Spirited Away

Spirited Away hit the theatres today.

For a movie that did not see wide release in North America, winning Best Animated Picture is truly a huge feat.

It deserved to win. I have a bootleg DVD of it, and it is hands down one of the finest pieces of work I have ever seen. So much imagination in two hours it was nearly overload.

See it in the theatre. You won't regret it. A movie this big needs to be seen on the big screen.

You can probably see it at your local theatre.

Also in a few weeks it will be out on DVD.

I saw this a few months back when it hit the theaters the first time. Of course, since Disney owns the distribution rights to Miyazaki's works, and they don't want competition with their own films, there was ZERO advertisements for it. I sat through it the first time, and told my friends "You go on home, I need to watch this again." They eventually dragged me out, but it didn't stop me from seeing it a few more times. I downloaded the subtitled version from the 'Net, and you can bet I'm going to be buying it on DVD when it comes out.

It's back!

If you missed it the first time, you lucked out. Seeing it on the big screen is quite an experience. Can't wait to go again.

DVD release April 15 I believe.

I liked it alot - although not moreso than Mononoke Hime. It reminded me alot of Alice and Wonderland ;)

I saw it. It was great, very creative. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that for a while it seemed to be leading to no where. (The plot) but other than that it was awesome.

If you liked this, check out his previous work, Princess Monoke. Its quite a bit better, with the same surrealistic style, but with more of a plot.

Work, singular? Hayao Miyazake has been constantly creating genuine works of art with Studio Ghibli. Mononoke Hime and Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi are rather late-comers to the genius of the man. Some of his earlier works are rather geared towards children on a more obvious level, but they almost all work brilliantly on many levels. It's impossible to discount Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind; Laputa: Castle in the Sky; Castle of Cagliostro; My Neighbor Totoro; Kiki's Delivery Service; and Porco Rosso. Not to mention Studio Ghibli's INCREDIBLY wrenching film Grave of the Fireflies. So yes, look at his MANY works if you liked this.

Grave of the Fireflies

Thanks, Baron.

I saw this film on Teletoon years ago, when they showed feature-length Anime films at midnight.

It was an incrediblly moving experience - I'd never seen animation like it.

I wrote down the title, and didn't follow up on it before losing the piece of paper - and forgetting the name of the film. I can't tell you how many times I wished I could remember it.

Thankfully, a local store has a copy of the collectors edition of "Grave of the Fireflies" DVD in stock, and it's on hold for me.

This film is so magical. It not only engages your imagination but pushes it to a whole new level. The little girl's character was absolutely adorable and endearing.

This is definetly one of my favourite films ever. I'm going to watch princess mononoke tonite :D

I cannot highly recommend this enough, or any Studio Ghibli film for that matter.

See it. whether you're an anime fan or not :)

So I watched Princess Mononoke last night. It's a really good flim. A nice fairy tale kind of story.

I liked Spirited Away better though

Just been re released

Disney (finally) has given SPIRITED AWAY a wide release. Do yourself a favor & see it in a theatre. I was lucky enough to see both PRINCESS MONONOKE & SPIRITED AWAY on the big screen & let me tell you there is a BIG difference between big & samll screen for these 2 films. These 2 films, like 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY lose a lot of their power when viewed on a small screen--Roger Ebert once said that seeing 2001 in a theatre is like being at the Grand Canyon; seeing it on a small screen is like looking at a postcard of the Grand Canyon. The same applies to SPIRITED AWAY & PRINCESS MONONOKE.

me too.

they are both great films and a simple comparison does them a disservice but it's hard not to.

It is perhaps the greatest anime I've seen. It's no wonder why it became the highest-grossing film in Japan.

I preferred Mononoke Hime...i think maybe I excpected too much from Spirited Away before going into the theatre to see it, with all the great (but most definitely justified) reviews.

Spirited Away

I only recently discovered this movie and now I'm telling everyone that it is my All time favorite movie (animated or not). The animation is Stunning, it is like my dream fairy tale came alive. Music is beyond anything I've heard in other movies.

oh yeah and the rat and the little bird things are THE CUTEST THINGS I HAVE EVER SEEN. When I simply look at the rat I start smiling. Amazing...

The second time I watched it I was having an insanely strong anxiety/panic attack and this movie literally pulled me out, now its like a talisman to me. Say I'm weird.

Yeah this is a good movie, I liked it alot. it reminded me a whole lot of Alice in Wonderland, actually.

The mouse and fly, i always thought kicked alotta ass too. and what about that street lamp? that thing was cool as hell too! and the spider guy! and the frog! and the...well, that's just what kinda movie it was i guess, so many tripped out, fantastic, amazing things and character designs, was definitely a treat to see, although I have to admit that if we're going to compare at all, I'd have to say I liked Princess Mononoke alot better, which was made by the same people I believe.

Mononoke is also Miyuzaki (sp?) studio Ghibli movie.. I liked it a lot, but the ending frustrated me so much that I started to dislike it. The evil bitch ( the one with rifles and all) should have died, that is killed and torn to pieces... I had an immense feeling of being betrayed and tricked in the end.. The funny thing is that I can't even explain to myself why exactly I felt so upset...

But yeah, all his flicks are Amazing and all I was saying that for some reason Spirited Away just touched something in me and I can't let go.
