NEWS: smh.com.au- April 14, 2008 - 3:10PM"Plan for painkillers to be on script only"

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/nurofen-scriptonly-plan/2008/04/14/1208025064825.html

Popular painkillers containing codeine could be reclassified prescription-only to stop abuse of the powerful over-the-counter drugs.

A government committee has flagged the possibility of classifying the codeine combination medicines such as Nurofen Plus, a schedule 8, a restricted category for drugs at high risk of being abused.

These drugs, which include morphine, methadone, stimulant medication and some sedatives, are only available on prescription and with tight records on who is accessing them.

But drug experts and doctors say the move would be impractical and inconvenient given codeine abuse is "relatively limited" in Australia.

Painkillers containing ibuprofen and codeine can now be purchased over-the-counter in pharmacies in packs of up to 72 tablets.

The National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee has decided to examine the scheduling of these drugs, including whether a schedule 8 listing is warranted, after fear of growing codeine abuse.

Reports earlier this year claimed that 7000 Australians had joined an online forum since 2003 for people addicted to Nurofen Plus, the strongest codeine tablet available in this country without a prescription.

The forum's founder claimed 5 per cent of the population could be addicted to the pills.

A report from a Melbourne hospital published in the Medical Journal in January said recreational misuse of Nurofen Plus had become a "significant problem".

The committee, in its newly published record of reasons, said it had been told pharmacists were reporting more requests for codeine-combined painkillers not subject to advertising restrictions.

The submission claimed there was a public perception that products that were heavily promoted were not harmful, "thus resulting in increasing pressure on pharmacists to supply".

John Gullotta from the Australian Medical Association said making the drugs prescription only would be an extreme move.

"Schedule 8 is usually reserved for medications that have been abused while they're on prescription, and these medications aren't even on prescription right now," Dr Gullotta said.

Pharmacologist Ric Day, of the University of NSW, agreed, saying while codeine abuse was a concern, it affected relatively few people compared to the vast numbers who would be inconvenienced by a schedule change.

Specialists suggested limiting codeine content, pack sizes and product advertising as more appropriate alternatives to rescheduling.

The committee will consider the issue at its June meeting.

Comment was being sought from Nurofen Plus manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser.

Wow. Guess the whispers were right. Bastards, taking away the one drug I have easy access to. They want me to switch to illegal alternatives? Bastards.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo !

These drugs, which include morphine, methadone, stimulant medication and some sedatives, are only available on prescription and with tight records on who is accessing them.

Codiene is a pro drug that gets converted to morphine. Methadone, stimulant medication ? OTC ? WTF?

Agreed. Fianaly some sense.

Painkillers containing ibuprofen and codeine can now be purchased over-the-counter in pharmacies in packs of up to 72 tablets.

Oh yeah if your over 50 and are getting served by a trainee. I cant even buy 2 packs at the same time, but im cool with that.

Most of these people would be white collar non drug users. Of course they are Addicted !! Besides going to the bottle shop it is the only other OTC substance our wonderfull goverment will allow them to consume. If any of these "addicts" had the social deviation to occasionally smoke weed they most certainly cut their raging N+ habit

A "significant problem" is when these people have no idea Ibuprofen and APAP are bad for your liver.

Its not harmfull if used correctly !

Agreed. Inconvenienced ? If i cant get N+ im going to start copping Dope. Nice bit of harm reduction fucktards.

If you limit codeine contents the idiots are just going to consume more Ibuprofen and fuck their liver more.

If you limit pack sizes im still going to go from pharmacy to pharmacy.

So can we please stop all unnecessary CWE threads please !

Then lets get a team to infiltrate the N+ addiction boards and de-rail their scheduling efforts.

VIVA N+ !

:( Hmmmm...obvious something like this would happen eventually. Oh well...looks like i'll be stocking up before the June deadline.

these kill joys are watching these forums and everytime something becomes popular they will do their best to destroy it. Stopping unnecessary threads is probably a good place to start. Shit they stopped psuedo , now looking at codeine, DXM etc what next

There's a lot more than just 'these forums' behind such moves. Legislative advisors certainly don't need BL to be up to date with such trends, particularly with something like codeine abuse. I should remind you that this is a harm reduction site. To close threads for fear legislation will introduced defeats the purpose entirely.

If these legislative moves concern you, become proactive and voice your concerns to those who can affect these changes. You'll probably have the drug companies on your side.

So true.

Also the pharmacies. I have noticed a XXX price difference between warehouse pharmacies and your local independent. When you think of how much of it is getting sold a scheduling change could really affect some businesses bottom line.

