The shicking truth about drug education
I really hope this line of thinking doesn't filter down to aussie shores. Honestly some people are so fucken stupid. Since when has telling a child, 'no, you can't do that' ever been an effective method of preventing them from doing something you don't agree with.
When it comes to drugs, there are no "choices" or "decisions" to be made by students
Argh, lets just throw reasoning and critical thinking out the window. What kind of members of society are these people trying to churn out??? Fucken drones. WANKERS!!!

Fucking conservative Americans.
Many "drug ed" courses in the public schools today are not drug prevention courses. They are nondirective and psychological. Instead of teaching that drug use is wrong, these courses may encourage children to experiment with illegal drugs by telling them they can make their own decisions.
So, of course, there is no other side to this. DRUGS ARE BAD AND YOU CANNOT DECIDE THIS FOR YOURSELF.
And further on you can tell where this is coming from:
What's wrong with current 'Drug Ed'?
...
...
*Practices and teachings associated with New Age or Eastern mystical religions include -
Progressive relaxation and meditation
Guided imagery and visualization
Centering and anchoring
Consulting with a "wise man" or a "wise rabbit"
Affirmations or mantras
What can you do to replace nondirective drug courses with courses teaching that drugs are wrong ?
Of course, only belief in GOD and JESUS can stop you from the horrible scourge of drugs.
Fucken.

Articles like this annoy me for a number of reasons. To my mind this is what is wrong with drug policy - people with an enormous fear of the unknown, and little backup information, are given sweeping powers to put things 'right' as they see fit.
Primarily, articles of this kind read like a sermon, and the constant emboldening of whatever buzzword or jargon the person writing the piece wants to focus on is patronising and implies that the article is written for morons. The person wants to make the point that drug education programs are supposed to point out to impressionable children that drugs are wrong... but they seek to undermine all good quality harm minimisation in school education by way of this article and replace HM with 'just say drugs are evil' rhetoric. I don't believe for a moment that kids should be encouraged to take drugs at a young age, but I do wish that they could be instructed in SENSIBLE practices. They're taught that if we choose to drink alcohol we should do so in moderation -- what's the difference besides a point of law?
The whole article sounds like the person really wants to teach children "LOOK: If you take drugs, you WON'T get into Heaven... you don't want THAT do you???" which is, pretty much, an absolute waste of time IMHO.
I don't know... maybe there's a secret message that makes more sense, or has a more considered viewpoint, if you ONLY read all the bold words in the article... but I doubt that shit.
BigTrancer :)

^ nice one BT. :)
The article is bascially the sort of condesending advice my parents would throw down my throat. Take it from someone who used to receive this shit for over 20 years, it does not work. Because when the child/youth rebels, they can't address their problems with those who they are supposed to look up to. Either you want to create an environment where those that you raise will be respected and loved for who they are, or you run the risk of never having an open-relationship with them in the future.
Slightly OT...
Christianity is fucked (IMNSFHO) because it's written that god always comes first before family. I'll never be able to have an open-relationship with my parents or my sister because they know that I won't head back down that path.

Lets pretend young people have no choices in this world. Young people shouldn't be considered rational agents, able to make rational decisions.
That whats goverments are for! ;)
New Age religious practices in many courses are a violation of students' First Amendment religion rights. Practices and teachings associated with New Age or Eastern mystical religions include -
Progressive relaxation and meditation
Guided imagery and visualization
Centering and anchoring
Consulting with a "wise man" or a "wise rabbit"
Affirmations or mantras
Thats my favourite bit... Evil meditating new age satanists!!!
Won't someone please think of the children???
*Runs away hysterical*

Meanwhile the prozac whacked parents are force feeding their kids ritalin whilst spruiking "drugs are bad ... mmmkay"

^ Fucken oath.
I think, or should I say, I KNOW for certain that the "Just Say No" or "Kids can say NO" anti-drug campaigns don't work. Sorry, but completely spreading dis-information and sometimes downright LIES about a subject often causes people to NOT believe you if they find out your're lying in the first place.HM campaigns are what's needed upfront to make sure that the kids of tomorrow will know that they have the choice to take a drug, and that their choice will be influenced by knowing and minimising the harm to themselves.
I'm a result of the "Just say NO campaigns" I unfortunatly, "Just said yes". :)

Spending class time teaching children to "feel good" about themselves is a fraud, takes time away from academic work, and does not comply with the law.
Since when did "feeling good" need to be placed in inverted commas? And since when is it a crime to teach children to respect themselves and feel happy with who they are. If these people weren't so focused on their own ignorant viewpoints they might stop and read the article objectively and see just what they are saying:
"It doesn't matter how you feel little Jimmy! You could hate yourself and want to die, just as long as you're getting straight A's..."
Many drug courses drive psychological wedges between child and parent. the child to look within himself for and his own decision instead of looking to parent, church, or the law.
God forbid that these children be indepentant and lean to form their own opinions based upon their own knowledge-base...
The teacher is told not to moralize, lecture, direct, preach or intimidate. Teachers are told not impose their opinions on the students. Everything opinion rather than right or wrong, good or bad.
Because what we need are MORE self-important pricks in our school telling us how we should think, feel, breathe and wipe our own arses. We need more of those moralising, lecturing, preaching and intimidating teachers in our schools, then we can go back to the 1950s and drink pop at the local soda bar...
Goddamnit... do people really think like this even in this day and age where there is SO much info available??? It makes me sick... and that speil about the eastern religions is completely fucked...!

Off Topic -
Has anyone looked through the rest of that site?
its no wonder america is the fucked-up country it currently is...
All of the super-powers throughout history have fallen sooner or later...

haha, america.
Reminds me of the Bill Hicks bit where he takes a stab at fundamentalist christians for believing that the world it 1200 years old. Why can't these people make up their own minds about anything? It's a funny sort of irony, the people who bring us anti-drug campaigns like this are really unintelligent, uninformed, and imo, sadenning individuals. It's propaganda like this that makes me realise just how much smarter and stronger individuals we are purely for the fact that we don't allow ourselves to be led around by mindless and damaging dogma.
And don't even get me started on religion... ;)
