Drug strategy is 'working'

The Federal Government has claimed a victory for its drugs strategy, with a report showing law enforcement had unprecedented success last year in seizing drug shipments and shutting down illegal laboratories.

The Australian Illicit Drug Report 2001-02, released yesterday, shows the availability of heroin on Australia's streets has continued to fall at rates not seen in other countries.

But addicts appear to be "doctor shopping" - faking chronic illness - to get prescription drugs as a substitute.

Grant Wardlaw, director of criminal intelligence for the Australian Crime Commission, which compiled the report, attributed the success to the right balance of law enforcement and treatment. "Australia does seem to be a unique case," he said.

Greater co-operation with authorities in southern and South-East Asia in the past few years had helped produce several record-breaking busts that punched a hole in the drug trade in 2001-02, Dr Wardlaw said.

"Obviously, it's better for Australia if we can destroy the drugs at the source, and that's a particular part of the Government's strategy," Dr Wardlaw said. "But obviously, we need more treatment resources in Australia as well, to soak up those people who want to change or who are forced by heroin shortages and other shortages to move into treatment."

Addicts are moving on to other drugs, including Panadeine Forte, pethidine and morphine. More than one in four heroin users reported using legal opiates, up from one in five in 2000-01.

Well, I don't see any dent in the research chemical market. In fact I suspect we will see a great deal of new types of chemicals in the near future. With some new interesting compounds comming on to the grey market and then on to the street.

Ciao....

Yay!

Now we've won the War on Drugs we can concentrate on the War on Terror and the War on Jealousy.

like Joker said they havnt mentioned meth or ecstasy, which would both be increasing by a massive % each year i would think. they mention heroin which arguably isnt the policing dropping the availability its possibly due to the problems Afghanistan has faced the last few years.

Or it arguably is considering the trend is Australia is not the same as the trend in the rest of the world.
Well done the AFP et al for targetting big movers and shakers rather than chasing down the destitute junkie and throwing them to the loving arms of the criminal justice system.