In this case we have some powerfull allies who are going to fight against prescription only / scheduling changes.

Hurray for capitalism

One thing that hasn't been discussed yet though, is if you actually have a legitimate need for codeine pain relief in the future. How stupid, time consuming and expensive will it be to get some pain relief?

So I have a toothache? I need to book a doctors appointment.
I have some back pain from work? Need to book a doctors appointment.
Just got the usual cold? Need to book a doctors appointment.
The list goes on.....

Aren't our GP's already swamped. This just seems rediculous and I think sanity will prevail in this case, otherwise god help us all.

They should just put CWE instructions on the pack, that would save more lives than taking it off OTC and forcing addicts to cop in the cross.

The government is so against people haveing a good time, they are willing to take away effective medications from the bulk of the nation as they have done with Psudo and soon Codeine.

Might have to lie on the next PDI "no I don't use codeine"

If they were actually worried about harm reduction/minimization they could just bring out 10mg codeine only tablets (no para/ibuprofen). That way people abusing them won't be killing their livers/life's.

Yes im sick, but really if your the kind of person who is swallowing 48 whole N+ everyday, its a good thing you'll run into some serious health problems because i for one dont want your inferior genetics contaminating this world.

Darwinism and Natural Selection; Stern but fair.

Lol Whaa...

Im actually over the whole codeine thing mate, let alone taking it everyday. I fail to see how what you said relates to me anyway.

Now, a script for Nurofen Plus

ONE of Australia's biggest-selling headache pills could soon be as difficult to buy as morphine or methadone after an expert committee was flooded with complaints the pills were being abused by addicts and drug dealers.

Nurofen Plus, bought over the counter for toothache and period pain, could be made a Schedule 8 drug, a category that includes some of the most addictive medications on the market, the National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee foreshadowed yesterday.

The news comes days after the committee decided that 15 cough medicines would be rescheduled as prescription medications because of concerns about their side effects and the way parents used them. The committee is taking submissions from drug and alcohol experts before making a decision in June, but says it has been told pharmacists are receiving more requests for codeine-combined painkillers and that there is a public perception that products that are heavily promoted are not harmful, "thus resulting in increasing pressure on pharmacists to supply".

Nurofen Plus, which contains 200 milligrams of ibuprofen and 12.8 milligrams of codeine, is thought to be used by about half of all adult Australians.

It is the strongest over-the-counter painkiller on the market and has been blamed for a spate of hospital admissions where codeine addicts have taken up to 24 tablets a day, not realising the medication's other active ingredient, ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, can cause ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

The committee is also investigating reports that codeine in the tablets is being extracted by manufacturers of illicit drugs.

If Nurofen Plus is made a Schedule 8 drug, patients will need a complex prescription that must be copied, registered and locked in a safe by the pharmacist.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has previously condemned the move, saying it would cost the nation millions of dollars and inconvenience thousands of legitimate patients, while John Gullotta, the chairman of the Australian Medical Association's federal therapeutic committee, said making the drug prescription-only would be an extreme move.

"Schedule 8 is usually reserved for medications that have been abused while they're on prescription, and these medications aren't even on prescription right now," Dr Gullotta said.

"It's a huge leap and would create enormous red tape for doctors and pharmacists. I haven't seen any evidence of abuse in my general practice, so I'm very surprised they would be considering this. It seems unprecedented."

A recent study found that after three months of regular use, up to 20 per cent of people developed ulcers in the stomach and 10 per cent developed ulcers in the duodenum. Bleeding, perforation or obstruction of the intestines occurred in about 4 per cent of patients who took the medication for a year.

An article in The Medical Journal Of Australia earlier this year reported misuse of Nurofen Plus was a "significant" problem and outlined two cases of patients with perforated ulcers from consuming up to a packet a day. A British woman, Linda Docherty, 49, died in March last year after taking up to 64 tablets a day for two years.

fuckin what? when i had a tongue operation, the doctors, even tho they said "the tongue is probably the most painful muscle to be operated on, they only gave me 12.5mg codiene + 200mg panadol, that did nothing. if i couldnt of walked into a chemist upon leaving the hospital and getting a pack of the strong codiene, i would of been fucked. Sure, i could of gone to the doctor, assuming i could stand the hour wait, then the consultation, then getting to the chemist... but why put people through that?

plus i guarantee that if this gets into the paper, more kids will clue in and start abusing it. oh wait , it already is.

Yeah reclassify them, theyre all shit drugs anyway :D
