of it on the Intraweb. Standin' strong, bred to hate.

I saw one mention of ALL, but no one said anything about The Decendents. They were awesome in my book. Used to really like Gorilla Biscuits too. Also the Bouncing Souls are pretty cool.

I can play any punk song on a guitar you can name its such simple music. You say electronic music has no talent in it? I'd like to see you even try and figure out the equipment artist like Squarepusher, Autechre, and Venetian Snares who was even in a punk band himself before he saw the light. Sampling is for shit DJs playing in basement clubs fuckin house garbage and whatnot, I'll even admit its dancy faggy garbage. While there may be a few good punk artists most of em are too worried about image and that minimalistically loud and obnoxious three power chord fake british accent garbage to be taken seriously. Love the mow-hawks tho.....

As an advocate of punkrock, allow me to say I never have said that "talent" is necessary for good music. 10 times out of 10 I'd rather listen to a good song than a talented musician jerking off in public. I mean, I'm sure I could name some incontrovertibly talented punkrock musicians, but why?

Incidentally, how come whenever someone wants to prove electronic music requires talent, they point to the most tuneless, random garbage imaginable? Maybe when it was a new concept, making music without a discernible beat and without melody, harmony, etc, etc, was a big deal, but who wants to listen to that crap anymore? And, oh yeah, Squarepusher, Autechre and Venetian Snares all use samplers A LOT.

Oh yeah, I hate the fake British accents, too. I'm looking at YOU, SF Bay Punk faggarios.

Anyway, if you want to listen to talented musicians, have fun with your Yngwie Malmsteen wankfests. I'd rather listen to something that's fun to listen to.
