Police officers nabbed in drug and alcohol tests
Article from: Herald Sun

DRUG and alcohol testing of police has yielded its first two positive results.

Two senior-constables are off the beat, one after failing a drug test and the other for having alcohol in his system.

The officer who failed the drug test has been suspended on full pay and is awaiting a decision on his future.

A range of sanctions can apply to him, including dismissal.

Police said it could not reveal the substance for which that member had tested positive.

Illicit drugs including cannabis, cocaine and amphetamines can be detected.

Officers who test positive for drugs for which they do not have a prescription can also find themselves the subject of disciplinary action.

The officer who failed his alcohol test resigned almost immediately.

He was one of four officers asked to provide a sample because of concerns their unsatisfactory work performance was linked to alcohol abuse.

Acting Supt Spiros Kalliakmanis, who is managing the program, said 181 officers had been tested since legislation was passed in August last year.

All had been co-operative, Acting Supt Kalliakmanis said.

He said 158 of those were either the subject of target testing or were members of units involved in weapon use or special tactics.

The positive result came from this category.

Nineteen tests were made of police involved in "critical incidents" such as police shootings or pursuits where there had been a serious injury.

Testing is unannounced and done by outside specialists.

Acting Supt Kalliakmanis said counselling services had been used by many police. He said the force was happy to hear from officers so they could be helped before their problem affected their work or they turned in positive test results.

Almost all had sought help for alcohol issues but Acting Supt Kalliakmanis said he believed fewer police were now abusing alcohol.

"The culture has changed considerably. Historically, there's no issue with people knowing it was sometimes an alcohol-fuelled profession," he said.

I think they should test the whole force not just certain ones, it's a bit unfair don't you think.. What happens if the commissioner is a total coke freak and I bet they wouldn't test them would they now:\

Also being given pay and suspended until further notice is like being given a holiday, they should not be paid, I'm sure that would make them think twice before consuming a substance.

I hope they end up testing each and every single one of the employers on the police force, it would make things a lot more fair and I'm sure there would probably be a stop to it pretty fast...

The cops will never test everyone in the police force because they know that if they did that they couldn't deal with the amount of cops that would get busted. They only bust a few to scare the rest into sobriety.

I used to be in the Defence Force and pretty much all my mates there were into drugs. If they tested everyone they would have thousands of people to deal with. I think I remember a Warrent Officer saying that they only randomly test 5% of sailors at most. And that is their policy. They know that there are shitloads of sailors getting high. If you got rid of them all we wouldn't have a defence force.

Is it me or does this sound a bit hypocritical, I can tell you now that I don't want my employer to bring in drug testing and test all employees, I like my job thanks.

The same goes for the police, fair enough if they are in charge of weapons, they should be careful of their drug use and alcohol abuse, but guys we all know that drugs can be detected in the body long after the efffects have worn off and that drug testing is not fair unless you put limits in like they do with alcohol testing.

The problem with this drug testing policy with police is that they can now say "look we are testing our officers, so it's all good to test all of you too"

They are just reinforcing their drug policy at the cost of a few coppers, they won't test high flyers, too worried about losing them, just a few minions to prove they are "clean"!!

LOL makes sense! when i was contracted to an nz govt agency for IT work, almost everyone on the floor was on ice/meth! it was crazy throughout the day people were logging on and off from there pc to use the tiolets ;)
They actually had stats of all staff and it was easy to pick out as some were logging off pc 20 - 30 times a day for 5 - 10min breaks. They have strict drug policies via drug tests, but none were given out, mind you at a cost of $1000+ per test hmm...

Why the hell do they get suspended on full pay when they're just going to return to work after court, blaming the stressful events in the life of a police officer for there reasons getting fucked up and then driving? It's bullshit. I'm doing Criminology at University and fuck me, it is horrific just the presence of future piglets being around me creeps me the fuck out. Fuck the Police, go catch murderers and rapists, don't spend all your patrol shift harrassing minority groups and arresting people on drugs having a good time!

TEST THEM ALL AND SHOW THE PUBLIC HOW RIFE IT REALLY IS...

Might help to push our thoughts on drugs if the general public found out the drug abuse within the force

I say jack them all up on meth.

They might actually get some thing useful done.

Baysieguy, I don't think mushies comments are hypocritical at all, police officers want to arrest drug offenders if they use drugs themselves, they are the hypocrites!
Jakeperson, I think jacking every police officer on meth would result in a few more fatal shootings and a fair bit more bashings, not that I believe meth is a massive cause of violence like the media would have you believe but it brngs out these tendencies in people who have them. (Which alot of cops do, they are all on a fucking power trip.)
Also, as much as I hold contempt towards the police force and drug laws, I would say arresting rapists, child molesters and murderers is "something useful", much as I despise them at times, I shudder to think of a society without them.

It's alright drug_mentor, I wasn't seriously suggesting that.

I thought it might provide a few laughs, unfortunately my humour seems to be lost on most BL'ers.

Is it me or does this sound a bit hypocritical, !

Well...no one wants job drug testing that's true.

But if the cops are going to randomly test us on the side of the road for drugs...they should be under the same scrutiny.

Politicians should be tested as well.

There are more than a few cops and pollies who use meth to stay up for the long shifts etc

...ever hear a transport officer say he's going for a "cup of tea?"
