Four tonnes of drugs seized in CIS
November 15, 2003 - 10:05AM

Over four tonnes of drugs have been seized and some 1,000 people arrested in a vast joint operation carried out by six former Soviet republics, the chief of a regional security organisation told Interfax.

A large amount of weapons and ammunition were also seized during Operation Kanal, which was carried out on November 4-10 and involved around 30,000 law enforcement officers, Nikolai Bordyuzha said.

Bordyuzha is the general secretary of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, which unites former Soviet republics Russia, Tajikistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.

The Collective Security Treaty Organisation is a sub-group of the 13-member Commonwealth of Independent states (CIS), an organisation loosely uniting all former Soviet republics, minus the three Baltic states.

The drugs seized came from Afghanistan, Armenia and Belarus, Bordyuzha said, without elaborating on the nature of the narcotics.

Afghanistan is easily the world's biggest producer of opium, from which heroin is produced, with 77 per cent of world output.

United Nations figures say that this year's opium harvest will yield 4,000 tonnes of opium from which 400 tonnes of heroin will be produced and the amount of land devoted to poppy cultivation has risen by eight per cent compared with last year.

A large part of Afghanistan's heroin production is smuggled through Central Asia to Russia and Western Europe.

400 tonnes of heroin
8o

I thought the USA would have done their best to destroy Afghanistan's opium producing capacity... Oh well!

Well apollo, it seems the Taliban actually regulated and limited opium production so after the yanks left it became a free for all :\
