Drinking will kill 210,000 in next 20 years unless we outlaw cheap booze, senior doctors warn

  • Next two decades there see 70,000 avoidable deaths from liver disease
  • Another 140,000 from drink-related strokes, heart attacks, cancer, violence, suicides and accidents
  • Figures show alcohol-related injuries and illness cost the NHS £2.7 billion a year

Alcohol will cause 210,000 deaths during the next 20 years through illness, violence and accidents, senior doctors warn.

Two of Britain’s foremost alcohol specialists, Professor Ian Gilmore and Dr Nick Sheron, are calling on the Government to act quickly to avert this ‘shameful, preventable loss of life’ by outlawing cheap alcohol.

They have calculated that in the next two decades there will be 70,000 avoidable deaths from liver disease and another 140,000 from drink-related strokes, heart attacks, cancer, violence, suicides and accidents.

First they came for the acid,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a hippy.

Then they came for the ecstasy,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a raver.

Then they came for the nicotine,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a smoker.

Then they came for alcohol
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Well so long as they don't touch cheap booze in America. If they did maybe we could convince the right wingers not to vote for it by claiming it is part of the socialist plot to take over the country.

^Yep.

Its only cheap alcohol that kills you guys. Expensive alcohol is totally safe.

Let's make sure we understand the distinction between these two alcohols.

It's like the two morphines. The heroin on the streets with rape you kids, while the one they use in hospitals will ease your pain.

Yeah people only die from cheap booze not Bacardi 151 that costs a fucking fortune! And it's not like you can make nearly pure alcohol in the comfort of your own home now is it? 8)

The daily fail comes through again.

the answer is obvious: legalize cannabis and a health crisis is averted. Tons of people still gonna get fucked up 24-7, but bodies won't be stacking up like they will with booze.

Well legalizing cannabis won't stop people from being alcoholics though i have to admit that cannabis did cut down on my alcohol consumption quite abit. This was probably die to the anti-anxiety effects i got from cannabis.

Jacking up the prices of alcohol more often then not turns out to be fucking disastrous. Here where i live people would just bring pure alcohol in (along with tobacco) from a certain French island off the coast of Canada and some of these jerks would then cut it to 100 proof or so either with water or if they didn't care if people lived or died cut it even farther and put some other alcohol in it. This led to some people ending up being poisoned with tainted alcohol. Also many people just made their own and since it's perfectly legal to make beer, wine, cider or anything that isn't distilled liquor as long as you don't sell it then there was nothing anyone could do about it. I remember that it only cost me maybe a total of $10 to make a few buckets of wine which is one fuck of a deal considering even the cheapest shit that you normally wouldn't use as boot polish let alone drink runs atleast $7 a bottle.

People will always find a way around the fence :\

Ouch! Here you can get 750mL, wine for $2.17 (including tax) at trader joe's, in various varietals (which are surprisingly palatable). Which works out to be more alcohol than 200mL vodka (costs $2.17 at corner store).

Lol banning alcohol won't stop anything . We've tried that already back in the days of prohibition .

Maybe we should legalize something that will cause 0 deaths in the next 20years . Its called cannabis people . And its awesome !
and like the poster above said . Legalizing weed will probably cut alcohol related deaths ..

Lol what a bunch of dipshits. We've tried this before with alcohol and it didn't work. We're currently trying it with all other recreational drugs, and that isn't working either.
