An argument over a man's cocaine addiction turned deadly at the couple’s home north of Weslaco about 7 p.m. Friday, Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
Investigators, however, would not find out about it until Sunday morning, when they discovered the two bodies.
The 24-year-old Weslaco employee allegedly beat, choked and stabbed his common-law wife of six years at least 22 times and then raped and killed her younger sister, who walked in on his wife’s murder, Treviño said.
Justice of the Peace Homer Jasso denied Garza a bond at his arraignment at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Monday, where he faced one count of capital murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping.
“He’s not going anywhere,” Jasso said, despite the $500,000 bond he issued Garza for allegedly kidnapping a neighbor, a first-degree felony.
During the court proceedings, Jasso told Garza he not only killed two women, but also made his three children orphans.
Garza’s three girls — a 6-year-old, 5-year-old and 6-month-old — were at the home in the 6100 block of Pueblo Del Sol Street when he and his wife began fighting over his cocaine addiction, Treviño said.
Garza was a heavy user and every time he snorted cocaine, his nose would bleed.
On Friday evening, he apparently bled all over his home and upset his wife, Veronica Serrano Rivera, who eventually threw a full beer can at his head.
The incident angered Garza, who was allegedly under the influence of cocaine, and triggered the two homicides, Treviño said.
Garza first beat and choked his wife in the washer room, leaving her unconscious, and then attacked his 12-year-old sister-in-law Elisa Rivera. The younger victim routinely stayed at the couple’s home every weekend to help her sister with her daily chores, investigators said.
While he was attacking his sister-in-law in the restroom, his wife regained consciousness, Treviño said. So Garza picked up a knife and stabbed her to death. Then, the 220-pound man went back to the sister-in-law, who also lay unconscious, raped her and stabbed her, as well.
Garza spent some time trying to figure out how to flee the crime scene, Treviño said. He drove by several gas stations and Walmarts looking for a car to steal. Garza eventually decided his best option was to go to his neighbor Andrea Tafolla’s house, where he forced her out at knifepoint and showed her the two bodies inside his home.
The 24-year-old kidnapped Tafolla and took her vehicle for several hours Sunday morning, Treviño said. He drove her by several ATMs and forced her to withdraw hundreds of dollars in cash.
Meanwhile, Garza’s two older children, who remained at the home, found a way out and began walking along the road. A passer-by saw the young girls and asked what they were doing. The children replied they were walking to their grandmother’s home because their mother and aunt were dead.
Investigators have yet to figure out how the children knew about the two deaths, Treviño said. They might’ve seen the bodies, their father may have told them or they might have heard the ordeal, Treviño said.
....
The passer-by called the Sheriff’ Office and a deputy found the two bodies still intact at the home, Treviño said.
Tafolla, the kidnapped neighbor, eventually managed to escape from Garza’s vehicle while they were stopped at Rudy’s Country Store and Barbeque.
Tafolla called authorities, while Garza fled the area.
A member of the Gulf Coast Violent Crimes Task Force spotted Garza hours later at a ... McDonald’s.
Once there, Garza dove into a sewage pond, where he tried drowning himself three or four times, Treviño said.
Weslaco firefighters, U.S. marshals, Weslaco police and deputies responded to the suicide attempt and prevented Garza from drowning. They used a ladder and hooks to pull him out of the pond.
Emergency personnel transported the combative man to a McAllen hospital, where he was treated for ingesting the dirty waters, Treviño said. Garza remained on suicide watch at the county jail Monday afternoon.
He refused to call anyone when he was booked there, records indicated.
Garza had two previous arrests for possessing small amounts of cocaine, but officers had never received calls regarding domestic abuse, Treviño said.
