what is a head shop?

I dont mean to sound naive, but i have read about "head shops" in other forums. i'd like to know whether this is an american/european term or, even better, do we have these head shops (or equivalent) in australia?

Head refers to the slang at the time for a counterculture person from the 60's and 70's. Not sure if it refers to being a "pothead" but it was certainly associated with this culture.
Head stores are basically smoking paraphenalia stores, similar to bong stores we have in Australia.

more so than smoking paraphernalia, head shops are places were u can buy tripped out, crazy, psychedelic or other similar products which fuck with your head. they boomed around the late 60's when acid was at its peak.

Here is a good one on the corner of Nieuwe Hoogstraat and Kloveniersburgwal...I'm afraid the Dutch ones have no equal in Australia
