Prison officer bailed on drug charges
September 12, 2003 - 1:02PM

A prison officer accused of selling drugs in Melbourne nightclubs has been granted $50,000 bail.

Martin Warry, 26, formerly of Sunbury, allegedly sold ecstasy and amphetamines over the past nine months.

Warry, a former Fitzroy Football Club player, faces nine counts including trafficking ecstasy and amphetamines.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court was today told Warry sold ecstasy pills for $30 to $40 each and could sell up to 60 of them in a night.

His lawyer Justin Hanneberry said custody would be more difficult for his client who had worked as a prison officer for the past five years.

But Detective Senior Constable Peter Sims, of the Police Prison Squad, told the hearing Warry had threatened witnesses in the case and police feared he would abscond on bail.

Magistrate Maurice Gurvich granted bail on conditions Warry surrender his passport, put up a $50,000 surety, report to police daily and live with his mother at an undisclosed address.

Warry will be freed after his lawyers produce his passport, currently missing, or provide proof it has been cancelled.

Warry's de facto partner Kara Boyd, 27, who is also a prison guard and had shared his Sunbury home, has already been bailed on charges of trafficking and possessing ecstasy and amphetamines.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Wayne Taylor told the court today the Office of Public Prosecutions was taking over the prosecution of the case from police and would seek a trial in the county court.

Warry is due to appear next Monday for a filing hearing in the same court.

60 pills a night is pretty small, but he is a cop so i guess it's got a story.

He's gonna get a really hard time in jail if he does go. But i bet he wont.
