What happens when a superhero isn't so super?

John Hancock (Will Smith) is an unhappy and reluctant superhero who is living in his own world. For some unknown reason, Hancock is depressed and has started drinking very heavily. He has saved many lives in Los Angeles over the years, but in doing so, he has no regards for damaging buildings, trains, roads, cars, or anything that gets in his way of getting the job done. The last time he captured several criminals, it cost the city $9 million to fix the damages. The public has had enough of Hancock, and they want him to stop or go to another city. Then one day, Hancock saves the life of Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) from being run over by a train. Ray is a public relations executive who now can go home to his wife and child, because Hancock was there. Ray owes Hancock his life, and he makes it his mission to change his superhero's image and have the public cheering him.

I thought this was great fun. Bit of a no-brainer, schmaltzy in places and it also has Will Smith in it (something that immediately torpedoes most films), but I really enjoyed it! :D

It doesn't need a sequel making (it feels like it was built for a single outing), the dialogue was funny in places (a down-and-out, drunk-ass superhero is something to behold) and the CGI was passable. A nice tonic to the formulaic superhero films of late.

Anyone else seen it?

I liked it...the storyline wasn't that great, but overall it was a good movie. And of course Will Smith did a great acting job as usual...He's getting closer to becoming a top actor, if he's not their already.

I really enjoyed the movie. It wasn't what I was expecting, which is a great thing. I find it hard to talk about it without giving anything away, so I'll leave it.

Tell you what though, for the life of me I cannot understand the negativity that surrounds Will Smith all the time. If anything, he is probably one of the most diverse actors who delivers consistently with each movie he does. The obvious choice is Wild Wild West to attack him about, but what other film has he been in that is shite? Some films may not be up to much, but I think he is brilliant in all of them, including WWW.

Bad boys 2 was fairly poor as well, but I agree that most of what he's been in has been pretty good, if commercial.

I enjoyed the pursuit of happyness, men in black, enemy of the state.

I think he's matured somewhat as an actor. Weird, as his music started off quite good and got progressively worse. =D

I enjoyed it. A few one liners here and there. Plot twist, sorta. My only gripe would be that it was just a tad short. I felt that they could've spent less time

Just finished it then - was suprised at the way they did it. 3.5/5 (not 4 because I don't think it has much re-watch value).
