Addicts to lecture cops on psychosis
Simon Kearney
January 09, 2007

ICE addicts would lecture police on how to deal with their violent mood swings under a proposal to be put to state, federal and territory police commissioners.
A course being developed by NSW Assistant Commissioner Dave Owens would also involve police being lectured by the mentally ill to avoid the triggers that provoke violence.

Working in conjunction with Victorian colleagues, Mr Owens is preparing to brief the commissioners in March on a proposal inspired by a course used by police in Chicago, suffering a crime wave fuelled by ice, the street name for crystal methamphetamine.

Mr Owens told The Australian yesterday he was planning a trial of a 40-hour course for up to 20per cent of all police across the nation. "We think it will do very well, we're meeting with our Victorian counterparts and hope to combine our research and come up with a NSW and Victorian course," he said.

"You've got to look at training between 10 and 20 per cent of officers."

Fresh from a working visit to the US, he said the course would teach police to avoid the violent triggers that push the mentally vulnerable over the edge.

"We have to accept that people are going to be very different. They're not prisoners but we get left dealing with them as prisoners," he said. "It's arming the cops with a little bit more knowledge and skills. When they go to jobs they realise they need a little bit longer."

The issue of time is a central factor as police across the country face budgetary constraints.

Police Association of NSW president Bob Pritchard said in the latest edition of the union's magazine that ice had created "a perfect storm" for his officers.

He called on NSW police officers to log ice incidents with the association so it could chart the epidemic. He also called on the NSW Government to investigate creating specialist police teams to deal with the crisis created by the drug.

A report in the same issue by association researcher Sandra Soldo said an increase in violent crime was being driven by ice use and that police resources were being diverted to deal with the associated psychosis.

"This diversion in resources is preventing our members from performing their core police functions," she said.

The police union is asking for an extra 3000 police from the state Government, facing an election in March.

Assistant Health Minister Cherie Burton told ABC radio the drug was placing stress on health services as well.

"(There is) stress on our emergency departments from young people showing up there in a drug-induced psychosis, particularly as a result of using ice," she said.

Mr Owens said his training proposal would involve hospital and mental health workers, the mentally ill and police spending a week learning from each other.

The federal Opposition yesterday criticised the federal Government for its approach on getting the states to outlaw ice smoking implements.

Opposition justice spokesman Joe Ludwig said the federal Government should act to stop the import of drug paraphernalia such as ice pipes.

lmao.

Knock the fuckn idiots out.

How is that, scumbag ice heads telling cops how to treat them. They put themselves in that state, they deserve what they cop. Half of them enjoy being psychotic, or the diagnosed schizo's i've seen enjoy it. I was with one bird who used to put her self into psychosis like she enjoyed it - knowing full well after she used she'd be a demon for like 8hrs...

fuck them, fuck them off imo. Something needs to be done about the addiction, not the other way around. This whole ice head loop is running full cricle

That'll do it, pipes being impossible to make locally of course 8)

From questions and points he raised at the Brisbane hearing of the AOSD, I found Joe Ludwig to be quite sensible when it comes to the drugs issues. However, the above statement is way off mark IMHO.

Give me an example where removing paraphernalia has ever resulted in significant reduction in use and/or hasn't increased the degree of risk taking behavior.

There's probably more than one local glassblower who would willingly fill a market void if imported pipes were banned. You never know, it could even be impetus for designing a unique "Aussie" pipe. Perhaps the curves of the kangaroo or the bubble of a Koala belly could be incorporated, producing not only an aesthetically pleasing, unrecognisable pipe, but maybe also one that produces a better flow of smoke at an optimum temperature.

Reduce the demand and risk taking behavior will also be reduced. If pipes weren't available at all, then this most [?] addictive of drugs would simply stimulate the necessary inventiveness. Light bulbs, tin foil etc would become increasingly used as alternatives.

On the subject of having users educate police: Great idea! I'd think most paramedic and emergency workers would applaud this move.

on boxing day i was at 'off ya tree' and the girl working there told me that from january 1st the sale of glass pipes in QLD was illegal and that any shops found to be selling them would have to deal with a pretty hefty fine.

I gotta say.. GOD FUKIN DAMMIT @#$%^#@ hahah what a fuking pain in the ass. I hate to admit it but the majority of people I have smoked with over the years that have not gone onto become a regular user have all said that one of funnest aspects of doing ice was actually watching the vapour swirl around in the pipe.. "its almost hipnotic".

