Escape From Tomorrow

BY ALL reasonable standards, Escape From Tomorrow shouldn't exist.

Filmed in the shadows at two theme parks - without permission - this is one smart, scary and daring flick.

Written and directed by first-timer Randy Moore, Escape From Tomorrow represents an example of what some film industry insiders call "guerilla filmmaking".

On location at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California, without obtaining any filming rights from the Disney Company, Moore and his rebellious cast and crew shot snippets of what would become a dark, noir Sundance hit.

The film is ostensibly a family trip to Disneyland gone wrong.

According to the film's synopsis, and indeed a very promising trailer, we can expect: "paranoid visions, bizarre encounters, and an obsessive pursuit of a pair of sexy teenage Parisians", Mother Jones reports.

Moore admits he's worried about Disney's response to this screw-the-man approach to filmmaking. There's a possibility it will never see the light of day, despite receiving some amazing critical claim already.

"Constantly in the back of my head there are legal things, like, 'What could happen if I say this or that?'" Moore said, according to Mother Jones.

The film does come with a front-loaded disclaimer: "The following motion picture has not been approved for all audiences by the Walt Disney Company."

Well, that should do it.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited? We are. Especially after seeing this promotional poster.

^ that looks fantastic. has anybody seen it?

I mean I don't believe that they did this behind Disney's back. Disney would be all over anyone that tried to capitalize on them without their permission.
the only thing an aggressive legal response from disney would do is give this movie free marketing, the value of which would be well in excess of anything the creators could achieve themselves. they'd be smart to just ignore it.

i don't think inaction from disney is a comment on the veracity of the film-making.

That's not the only thing it would do. They'd also have to "cease and desist" from showing the movie, and they wouldn't be able to cash in on the publicity.

The stronger argument is that Disney World leaves it alone because it too gets free publicity from the movie. And I guess they can use the publicity. The novelty of DW wore off long ago.

But of course, the free publicity for DW would also be a reason for DW to secretly co-opt the movie's production.

Watching that trailer--it just feels astroturfy.

I'm also not sure what the difference between ceasing and desisting is. Can I cease without desisting?

in this context, ceasing is stopping. desisting is not starting again.

I watched this on a streaming website the other day, and I found it average. I thought it could have been done alot better. Not scary at all and pretty boring I thought. Even though it was done without permission (apparently) and in b+w (and probably on on a low budget) I just found it pretty lame. 5/10 if that. The plot was shit and could have been done so much better by someone else, although I liked the idea of it all, I didnt really enjoy it, I wasnt hanging to keep watching or anything, just nothing I'd really recommend.
