need help on chems

not sure if this belongs here but, does anyone know if Sodium Hydroxide, chloroform and pyridine are legally purchaseable in aus?

Eckythump it has become clear to me what you are trying to do here. I'm sure dawned on some others too. I'd be extremely careful.
I expect this is just something your curious about and you are not actually going to buy these chemicals but some things you could imagine using these chemicals for can be quite dangerous.

If memory of high school chem classes serve me correctly, you can use sodium hydroxide (the NaOH one - yes???) to manufacture soap. So who knows, the local craft store might stock it in low concentrate. Or you could just raid the local high school science storeroom. (please don't government schools are under-funded enough without funding your chemical needs too)

Eckythump I would suggest you also state your reasons for wanting such chemicals. If this is for producing illicit substances, then this is the WRONG place to ask.
If however you intend to do nothing illegal, or wish to utilize these in some strange form of accepted harm minimization [?], then that’s different.
All these chems have legit uses, so do your homework. I doubt you'll get chloroform very easily, as among other things it has been associated with rape (it being an anesthetic). Some years ago round these parts, there were news reports of young guys waking up with pants round ankles and a last memory of something awful smelling being shoved in their face.
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) as explained is available from hardware stores as drain cleaner. Pyridine is a common lab solvent prepared from coal tar distillation. It is a weak base, as apposed to NaOH, a strong base. Not the usual layman item though. It could definitely raise an eyebrow if you didn’t have a good reason for ordering it.
There are other sites where posting such questions is more appropriate. My advice as always is to learn the science. You won’t have to ask then because you’ll already know
A word of warning. Although these chems may seem innocuous, if you order/ attempt to buy anything from chemical wholesalers, they will report you without hesitation if they doubt your intent. A guy from a large company once said to me
“ we wont even sell chemicals to existing customers if these are out of the ordinary for the work they do….people are making drugs out of water these days…”
Postings like this can capture attention more so than a “..duh..I just bought 50 pills..duh..” post. That’s how serious a crime manufacturing is regarded as. It’s your liberty, value it and be aware!
If this sounds too heavy I apologise, but in light of recent media attention I feel it is important this site is represented correctly. And it is hard to see how these chems fit the picture of harm reduction.

For the purpose of harm minimisation - that is physical harm and harm to your freedom ... check dis
1.) Buy Sodium Hydroxide from a chemical supplier. Obviously there are a million legit uses for this stuff and it is the one thing you wont get suspicous clerks asking about... the drain cleaner NaOH has way to many impurities in it for anything anyone might want to consume. Use only AR grade reagents in any synthesis - regardless of weather you, or someone else, plans on eating the product or not
2.) Pyridine is by far one of the stinkiest substances around. if you are planning on using this as a solvent or in any refluxs then make sure you have an adequet fume hood. If you live in a residential area and your house smells like rotten fish then your going to attract attention.
3.) Legally purchasable is a hazy term. Obviously for someone doing a PHD in synthetic chemistry they can be .. but MDMA is a legally purchased AR w/ the correct forms. Im sure you could get chloroform as i've heard stories about people picking up large quantities of ether. Pay by cash and make sure your not being followed.
4.) Dont make drugs. If you want to make money then your an idiot for thinking it's so easy. If you want to possess pure drugs then use your money and 'laboratory experience' to purify street bought drugs.
Its not diuficult to seperate MDMA from other substances in a pill - its been dont many times.

Chloroform can be quite easily made using OTC, easy to obtain household chemicals, specifically bleach and acetone (paint thinner). Of course, I do not recommend you try this as home, as chloroform is obviously a dangerous chemical and must be treated with the utmost caution...