Taking away pipes might not stop a seasoned user from using anymore but I think that less people will use it often enough to develop a habit because of the hassles associated with using foil or bulbs.

Personally I can use foil.. ive got a good technique lol but if I have to use it every time i smoke I will definately not smoke it as often.

To help out the argument that they should not take away pipes.. I could be wrong but wasnt there something in the news ages ago about some serious side affects for people who were smoking harry on foil (chasing the dragon)? alziemers? something like that.. if anyone has some info on this it would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that when that foil gets too hot and a cloud of vapour that is not ice goes into your lungs that were consuming some harmfull shit!

I know I certainly do! We've been dealing with so much prejudice from every-fucking-one, I'm really glad to see someone taking a step in this direction and at least try to understand a meth induced psychosis.

Banning ice pipes will simply make me cuss a whole lot more. And gee, I'd be doing more harm to myself, smoking it off a foil..

It would probably make some smokers turn to IV use too, since they are not going to start snorting or eating it.. and that would increase risk of HIV and HEP, and shooting cut products which could lead to blood circlulation problems and endocartitis.

Yeah true but you can still buy Rose holders to hold your little fake roses in.

I've smoked using a champagne glass laid on it's side and a straw. Not as good as my pipe but better than foil.

Where there's a will there's a way.

I have known (or known of) a number of people who have switched to IV use of street methamphetamine following the unavailability of glass pipes in stores. There seems to me to still be some taboo about IV use of drugs in many circles oif drug users, so I must question whether these people would have began IV use even if there hadn't been any change in availability of smoking implements.

I think I can make the assumption that there is atleast some enjoyment in the action of taking the drug. As far as I know, oral consumption is a little boring for some users and snorting can be unpleasant for obvious reasons. Maybe IV use would be a preference over the last two methods of use if only for the instantaneous rush it provides, with little discomfort.

I have heard that it is safest to use methamphetamine intravenously. Ofcourse snorting is very harmful to the nasal cavities and smoking a drug has all the usual dangers to lungs and throat. Would it be correct to assume that these methods of use are more dangerous than IV? I'd be interested to see some studies concerned with this..

Back to the subject, I think the police force is atleast sniffing on the right track with the idea to actually seek knowledge as to how to deal with people from the people they wish to deal with. And they are acknowledging that they can't continue dealing with people as if they are prisoners.

The outcome of this program could go either way, I think it could be a useful tool provided that both parties are able to see the situation from each other's point of view.

If the person could somehow get hold of some 100% pure untainted methamphetamine made by a professional with no by prpducts or additives, or even dirt or dust in it.. then yes, shooting it up (as long as you were experienced and knew how to do it 100% safely in a good environment) is a lot safer than smoking it or snorting it. Eating impure products could be dangerous to the stomach, but shooting impure could be bad for your veins, heart, eyes and organs etc.

I had a dream: I used to boot up ice so i know a fair bit about it. I also have known a few cooks. You can purify shit you buy if you know anything about it. But its unlikely anyone would bother. Most of the speed people get is cut up usually with shit that wont do you any harm, some things that will. For example you could get some stuff that isn't water soluble in there, and you could clog up ya veins but things that aren't soluble aren't common, but people often get it off meth heads who will take their half and chuck in the other half whatever they can get their hands on that looks similar. A lot of these people will claim they are dealers too. Sugar and salt are even used sometimes by dodgy people which destroy your veins and could lead to a vein collapse. Apparently ice in its pure form is bad for your veins alone and you are supposed to mix it with glucose to neutralize it, which probably has something to do with the pH of it.

People get addicted to ice a lot easier through using needles. They get addicted and dependant to the rush. It's to do with the instant release of dopamine. Plus it is most effective to boot it and people get more and more addicted to the drug and want to dose up more because of the rush (which pretty much doubles your tolerance every time). It's so easy, you just push the button, no sitting there for ages going through heaps of lighters and getting pestered to pass it on and screwing up your lungs.

But health wise yeah it can be better for you with self control, pure gear, sterile gear, water and equipment. Everyone who i know who has started booting it has gotten heavy into it though, and its unlikely many people keep their self control when using it this way.

I reckon realistically eating it would be the over all safest way..
